  01/04/23 - QB *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Bryce Young was masterfully able to escape all sorts of pressure from defenses during his two seasons as Alabama's starter. But after declaring Monday for the 2023 NFL draft, Young will be able to run from questions about his size. As a potential No. 1 overall pick in April, Young's height will be thoroughly dissected, debated and analyzed over the next three-plus months in NFL draft rooms and on national television. Listed at 6-feet tall and 194 pounds by Alabama, the junior quarterback was not tipping his hand Monday about what he expects to measure at the NFL combine, which will be held in Indianapolis from Feb. 28 through March 6. "That's a good question," he said with a laugh. "I guess we'll see."

Young did not yet know how much he would participate in the combine drills, which top quarterbacks sometimes skip to let their film speak for itself. There are few comparisons at the NFL level for Young's combination of size and style of play. He is taller than fellow Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray, who is 5-foot-10, but runs much less frequently than Murray did at Oklahoma or has done for the Arizona Cardinals. Young operated mostly as a pocket passer at Alabama with impressive elusive ability, but he almost never took the ball on designed runs and rarely took off scrambling past the line of scrimmage. Even so, Young's poise under pressure, accuracy and performance in key moments of SEC games have earned him plenty of attention as perhaps the best quarterback in the draft. - Birmingham News

  01/02/23 - QB *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young and linebacker Will Anderson Jr. are heading to the NFL, where both could contend for the top draft spot. Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, and the two-time unanimous All-American Anderson on Monday announced their decisions to skip their senior seasons, two days after leading Alabama to a 45-20 victory over Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl. Tailback Jahmyr Gibbs also is heading to the NFL and coach Nick Saban said other players could follow.

They endeared themselves to Crimson Tide faithful even more by not joining the ranks of bowl opt-outs among NFL prospects. Young passed for 321 yards and five touchdowns in New Orleans. He got a loud ovation from Alabama fans when he was substituted out for backup Jalen Milroe in the fourth quarter, and later a salute from Kansas State coach Chris Klieman. "That's what college football is about. I was happy Bryce played," Klieman said after the game. "That was really good for college football and really good for kids to see." Anderson is one of the top pass rushers in Alabama history and is even more acclaimed than Young. He is only the second two-time Nagurski Trophy wnner and he also won both the Lombardi Award and Lott IMPACT Trophy as a junior. Gibbs, a Georgia Tech transfer, ran for 926 yards and seven touchdowns and gained 444 yards on 44 catches. - AP College Football

  12/31/22 - QB *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Bryce Young passed for 321 yards and five touchdowns in a game that other top NFL prospects might have skipped, and No. 5 Alabama responded to an early two-score deficit with 35 straight points to defeat 11th-ranked Kansas State 45-20 in the Sugar Bowl on Saturday. While a number of pro-bound college stars sat out bowl games that were not part of the College Football Playoff, the Crimson Tide and Wildcats had their best prospects on the field and making a number of memorable plays - from Young's pivotal passes, to Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn's 88-yard touchdown run to interceptions by Alabama's Jordan Battle and Brian Branch. Young was substituted out during a series in the fourth quarter, raising his right hand to Alabama fans who loudly rose to their feet as the former Heisman Trophy winner trotted to the sideline.

Jermaine Burton caught three passes for 87 yards and a touchdown for Alabama (11-2). Tide running back Jahmyr Gibbs had 142 yards from scrimmage - 76 rushing and 66 receiving. Young's other touchdowns went to Isaiah Bond (6 yards), Cameron Latu (1 yard), Ja'Corey Brooks (32 yards) and Kobe Prentice (47 yards). Jase McClelland added a 17-yard scoring run. Kansas State (10-4) entered its first Sugar Bowl on a four-game winning streak and was riding high after knocking off No. 3 TCU - a CFP team - in the Big 12 title game. While Battle's leaping interception of Will Howard ended K-State's opening drive on the Alabama 21, the Wildcats scored the Sugar Bowl’s first 10 points, surging in front on Ty Zentner's 41-yard field goal and Vaughn's long run. Alabama was on the brink of punting a third time when Young, on third and 10, stepped up in a collapsing pocket and flicked a short pass to Gibbs, who was cutting across the middle and turned up field for a 60-yard gain. Young stepped up similarly to avoid pressure on his touchdown pass to Bond shortly after. Young threw over the top to Burton for 47 yards to setup his 1-yard scoring pass Latu that put Alabama in front for good. - Alabama/AP College Football

