Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck had his contract extended Wednesday by an additional year with a $1 million raise in annual salary, after the latest round of big spending by Big Ten rivals. The new seven-year deal will run through the 2029 season, the university announced without releasing terms. Fleck will now make $6 million per year, a person with knowledge of the contract confirmed. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized. Last week, Nebraska hired Matt Rhule and Wisconsin hired Luke Fickell to put them in the top tier of head coach compensation in the conference.

In terms of average annual value, the 42-year-old Fleck is eighth in the Big Ten behind Michigan State's Mel Tucker, Ohio State's Ryan Day, Rhule, Fickell, Penn State's James Franklin, Michigan's Jim Harbaugh and Iowa's Kirk Ferentz. All seven of those coaches make $7 million or more per season. The Gophers (8-4) play Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 29. They're 3-0 in bowl games under Fleck, who was hired away from Western Michigan in 2017. Minnesota tied for second place in the Big Ten West Division this year, behind Purdue. Fleck is 43-27 overall with the Gophers, including 26-26 in conference play. They're 0-6 against Iowa and 3-3 against Wisconsin, their primary rivals. - AP College Football

Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said several times this season that, like a certain national hotel chain, "he'd leave a light on" for Tyler Nubin in regard to the standout safety's decision about leaving for the NFL draft or returning to play next season. On Friday, Nubin took Fleck up on his offer. "I'm not done yet," Nubin said in a video posted Friday afternoon on Twitter, announcing that he'll return to the team next fall. "I'm blessed to have the opportunity to finish out my degree and play one more season for my brothers, this team and the best fans in college football. Minnesota, I've come home." A second-team All-Big Ten selection this fall, Nubin will use the extra year of eligibility that the NCAA granted to players who participated in the 2020 season that was marred by COVID-19.

The rangy, 6-2, 210-pounder led the Gophers and tied for third in the Big Ten with four interceptions, and his 55 tackles ranked second on the team. He played in 11 games this season, missing the regular-season finale against Wisconsin with his right hand in a cast because of an injury suffered the previous week against Iowa. "It's hard when you lose your best player on defense, respectively. That was really hard for Tyler. It's a tough decision to make, but it's a family decision," Fleck said Saturday on Nubin's decision to have the injury addressed earlier rather than later. "...Rodney and Sherese [Nubin, Tyler's parents] made that decision, and I back them up 100 percent." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Safety Tyler Nubin, a fourth-year junior who earned honorable mention All-Big Ten last year, might be having the best training camp of any Gopher. He's developed into a confident and poised leader in a secondary that's brimming with athletic players. His highlight Monday came during a passing drill when he jumped the route on a pass that Morgan intended for Dylan Wright, intercepted it and took it back for a touchdown. "We always knew he was going to become a really, really good player,'' Rossi said. "...No one outworks him, so if you're a young guy, and you're looking at Tyler Nubin, it's like, 'This guy's really good at it and he works really, really hard. Maybe that's what I need to do." - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Senior safety Tyler Nubin has something new to show opposing Big Ten offenses this season as he hopes to continue the Gophers' pipeline of defensive backs into the NFL. Coming off a career year, the 6-2, 210-pound Illinois native added more to his game to prove he belongs amongst the best in the country. Nubin insists his biggest area of improvement is tackling. That's surprising since he already ranked third on the Gophers with 52 tackles, along with a team-high three interceptions last season. "In the spring as well as throughout the summer, that was something you guys could see took a big leap," Nubin said. "Attacking the football and just going to get the football is something I'm going to really focus on this season." The last defensive back known for his "attacking" style that played for the Gophers was current Tampa Bay Buccaneers free safety Antoine Winfield Jr., who was selected in the second round of the 2020 draft.

Winfield functioned as a mentor during Nubin's freshman season in 2019. Not only did Winfield display how to ferociously attack the ball carrier, but he was an avid student of the game. Now the younger players are watching how Nubin leads by example on and off the field. "[Nubin] has been an instrumental part of what we've done," Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said at Big Ten Media Days. "We did a tape the other day for our team and showed them the big plays from last year, and Tyler Nubin was around all of those...It's great to have Tyler here." - Minneapolis Star Tribune
