The Oregon Ducks will have a new starting middle linebacker in 2023. Three-year starter Noah Sewell declared for the NFL draft on Thursday. He will not play in the Holiday Bowl against North Carolina, according to a source with knowledge of the matter. Sewell had 56 tackles with 5.5 for loss, including 1.5 sacks, an interception, fumble recovery and four pass breakups this season for the Ducks. He led the Ducks with 114 tackles, with 8.5 for loss and four sacks in 2021, and tied for the team lead in tackles (45) in 2020.

Over 33 career games, Sewell had 215 tackles with 20.5 for loss, including 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, two interceptions and 11 pass breakups. The 6-foot-2, 243-pound Sewell is the second Oregon player to declare for this year's draft, joining cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Sewell was a five-star recruit ranked No. 13 overall and No. 2 among inside linebackers in the class of 2020. He's the fifth-highest-rated recruit to sign with UO in the modern recruiting era. - The Oregonian

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 10. Noah Sewell, rSo, ILB, Oregon, 6-2, 253, 1,...Sewell showed up on stats sheet with only one tackle in a 70-14 win over the Eastern Washington Eagles. The Ducks were recovering from their 49-3 thrashing of Oregon and everybody looked better against the Eagles. Previous week, No.9: Considered the best inside linebacker in the nation and a wrecking ball on defense, Sewell collected only two tackles with one assist in Oregon's embarrassing, 49-3, loss to Georgia. The Ducks seemed to be totally manhandled and it may take some film study to see if Sewell salvaged any self-respect in this one. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 17. Noah Sewell, LB, Oregon, Sophomore. Notable 2021 stats: 114 tackles (53 solo), 4 sacks, 2 FF, 1 INT. Last year's ranking: NR. After a season of 114 tackles, four sacks two forced fumbles and a whole lot of changes at Oregon, Sewell is the mainstay the Ducks badly need. With Dan Lanning - a defensive-minded head coach - stepping into the fold, Sewell is bound to build on last season's success. Questions abound on the offensive side of the ball, so Oregon is going to need an encore from Sewell as the leader of the Ducks' defense to make some noise this season. The good news? He's plenty capable. - ESPN.com

The Butkus Award honoring the nation's best linebackers kicked off its 38th annual selection process today by announcing its collegiate preseason watch list. The watch list features 51 linebackers, mirroring the legendary "51" pro jersey associated with the award's namesake, Dick Butkus, who was recognized by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history. The Butkus Award is focused on recognizing linebackers who consistently play off the ball on their feet in a two-point stance in traditional form.

The collegiate Butkus Award watch list includes candidates from 43 schools, including three returning semifinalists: Iowa's Jack Campbell, Texas' DeMarvion Overshown and Oregon's Noah Sewell. The SEC leads all conferences with 12 representatives, followed by the Pac-12 with nine. Teammates from seven schools – Alabama, BYU, Cincinnati, Iowa, N.C. State, Oregon, and UCLA – have been named to the list and all 10 Division I FBS conferences are represented. The award semifinalists are expected to be named Oct. 31 with finalists to follow Nov. 21. The winner will be named on or before Dec. 7. Appearing on the watch list is not a requirement to win the award. - Butkus Award

Last week after UCLA and USC decided to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten beginning in 2024, many speculated that Oregon and Washington could follow them. However, the Ducks and the Huskies could leave the Pac-12 for another conference. According to CBS Sports, the Big 12 is involved in "deep discussions" to add multiple Pac-12 schools. At least four schools - Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah - are being considered. The Big 12 is also contemplating adding Oregon and Washington to form an 18-team conference, which would be the biggest in the FBS.

Behind all this is the upcoming television contracts. The Big 12's deals with ESPN and FOX expire in 2025, while the Pac-12 contract with both networks is set to end in 2024. On Tuesday, the Pac-12 released a statement saying it met and authorized the conference to begin negotiations for its next media rights agreement immediately. It isn't a huge surprise the Big 12 is discussing a super conference in the wake of the Big Ten adding UCLA and USC and the SEC grabbing Oklahoma and Texas around the 2025 season. Without UCLA and USC, the Pac-12 is a shell of its former self. So losing Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and Colorado would likely be the final nail in the conference's coffin. - Register Guard

It hasn't taken new defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter long to become enamored with one of the young stars he inherited when former DC Andy Avalos left for Boise State. Second-year freshman inside linebacker Noah Sewell, the 2020 Pac-12 defensive freshman of the year, has been a standout performer during the first two weeks of fall camp. "I think Noah's practicing as good as anybody on our defense right now," DeRuyter raved. "Every time we turn that tape on, whether it's guys making strip attempts to take the ball away, whether it's guys pursuing the football, whether it's guys finishing a tackle, he's almost always on the example tape. I think it's just a really nice testament to him and (co-defensive coordinator/inside linebackers coach Ken Wilson) getting him to that point."