  11/26/22 - QB *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Bryce Young passed for 343 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score in perhaps his final home game for No. 8 Alabama, leading the Crimson Tide past Auburn 49-27 in Saturday's Iron Bowl. Alabama (10-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference, No. 7 CFP) reached double digits in wins for a 15th consecutive season despite being unable to fulfill those ever-present national title aspirations. The Tigers (5-7, 2-6) were trying to ensure bowl eligibility and salvage a disappointing campaign that included the Oct. 31 firing of coach Bryan Harsin. Young, a junior, completed 20 of 30 passes with an interception and ran for 48 yards. The 2021 Heisman Trophy winner is projected as a high NFL draft pick if he leaves early, as is Tide All-America linebacker Will Anderson Jr., who had a fourth-quarter sack to help stall a late Auburn drive. Auburn ran for 318 yards, its most against Alabama since gaining 355 in 1983. But the Tigers' passing game was pretty much nonexistent.

Quarterback Robby Ashford became the first Auburn player to run for two touchdowns in the Iron Bowl since Carnell Williams - now the Tigers' interim coach - in 2003. Ashford gained 121 yards on the ground but passed for just 77, though that included a pretty much perfect 20-yard touchdown pass to J'aVarrious Johnson in the right corner of the end zone. Jarquez Hunter ran 11 times for 134 yards but also lost a fumble. Williams and Auburn settled for two field goals in the fourth quarter and gave up a late touchdown run by Jahmyr Gibbs. For Auburn, the week was dominated by speculation about who athletic director John Cohen would hire to replace Harsin. The most talked-about candidate, Mississippi's Lane Kiffin, said he's staying put. Liberty's Hugh Freeze said after his team's regular-season finale Saturday he hadn't been offered the job but confirmed his interest. - Alabama/AP College Football

  11/12/22 - QB *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Bryce Young threw three touchdowns passes and No. 10 Alabama scored on four consecutive possessions spanning the second and third quarters, rallying to beat No. 11 Mississippi 30-24 on Saturday. Will Reichard kicked field goals of 23 and 49 yards in the fourth quarter to snap a 24-all tie. Alabama (8-2, 5-2 SEC) secured the win by forcing an incomplete pass into the Crimson Tide end zone in the final minute to extend its seven-game winning streak over the Rebels.

Young finished 21 of 33 for 209 yards, including touchdown throws to Jermaine Burton, Cameron Latu and Ja'Courey Brooks. Alabama trailed 10-0 early and 17-14 at halftime. The Crimson Tide made efficient use of 317 yards of total offense and a defense that stopped three Ole Miss opportunities in the final quarter. Ole Miss (8-2, 4-2) was led by Quinshon Judkins, who had 135 yards on 25 carries and a pair of 1-yard TD runs. Judkins highlighted the game's final drive with runs of 35 and 13 yards to get the Rebels to the Alabama 14-yard line before the Crimson Tide got the game-clinching stop. - Alabama/AP College Football

Bryce Young passed for 249 yards and two touchdowns and No. 6 Alabama's defense continued its domination of No. 24 Mississippi State in a 30-6 victory Saturday night. The Crimson Tide (7-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) rebounded from their first loss of the season, a 52-49 defeat to No. 3 Tennessee. Alabama defenders got a measure of redemption after giving up more points than any Alabama team since 1907. The normally prolific Will Rogers and the Bulldogs (5-3, 3-3) still couldn't reach the end zone against Alabama until the final play. It was the first touchdown Mississippi State had managed against the Tide in three meetings under coach Mike Leach, getting outscored (120-15).

