Long is third in the nation in receptions and tops among tight ends, well ahead of Duke's Noah Gray (19) and Sean Dykes (16) of Memphis. Long has established himself as the favorite to win the John Mackey Award given annually to the nation's best tight end. "I give him a lot of credit and then coach (Steve) Shimko has done a really nice job with him," said BC coach Jeff Hafley during a Tuesday Zoom meeting. "They have really done a nice job of putting him in position to make plays and he's made a lot of them. He gave us fits in training camp and usually what happens in training camp shows up in the game. The guy works hard and he studies and he's such a tough kid."

Long led BC in receiving yards (509) and yards per reception (18.2) last season, but his skills in the passing game were underutilized in the Eagles' power run offense designed for tailback AJ Dillon. For that double tight end offense to work, Long needed to be a strong blocker. Long has enhanced his receiving skills while maintaining his abilities as blocker, a combination that will result in an NFL job down the line. "Don't take away from him how well he's blocked and that's where he is going to separate himself," said Hafley. "I keep telling him that and it's really impressive to see him doing it in the run game and in the pass game." - Boston Herald
