Four games into the current season and with Texas Tech still looking for a Big 12 win, coach Matt Wells announced a quarterback change Wednesday. Alan Bowman, who had shown tantalizing potential the past two seasons when not sidelined by long-term injuries, is out. Utah State transfer Henry Colombi is the new starter, Wells said, for Tech's next game, Oct. 24 against West Virginia. Wells said Colombi "kind of jumpstarted the offense" in relief appearances against Kansas State and Iowa State. Colombi has completed 74.1% of his passes for 359 yards, with three touchdown passes and one interception. He was also familiar with the system offensive coordinator David Yost from Utah State.

While Bowman suffered an ankle injury against K-State, that was not the reason for the change."Alan has played OK," Wells said. "He has not played bad. I want to say that. He is not the reason we're 1-3, absolutely. It's never that way. Playing the quarterback position, I understand it that quarterbacks usually get too much credit and they get too much blame. "Certainly I want to make sure we're definitely not blaming, and it's absolutely not that. But when you're 1-3 and you have played just OK, and as we work through it with Alan, he understands that." A redshirt sophomore from Grapevine, Bowman had a 64.7% completion rate with 881 yards. He's thrown seven touchdowns but also had four interceptions. - Dallas Morning News