Rogers completed 30 of 60 passes for 231 yards. Jo'quavious Marks scored on a 1-yard run to end the game. Young completed 21 of 35 passes with a couple of long ones on scrambles, including a 31-yard TD to JoJo Earle. This one didn't turn into a showdown of star quarterbacks, however, but a statement game for Bama's defense. The Tide, which started LSU transfer cornerback Eli Ricks for the first time, had 15 pass breakups and four sacks after getting victimized by the Volunteers. Ricks, who didn't play against Tennessee, and fellow cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry each broke up four passes. Alabama has won the last four meetings at Bryant-Denny Stadium by a combined 136-9. - Alabama/AP College Football

No. 3 Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, who missed last week's game against Texas A&M with a sprained shoulder, started Saturday's game at No. 6 Tennessee. According to coach Nick Saban, the Heisman-winning quarterback was considered a game-time decision all week. Young has completed 90 of 134 passes for 1,202 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. He has been intercepted three times. - AP College Football

Bryce Young has been able to practice some this week ahead of Tennessee, Nick Saban said Wednesday morning. "He's making progress," Saban said. He added that Alabama will continue to evaluate Young as the week progresses. The Alabama football quarterback injured his throwing shoulder in the game against Arkansas on Oct. 1. He left in the second quarter and has not played since. Saban called it a "little AC sprain" in Young's shoulder after Arkansas. He didn't play against Texas A&M, but Saban said Young wanted to enter the game late. "I didn't think he was in a position that he could go and effectively do his job in the way he's capable of doing it," Saban said Wednesday. "He's made a lot of progress from that point, so hopefully that will change in the near future."

The injury stemmed from an incident in which Young landed on his shoulder awkwardly after running toward the sideline to evade a rusher against Arkansas. Young played briefly after that, but he eventually left the game and went to the medical tent to be evaluated. Young stayed in uniform through the rest of the game After the win over the Razorbacks, Saban said he thought Young was OK and that it was not serious. In the week leading up to the Texas A&M game, Saban deemed Young a game-time-decision. Young joined the team on the field for warmups in uniform, but he did not throw any footballs. - Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young didn't start the game against Texas A&M because of sprained right shoulder, leaving Jalen Milroe as his replacement. Aggies starter Max Johnson also was out. The top-ranked Crimson Tide's coach, Nick Saban, hadn't shed much light on the reigning Heisman Trophy winner Young's status all week, calling him day to day. Johnson, who had started the past three games for the Aggies, also was replaced with an injured throwing hand. Haynes King returned to the starting role he lost to the LSU transfer after two games. Unlike Young, Johnson was on the sideline in sweats.

Young came out onto the field for warmups 50 minutes before kickoff, taking snaps alongside the backups, and was even announced as the starter. But he didn't throw along with the other quarterbacks. Young was injured when he landed on his shoulder early in the Arkansas game, and Milroe wound up playing most of the game. Alabama visits No. 8 Tennessee next Saturday in easily the biggest game yet. Young has passed for 1,202 yards and 14 touchdowns against three interceptions this season. He has also run for 154 yards and three scores. - AP College Football

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young left the No. 2 Crimson Tide's game against No. 20 Arkansas midway through the second quarter Saturday after an apparent injury to his throwing shoulder. The Heisman Trophy winner came off the field after Alabama's fifth drive ended at its own 42, favoring his right arm and holding it close to his body after attempting a pass that went incomplete. Young, who had already thrown a touchdown pass and run for a score, threw his helmet down before entering the medical tent on the Alabama sideline.

He was then seen leaving the field, running up the tunnel with his arm still pressed close to his side. Young threw for 173 yards before he left with 10:42 remaining in the first half. Jalen Milroe came in for Young and scored a rushing touchdown on Alabama's next offensive possession to put the Tide up 21-0. On the drive before Young exited, he was sacked for a 4-yard loss by Arkansas linebacker Drew Sanders, a teammate of Young's with the Crimson Tide last year. Young landed awkwardly on his front side during the sack but returned for the next drive. His status to return to the game was unclear. - AP College Football

  09/24/22 - QB *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Bryce Young passed for a season-high 385 yards and four touchdowns and No. 2 Alabama beat Vanderbilt 55-3 Saturday night in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams. It was the first 300-yard game of the season for the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, who didn't play in the fourth quarter and completed 25 of 36 passes. The Crimson Tide (4-0, 1-0) opted to air it out against the Commodores (3-2, 0-1) and finally got big games and plays from multiple receivers. It was the most passing yards for Young since perhaps locking up the Heisman with 421 yards against Georgia in the SEC championship game. "I think it was kind of our plan going into this game that we would spread these guys out more and try to attack them in the secondary," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "We thought we had some pretty good matchups." Alabama outgained Vandy 628-129 in total yards.

