Last season, Byron Cardwell entered fall camp third or fourth on the Ducks' depth chart. A year later, he will likely be Oregon's starting running back after showing a lot of potential in limited snaps in 2021. Once CJ Verdell was lost for the 2021 season due to a lower leg injury, Cardwell began to receive more playing time. On 61 carries, he rushed for 417 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 6.8 yards per attempt.

Against Colorado last year, Cardwell recorded his first 100-yard game after going for 127 yards and a score on only seven carries. He was also named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week in November after rushing nine times for 98 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Washington State. Two weeks ago, Cardwell was named to the 2022 preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top college running back. He was one of 10 Pac-12 running backs on the preseason watch list. Oregon will likely use multiple running backs, such as Noah Whittington and Mar'Keise Irving, but Cardwell has the potential to be one of the nation's top running backs. - Register Guard

Oregon running back evolution: The Ducks lost CJ Verdell to the NFL, Travis Dye to USC and Trey Benson to Florida State. Byron Cardwell Jr. and Sean Dollars return, Noah Whittington arrived in the spring and Mar'Keise Irving and Jordan James will join them later this summer. UO has more to replace than Verdell and Dye's yards and touchdowns, but accounting for the lost production is part of any offseason and goes with the territory at running back. A new rushing leader will emerge - in both yards and vocal presence - and there will be a different dynamic to the room in 2022. An unspecified injury to Cardwell kept him out of the spring game, but Dollars and Whittington each did well enough to show there is both talent and depth in a reloading room. They each offer a different look for the offense.

Said running backs coach Carlos Locklyn: "They all bring different skill sets. Byron's a great guy in space catching the ball. Sean Dollars I'm proud of him; he has gotten better taking to my coaching because I'm more of a military style type of coach. I don't use profanity with my kids but I get in them. I'm proud of him on taking on the discipline aspect of things and realize that I run my room. But I'm so proud of him and his development, how he has gotten better. He can do it all: he can run between the tackles, he can catch the ball, get him in space and each day he's getting better. Noah Whittington is Noah Whittington. Hard running kid, he can catch the ball, plays good without the ball. But all three together, we'll have something special with those three." Cardwell is the most powerful and has great top-end speed, Dollars is an agile all-around back and Whittington is a nimble speedy back with a knack for bouncing off tackles. Offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham said Cardwell did "phenomenal" during the spring. - Oregon Live