As a true freshman, the 6-3, 251-pound Sewell led the Ducks in tackles last season with 45 and led all Pac-12 freshmen in tackles for loss (6.5) and sacks (2.0). Of course, DeRuyter knew all this when he took the Oregon job in December. Watching it live in the spring and again now, remains impressive. "The intensity with which he practices at really sets a high standard for everybody else and sets that bar where everybody has to go play at his level," DeRuyter said. - Register Guard

Linebacker Noah Sewell and cornerback Mykael Wright are on the preseason watch lists for the Butkus Award and Jim Thorpe Award, respectively. Sewell, a five-star recruit in the 2020 recruiting class, led the Ducks with 45 tackles while earning Pac-12 freshman defensive player of the year honors. He also led the conference's freshmen in tackles for loss (6.5) and sacks (2.0). The other Pac-12 players on the list for the Butkus Award given to the nation's top linebacker are Colorado's Nate Landman, Oregon State's Avery Roberts, USC's Drake Jackson, Utah's Devin Lloyd and Washington's Zion Tupuola-Fetui and Edefuan Ulofoshio. - Register Guard

Penei Sewell will have to wait a little bit longer before making his first appearance on the NFL practice field. The Detroit Lions will be without Sewell, their 2021 first-round pick, when they hold their rookie minicamp this week after Sewell announced on Twitter that he had tested positive for COVID-19. "Found out this past weekend I tested positive for COVID," Sewell wrote on Twitter. "Really wish I was heading to my new home today and able to be at mini-camp with my new teammates and coaches. Look forward to getting out to the D as soon as I'm cleared!" The Lions selected Sewell - who opted out last season at Oregon due to the pandemic - with the No. 7 overall pick in the draft and he is expected to start at right tackle for the team. - The Oregonian

Kayvon Thibodeaux wore a microphone during last Saturday's scrimmage at Autzen Stadium. In a video released by Oregon, one of the better mic'd up moments was from the star defensive end/outside linebacker's interaction with Noah Sewell. "Hey, Noah, live means tackle, not kill," Thibodeaux said. Even in a controlled practice setting, where players are encouraged not to tackle their teammates to the ground, Sewell was sending bodies to the turf throughout his time on the field, including the menacing middle linebacker's violent takedown of running back Travis Dye. Playing every snap aggressively is about to pay off in a big way for Sewell's brother, former Oregon left tackle Penei Sewell, who is expected to be a top-10 pick in next Thursday's NFL draft. The apple didn't fall far from the football family tree for the younger Sewell.

"That person across from you, I'm trying to pursue my dreams, and he's the only one stopping me from pursuing my dreams," Sewell said of his relentless approach during a Zoom with the local media Thursday. Sewell was a five-star recruit and lived up to the billing by earning Pac-12 defensive freshman of the year and Football Writers Association of American freshman all-American honors in 2020 after finishing tied for the team lead with 45 tackles, including a team-high 24 solo stops. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound second-year freshman is expected to have a starring role for new defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter. "We're going to have guys like Noah, a traditional inside linebacker, but we're also going to have him up at the line of scrimmage and bring him off edges," DeRuyter said. - Register Guard

Noah Sewell, the Pac-12 freshman defensive player of the year, was named to the Football Writers Association of America 2020 freshman all-American team on Monday.   Oregon's defense forced four turnovers that led to 28 points and came up with the game-saving stop on the Bruins' final drive with 19 second left with Sewell watching from the sideline on crutches. After the Ducks improved to 3-0, coach Mario Cristobal was cautiously optimistic the talented true freshman's lower-leg injury was not as serious as it looked. Sewell, who leads the team with three tackles for loss and two sacks, returned to practice on Monday as No. 9 Oregon gears up for Friday's rivalry game at Oregon State. "Noah looks good," Cristobal said. "Looks normal to me."