Ja'Corey Brooks had a career night, all in the first half when he had six catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Georgia transfer Jermaine Burton had his biggest game for the Tide: 94 yards on four catches, including a 48-yarder. "We have high expectations for what our guys can do and Ja'Corey certainly didn't disappoint tonight," Saban said. "He had a great start to the game." Jahmyr Gibbs, who started the first three games at tailback, mostly lined up at receiver while Jase McClellan took over in the backfield. McClellan ran for 78 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Gibbs caught three passes for 43 yards and a score. Vanderbilt freshman AJ Swann completed 13 of 26 passes for 115 yards in his second start after throwing for 255 yards and four touchdowns against Northern Illinois. - Alabama/AP College Football

Bryce Young passed for three touchdowns and rushed for a fourth, Will Anderson Jr. scored on an interception return and No. 2 Alabama rolled to a 63-7 victory over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday. The Crimson Tide (3-0) scored on offense, defense and special teams in the first six minutes and raced to a 28-0 first-quarter lead. It was a whirlwind start against the 49 1/2-point underdog Warhawks (1-2) a week after a much closer-than-expected victory over Texas cost Alabama the No. 1 ranking. It wasn't a seamless performance for either the Tide offense or Young, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. He completed 13 of 18 passes for 236 yards but also threw his first two interceptions of the season. He did run for a 7-yard score, where he spun near the goal line and dove across.

Anderson returned his first career interception 25 yards for a touchdown, one play after Young's initial pick. The national sacks leader a year ago, he also got his second sack of the season. Malachi Moore got a short scoop-and-score after Ja'Corey Brooks' blocked punt. Chandler Rogers completed 11 of 21 passes 96 yards for Louisiana-Monroe and was intercepted once. Malik Jackson ran for an 11-yard touchdown. Jahmyr Gibbs remained the Tide's most versatile weapon. He gained 36 yards on nine carries and caught four passes for 65 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown when he juked one defender and shed a couple of downfield tackle attempts. The Tide outgained Louisiana-Monroe 509-169. - Alabama/AP College Football

Will Reichard kicked a 33-yard field goal with 10 seconds left, and Bryce Young and No. 1 Alabama overcame a stifling defensive effort by Texas to earn a hard-fought 20-19 victory Saturday. Young was hit and harassed by the Texas defense most of the game, but the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback put together a big fourth quarter. He had a twisting, off-balance touchdown pass, and then a 20-yard scramble in the final minute to set up Reichard's winning kick. Young easily dodged a blitzing defender, then had wide open field ahead of him to scamper. Young's clutch play rescued Alabama on an uncharacteristically sloppy day when the Crimson Tide (2-0) struggled with penalties and dropped passes and was forced into six consecutive punts in one stretch. Texas (1-1) stuffed Alabama on fourth-and-inches late to set up a go-ahead field goal by Bert Auburn with 1:39 remaining.

Young also spoiled what could have been a program-defining victory for Texas and second-year coach Steve Sarkisian. Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers was knocked out with a shoulder injury at the end of the first quarter. The steady hand of backup Hudson Card and an inspired defense helped Texas build a 16-10 lead early in the fourth, and then drive for the lead again on Auburn's fourth field goal of the day. Young was 27-of-39 passing for 213 yards with the scrambling TD throw to Jahmyr Gibbs that gave Alabama a 17-16 lead. Jase McLellan had an 81-yard touchdown run for Alabama in the first quarter. Alabama avoided its first nonconference loss since 2007 against Louisiana-Monroe in coach Nick Saban's first season. - Alabama/AP College Football

Bryce Young's five touchdown passes were nothing all that new for Alabama's Heisman Trophy winner. That 63-yard sprint down the left sideline and other big runs presented a seldom seen side of his game. Young didn't just throw for those touchdowns - all in the first half - he even ran for 100 yards and a score in No. 1 Alabama's 55-0 opening victory over Utah State on Saturday night. It was, he said, a "cool" and "interesting" experience. "I just try to do whatever is best for this team, whatever the defense gives us," Young said. "That's definitely interesting. It definitely wasn't something I was planning. For me, it's just taking whatever the defense gives us. "Today that was just what was available. It's cool." The Crimson Tide began their quest for national title redemption with a not unexpected start-to-finish domination of the six-touchdown underdog Aggies (1-1). Less anticipated: Young's runs.

