When he was a high-school senior two years ago in East Texas and sorting through scholarship offers from more than 20 FBS programs, Tyree Wilson never pictured himself playing for Texas Tech. But Tech coach Matt Wells and defensive line coach Paul Randolph changed Wilson's mind about that this off-season when the big defensive end became disgruntled at Texas A&M and considered alternatives. The Red Raiders are glad he did. The 6-foot-6, 280-pound sophomore showed Saturday in only glimpses how big an impact he can make on their defensive front. In Tech's 63-56 overtime loss to No. 8 Texas, Wilson registered a sack, helped cause one and was credited with a quarterback pressure on another play. His combination of power and agility gave Texas offensive tackles problems.

"We knew what we were getting once we got him to commit to coming here," defensive coordinator Keith Patterson said. "It's going to be exciting to watch his development, but he is definitely going to be a guy that we can impact the quarterback with and do some things as we move forward." Wilson graduated two years ago from New London West Rusk, located roughly between and about a half-hour each from Longview and Tyler. College Station is only about three hours from Wilson's hometown, and he spent two years at Texas A&M, redshirting in 2018 and playing in 12 games last year. He said he left the program because of "issues with the training staff," but declined to elaborate. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
