It's no secret by now that Michigan is going to do everything it can to put Daxton Hill in advantageous positions this fall. The junior safety is the Wolverines' best defensive back, both from a speed and athleticism standpoint and statistically (last year, in six starts, Hill racked up 46 tackles, an interception and had five pass deflections), and is most effective when he's around the ball. First-year defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald has said he plans to dispatch multiple-looking fronts and alignments in order to keep opposing teams guessing. And that will include playing Hill across the backfield - at his traditional free-safety role, of course, but also at "nickel" as a fifth defensive back and even cornerback.

"It's a lot from last year," Hill admitted Tuesday. "Really trying to hone in on every position - whether it's corner, safety or nickel. Really just learning my plays every day." To do that, Hill says, he's spending extra around the football facility after meetings. The task is no longer just honing in on one position, but finding "a good balance" between the three. Currently, Hill is still spending a majority of his time in practice at safety. But he's thrown in at nickel and corner as needed, when the team requires a substitute or a specific defensive package is called. "It's not like I'm a play here, play there," Hill said. "We have a lot of good corners right now, so whenever they need me in certain situations or packages - that's when I'm really going in."

He's only a junior, but with a productive season in 2021 it's feasible to think that Daxton Hill could depart early. The Tulsa, Okla., native already has the size (6 feet, 192 pounds) and speed to play at the next level. The production is there, too, with Hill recording 46 tackles, an interception and five pass deflections in five games for the Wolverines in 2020. Now that extrapolate that out to a 12- or 13-game season. One more year at the Big Ten level under a coaching staff with NFL experience should do Hill wonders. - Ann Arbor News

2020 ALL-BIG TEN FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Daxton Hill,...Defensive back Daxton Hill lists second on the team in tackles with 46 stops, including a team-leading 30 solo tackles. Hill has also recorded five pass breakups, including one interception in his first full season as a starter, second among Wolverine defenders. - Michigan Football

The departure of Ambry Thomas leaves Michigan's cornerback position less experienced and thin. The Wolverines are slated to return Vincent Gray, a backup who appeared in all 13 games last season, while a group of inexperienced underclassmen are frontrunners to land the second starting spot. Could that open the door for Daxton Hill? The former five-star prospect played as a fifth defensive back, and later started at safety, as a true freshman in 2019, but his speed and athleticism make him a potential candidate to slide over and cover receivers this fall. And speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown sounds open to it. "He can fit in anywhere he wants to fit in," Brown said. "That's how talented this guy is. Obviously he's a safety by trade, but he's a nickel by trade as well. "And really, that was his get-on-the-field role last year." - Ann Arbor News