Known primarily as a passer with a penchant for scrambling and buying time, Young flashed his running ability more than he ever did last season, including a 63-yarder down the left sideline. He also spread the ball around to Alabama's new set of playmakers, with two touchdown passes to both Georgia transfer Jermaine Burton and Traeshon Holden and some handoffs to Jahmyr Gibbs. Young ran five times after netting zero yards thanks to sacks last season with a previous long run of 16 yards. He also completed 18 of 28 passes for 195 yards before exiting one drive into the second half following his TD run. "I see Bryce do that on the regular, so it wasn't really new to me," Alabama safety Brian Branch said. "Just watching him be himself out there is truly amazing. Playing with a Heisman winner, I can't describe it." - Alabama/AP College Football

The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, announced its preseason Watch List on Thursday. The list includes 30 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2022 season. The winner will again be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.

This year's Watch List includes players from all 10 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences. The SEC leads the way with six selections, while the ACC and Big Ten have five each. Five of last year's Manning Award finalists are included on this year's Watch List, led by the 2021 Manning Award winner Bryce Young from Alabama. Joining Young as returning finalists are Brennan Armstrong (Virginia), Sam Hartman (Wake Forest), Will Rogers (Mississippi State) and C.J. Stroud (Ohio State). - The Manning Award

As fall camp is set to open later this week, Alabama coach Nick Saban stressed what he is emphasizing to his Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young. Saban, who joined "The Next Round" on Tuesday, was asked about Young's maturity he put on display last month at SEC Media Days, not that it is something we haven't all seen for some time. "What we admire about Bryce is he's very bright," Saban explained of Young. "He does a good job of preparing. He's always on top of exactly what we want to do, how we want to execute it. The thing we try to emphasize with him - because he has a calm demeanor - is his presence is important to the rest of the players. He's made strides in affecting other people on offense in a positive way."

He was also told an NFL scout said Young's abilities resembled those of Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers. "Aaron Rodgers is, obviously, a fantastic player," Saban said. "He's been that way for a long time. That's the key to being successful. How guys can deal with success. How they can continue to stay focused and not get satisfied. Have a relentless competitive attitude about continuing to grow and develop at the position. "Both guys have demonstrated that. I know Aaron Rodgers has. So far in the program, Bryce has done the same thing. - Birmingham News

The 2022 watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2022 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 130 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show (date TBD).   A new retail store is coming to Bryant-Denny Stadium as part of an expanded partnership the University of Alabama announced Monday with sports retailer Fanatics. Located in the marketplace below the south end zone seats and expected to open during the 2022 football season, the store is part of the next step in the NIL strategy. Called The Authentic, the retail outlet will have an area set aside for current athletes to conduct autograph signings and meet and greets and "conduct social media marketing to support sales of their NIL merchandise," the UA news release reads. "Fanatics will work with OneTeam Partners in securing group licensing rights for activation for NIL rights on merchandise, in addition to separate marketing and autographs partnerships," according to the UA news release. The OneTeam partnership allows athletes the ability to share in the revenue when fans buy the jersey featuring their name and number. - Birmingham News

The media vote is in and...it's a lot like previous years. For the seventh straight year, Alabama was picked to win the SEC championship in balloting at SEC media days. Defending champion Georgia was picked to win the East Division but received just 18 voting points to win the championship. Alabama had 158. Alabama's been the pick in 11 of the past 13 years. The only deviations came in 2012 when LSU was picked and 2015 when it was Auburn. Alabama would go on to win the league title in both of those seasons. In the string of six straight years of media picking the Tide, Alabama finished the season as SEC champions four times. - Birmingham News

Tim Tebow appeared as a guest on "The Paul Finebaum Show" on Tuesday from the 2022 Southeastern Conference Media Days in Atlanta. Bryce Young, the Alabama quarterback and 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, was one of the first topics that Tebow and Paul Finebaum discussed. Finebaum asked Tebow what he remembers about coming to SEC Media Days. Tebow played quarterback at Florida from 2006-09, and he won the Heisman Trophy in 2007.

