Tulane wide receiver Jha'Quan Jackson refuses to talk about his disappointing 2021 that began with a knee injury in preseason camp and ended in a humbling, 2-10 record. He is not being belligerent. He simply wants to focus on the present and the future r ather than re-live the past. "I'm excited to get back with the team," he said after Friday morning's practice, the Green Wave's first in shoulder pads. "I worked hard all summer. The standard is coming out here and competing for a conference championship . We've been going up the hill, and we are climbing each and every day trying to get one percent better." Jackson, for one, looks a hundred percent better than he did after he got hurt last August.Coming off a year in which he tied for the team le ad in receptions (31), was second in receiving yards (425) and first in touchdown catches (eight), he suffered a severe (redshirt) sophomore slump to 19 catches, 274 yards and, most painfully, one score. This, from a guy who told fans at a meet-the-team night they could call him ATM for "automatic touchdown maker." The letdown was team wide. "He had a tough season," coach Willie Fritz said. "It was humbling for everyone. I was humbled. He had injuries and fought through it all, and that happens sometime s in this game, but he's healthy and ready to go this year." - New Orleans Times Picayune

When he introduced himself to fans at Tulane's "Let's Talk Football" event in late July, wide receiver Jha'Quan Jackson said his nickname was ATM, explaining it meant Automatic Touchdown Maker. The playful bravado was out of character for Jackson, who no rmally is soft-spoken in public, but on point considering his breakout potential. After scoring five times in the last four games of 2020, he is capable of reaching the end zone in a variety of ways thanks to his terrific change of direction and open-fie ld skills. He became one of freshman quarterback and roommate Michael Pratt's primary targets a year ago, making 25 of his team-high tying 31 catches (and seven of his nine touchdowns) in the final seven games. Their rapport has remained strong early in preseason practice. On Saturday, Pratt hit him deep in one-on-one drills and connected with him again on a perfect strike to the corner of the end zone during 11-on-11 work.Jackson also scored on a 14-yard run against Army last November, averaged an impressive 13.9 yards on punt returns after supplanting Amare Jones in that role and figures to be the Wave's primary kickoff returner with Jones' transfer to Georgia Southern. His multi-faceted skills earned him a spot on the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, which goes to the most versatile player in college football. "If he keeps pushing himself, he can be a great player in this conference," Tulane offensive coordinator Chip Long said. "His ceiling is unmatched." - New Orleans Times Picayune
