 SirVocea Dennis, Pittsburgh, Player News

2022 PRESEASON ROTARY LOMBARDI AWARD WATCHLIST: SirVocea Dennis, Pittsburgh, Sr LB,...Dennis (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/The Peddie School (N.J.)) returns as the veteran leader of Pitt's linebacker corps, with 145 career tackles and 24 TFLs in his career. Capable of playing every linebacker position for the Panthers and accomplished as both a blitzing run stuffer and very capable cover man, Dennis has been named All-ACC in each of the last two seasons and also provides valuable leadership to Pitt's defensive unit. Last season, Dennis was twice named ACC Linebacker of the Week and made some of the biggest plays of the season for the Panthers, returning an interception 50 yards for a touchdown against Clemson, posting three tackles for loss and a sack against North Carolina and tallying a career-best 12 tackles with two sacks in the ACC Championship Game win over Wake Forest. - Pitt Football

Yes, Pitt's linebackers coach knows what was lost. Phil Campbell, Johnny Petrishen and Chase Pine ran out of eligibility. Cam Bright transferred to Washington. After the Peach Bowl, Pitt saw 601 tackles walk out the door. The reality is linebacker is Pitt's biggest question mark outside of quarterback Kenny Pickett's replacement. So this is an opportunity for SirVocea Dennis. He was Pitt's leading tackler with 87 stops last season, is an all-ACC player. He had 14.5 tackles for loss as an outside linebacker in 2020 before making the move inside last fall. He slid in as a playmaker and a natural leader. There are six candidates for two starting inside spots. Brandon George, Bangally Kamara, Solomon DeShields and Aydin Henningham return, while two transfers - Notre Dame's Shayne Simon and Missouri State's Tylar Wiltz - have been added to the mix. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

John Petrishen, Cam Bright and Phil Campbell III totaled 200 tackles, 21 1/2 TFLs and 12 1/2 sacks last season. All are gone, with Bright transferring to Washington. This will be a position to watch closely in camp, and an area of concern for Narduzzi and his staff. Smartly, Narduzzi sensed a problem and found Shayne Simon (Notre Dame) and Tylar Wiltz (Missouri State) in the NCAA transfer portal. Also, Bangally Kamara and Solomon Deshields, third-year players acquired the old-school way by recruiting them, will be important players in the rotation. Senior SirVocea Dennis, perhaps the best linebacker in the ACC even though he was left off the preseason all-conference team, returns in the middle or outside. He can and will play both. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Pitt's players were holding court in the ACC Kickoff interview room when news dropped that "College GameDay" will come to the North Shore for the Backyard Brawl. When asked about the occasion, SirVocea Dennis smiled. He and teammates Carter Warren and Deslin Alexandre found out hours earlier. "You always hear about 13-9 or this other time that they beat them," Dennis said of the rivalry between Pitt and West Virginia. "You're just thinking, 'When will my time come to write myself in those history books?"

Of course, Dennis is already in Pitt's history books. He was the leading tackler last year when the Panthers captured the ACC championship and won 11 games for the first time in four decades. It was a historic season for Pitt, and Dennis was quite literally at the center of it, manning the middle linebacker spot every FBS game. Dennis tallied 87 tackles and 9 1/2 tackles for loss, third on the team behind only Habakkuk Baldonado and Calijah Kancey. The second-team All-ACC selection was named the conference's linebacker of the week twice. The first recognition followed Pitt's signature win against Clemson in which he had a game-altering pick-six. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

SirVocea Dennis looked across the green turf of Gateway High School's field Tuesday afternoon, pleased to see young boys playing seven-on-seven with unbridled joy at the Nike Football Camp. Yet, Pitt's senior linebacker, a counselor at the camp, understands the game he plays on a much higher level has turned into a "wild" ride for players and coaches. Name, image and likeness opportunities and the NCAA transfer portal have changed the rules, altered rosters (including the one where he resides), affected recruiting and created temptations.

How wild did it get for Dennis this offseason? He said he deflected offers from two schools that tried to entice him to transfer. "I had a couple (contacts)," he said. "I wasn't worried about it. I'm here now, so..." Dennis declined to identify the schools, and for a good reason, he said. "That's an NCAA violation," he said of schools contacting him, even though his name never appeared in the portal. "I respectfully told them that what they were trying to do is illegal and it could, actually, ruin my eligibility. If they wanted to talk to me, I would have to have been in the portal already." - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