Tebow briefly talked about himself then transitioned to talking about Young. Tim Tebow on Bryce Young, Nissan Heisman House commercials..."Bryce is so poised," Tebow said. "I was with him just this past week in Pasadena, California, for the Nissan Heisman House commercials, which are so much fun to film with him. We filmed several together. He's just so calm and poised and nothing flusters him. You'll say, 'Well that's silly, you're comparing him to a commercial.' But that's just who he is. It's just his presence around all these former winners and on camera and everything. It never changes. He is always so steady and so even and calm." - Montgomery Advertiser

The monumental shift that name, image and likeness laws brought to college athletics often came with more questions than answers. How does it really work? And how much money is circulating above the table with athletes now able to legally profit from their status? Nick Saban put a number to it at SEC media days Tuesday in Atlanta. The Crimson Tide football coach said Alabama players brought in $3 million in NIL money in the first year after the laws and rules changed. "I'm all for the players being able to do as well as they can and use name, image and likeness to be able to create value for themselves," Saban said. "We have a great brand at Alabama so their value is going to be enhanced because of the value our brand helped them create."

Saban previously said that number was made by 25 of the Alabama football players. And before the 2021 SEC media days, Saban told a group of high school football coaches in Texas that quarterback Bryce Young was already approaching the $1 million mark in NIL money before starting a game with the Tide. The money Alabama players made last year came before the state repealed its NIL law that prohibited the collectives that have become such a part of this shifting landscape. - Birmingham News

If there's any sign of Alabama's football talent level abating, it doesn't show in the 76th annual AL.com/Birmingham News SEC post-spring football report. The Crimson Tide placed 11 players on the preseason All-SEC teams, in voting by the league's 14 football information directors. Alabama put six players on the first team, with five on the second team. Leading the way is reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young, who easily outdistanced the competition at quarterback. Guard Emil Ekiyor also landed on the first-team offense. Young, a junior from Pasadena, Calif., set Alabama program records for passing yards (4,872) and touchdown passes (47) in becoming the Crimson Tide's second straight Heisman winner (and first at quarterback). In his first season as a starter, he led Alabama to the SEC title and a berth in the national championship game. - Birmingham News

Bryce Young has had the look. His dad, Craig Young, knows it well. He's witnessed it before. Several times, in fact, throughout the Alabama football quarterback's life. And it's back this offseason. "I can see that look in his eyes where he's been so motivated," Craig said. It appeared whenever Young spent the duration of an offseason day throwing, working out and lifting. Not traveling or taking a bunch of time off. Just working. "I've seen that in him before," Craig said. "And I know what that means." Craig saw that in 2016, when his son aimed to beat out the incumbent upperclassman starter even though Young would be only a high school freshman.

The two quarterbacks ended up splitting time that year. Then there was 2019. After he threw 39 touchdowns as a junior en route to all-state recognition, Young pushed to get even better. He ended up throwing 58 touchdowns and rushing for 10 his senior year. The look appeared again in 2021 when Young strived to take advantage of the open Alabama quarterback spot. He ended up winning the Heisman Trophy. "This," Craig said, "looks very familiar to those times." - Montgomery Advertiser

The latest round of NCAA academic data shows Alabama athletes outperformed national benchmarks. The Monday release of the Academic Progress Rate (APR) revealed that 15 of the 19 Crimson Tide teams bettered the national average in their respective sports. Seven Alabama teams scored a perfect 1,000 in the multi-year APR rates ending with the 2020-21 season. And among football programs, the Crimson Tide had the third-highest score among FBS schools. Its 997 ranked behind only Clemson and Ole Miss, both of whom scored 999. That score will earn Nick Saban a $100,000 bonus since Alabama's score ranks in the top four among SEC football programs, according to his contract last updated in the summer of 2021. The 997 is the highest score for an Alabama football team since the APR was introduced in the 2004-05 academic year. - Birmingham News

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young was named Tuesday as the state's amateur athlete of the year by the membership of the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Young edged Auburn gymnast Suni Lee for the award in voting that was described as "extremely close" by ASWA president Christopher Walsh. The other nominees for the award were Alabama softball pitcher Montana Fouts, Mississippi State outfielder Tanner Allen and Virginia swimmer Paige Madden. Allen, from Theodore, was SEC baseball player of the year in 2021 and helped lead MSU to a national title. Madden, another graduate of UMS-Wright Prep in Mobile, was MVP of the NCAA swimming championships. Voting for the annual award closed May 9. Young is the second consecutive winner from the University of Alabama, following DeVonta Smith last year.   Alabama coach Nick Saban tried to put an end to his feud with Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher on Tuesday as Southeastern Conference leaders gathered for spring meetings at a resort on the Florida Gulf Coast. "I didn't really say that anybody did anything wrong," Saban said when asked if he had evidence that Texas A&M has been buying players with name, image and likeness compensation deals. "OK, and I've said everything I'm going to say about this. I should have never mentioned any individual institutions as I've said that before." Saban added: "I have no problem with Jimbo. I have no problem with Jimbo at all." Saban set off Fisher two weeks ago when he called out Texas A&M and other schools while talking about the need for NIL regulation in college sports.

Fisher responded angrily, saying Saban's comments were despicable and calling his former boss at LSU a "narcissist" while denying any wrongdoing with his program that landed the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for 2022. The SEC spring meetings - taking place in person for the first time since 2019 because of the pandemic -- were the first opportunity for the two superstar coaches to meet face-to-face since the dustup. Fisher was not scheduled to meet with reporters Tuesday. Georgia coach Kirby Smart downplayed the back and forth between Fisher and Saban. Smart worked under Saban for years, including a season at LSU when Fisher was Saban's offensive coordinator. "You guys should be on the headphones sometimes," Smart said, referencing the interaction between coaches on game days. "It just happened in front of everybody." - AP College Football

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin questioned why Alabama quarterback Bryce Young did not enter the NCAA transfer portal and use it as leverage to increase the Heisman Trophy winner's NIL earnings. "Why did Bryce Young not go into the portal?" Kiffin said during a Sports Illustrated interview last week that was published Wednesday. "If you are advising Bryce Young, why do you not go into the portal and walk into Nick Saban's office and say, "Hey, I want to be here, but I've got to protect myself so I'm going to go into the portal. And I want to come back as long as it's matched with what I get out there." "The kid would make 10 times what he would have made. How's that not going to happen all the time? It should. It will." Young is the projected No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft by ESPN, which assumes he will leave college after his upcoming junior season.

Less than three weeks into the NCAA's rule change about NIL last July, Alabama coach Nick Saban said Young had already amassed close to $1 million in NIL deals. It is not known how much Young has made since last summer, but Saban said at a World Games event last week that 25 players from Alabama last season earned NIL deals totaling $3 million. Although Kiffin suggested Young should enter the transfer portal, none of Alabama's highest-performing players have done so. - Birmingham News

Although Saban on Thursday backed off comments he made about Texas A&M's top-ranked 2022 recruiting class, the Alabama coach stood by the rest of what he said Wednesday night about how NIL is being used in recruiting in a way that is consistent with NCAA policy but inconsistent with the original intent of the relaxed rules. "We have players in our state that grew up wanting to come to Alabama that they won't commit to us unless we say we're going to give them what somebody else is going to give them," Saban said at an event previewing July's World Games in Birmingham. "Our job is not to buy you to come to school here." Saban instead proposed a model to the Associated Press last month, and ESPN again Thursday, that would provide each player with a set amount of NIL revenue -- between $20,000 and $25,000, he told ESPN -- and then players could earn more on their own on top of that.

"That way, nobody feels that one player is getting a bunch of money to come here and another player feels like he's not getting anything," Saban explained to ESPN. Saban has frequently compared the current model of college football, which includes relaxed transfer rules in addition to NIL revenue, to free agency in professional sports -- but with no salary cap. "That's basically what we have, right?" he said Thursday to ESPN. "There's no professional league that has that circumstance because none of them are stupid enough to have it, and that's what we have. "The hard thing is there are no guardrails on this road. You can do whatever the hell you want, and in the end, most of this is not good for the players." - Birmingham News

Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett (28, 631) finished third and Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud (12, 399) was fourth. Alabama linebacker Will Anderson Jr. (31, 325) was fifth, putting two defensive players in the top five for the first time since 1962.
