  12/01/21 - WR David BellJr/2023, Purdue, 6-2, 205 (DS#6 WR) + More +

2021 BIG TEN RICHTER-HOWARD RECEIVER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): David Bell, Purdue,...Bell became the second Purdue wide receiver to be selected as the Richter-Howard Receiver of the Year, joining Rondale Moore, who won the award in 2018. The honor is named after Big Ten legends Pat Richter (Wisconsin) and Desmond Howard (Michigan). One of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, Bell has been one of the best receivers nationwide. The Indianapolis native leads the Big Ten in catches per game (8.5) and receiving yards per game (116.9), ranking second and fourth in the country, respectively. With 1,286 receiving yards on the year, Bell is just 21 yards shy of the school record for a single season.

Eclipsing the 100-yard plateau in seven of his 11 games this season, Bell has set a new Purdue record with 17 career 100-yard receiving games. He also ranks in the school's all-time Top 10 for receptions (4th), receiving yards (5th) and receiving touchdowns (T-5th). Bell is averaging an FBS-leading 101.6 receiving yards per game for his career, the only active receiver in triple digits. His 8.0 receptions per game is currently the 2nd-most for an active NCAA career. - Purdue Football

Aidan O'Connell threw for 375 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, David Bell had a career-best 240 yards receiving and Purdue continued its recent mastery over No. 2 Iowa with a 24-7 victory Saturday. The Boilermakers (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) have won four of their last five games against the Hawkeyes (6-1, 3-1). The loss ended Iowa's 12-game winning streak. Purdue beat its highest-ranked opponent on the road since 1974 at No. 2 Notre Dame. It was the second time in four seasons Purdue has knocked off a No. 2-ranked team. The Boilermakers won at home over a second-ranked Ohio State in 2018.

O'Connell was 30-of-40 passing with two touchdowns and ran for a score. He got the most work on a day when Purdue used backup quarterbacks Jack Plummer and Austin Burton in select situations. All three were in on different plays during the Boilermakers' first-quarter drive that ended with O'Connell's 6-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead. O'Connell threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to TJ Sheffield in the final minute of the first half to give Purdue a 14-7 halftime lead. He threw a 21-yard TD pass to Bell in the fourth quarter. Bell had 11 receptions. He has a combined 37 catches for 558 yards and five touchdowns against Iowa in three seasons. The Hawkeyes' only score was a 3-yard touchdown run by Ivory Kelly-Martin in the second quarter, and Iowa had just 271 yards of offense. Iowa scored its fewest points at home since a 13-7 loss to Nebraska in 2012. - Purdue/AP College Football

Aidan O'Connell has a knack for leading game-winning drives. He engineered his second in as many weeks with help from kicker J.D. Dellinger. O'Connell threw for 271 yards and Dellinger kicked a 39-yard field goal with three seconds left Saturday as Purdue beat Northwestern 24-22 to keep its bowl hopes alive. O'Connell, a former walk-on, made his first start after Elijah Sindelar (broken left collarbone) and Jack Plummer (broken right ankle) went down with injuries. He guided the go-ahead drive late after Wildcats kicker Charlie Kuhbander's 32-yard field goal bounced off the left upright.

David Bell made 14 catches for 115 yards and a score as the Boilermakers rallied from down 14-0 in the first quarter. Northwestern lost its seventh straight, while Purdue beat the Wildcats for the first time since 2010 after losing five in a row. O'Connell quarterbacked the winning drive last week against Nebraska, and he came through again. "It wasn't a pretty game, and we had some moments where we looked really bad," Purdue coach Jeff Brohm said. "But we hung in there, and that has kind of been the sign of our team." Northwestern (1-8, 0-7 Big Ten) scored more points than in its four previous games combined, as receiver-turned-tailback Kyric McGowan rushed for 146 yards and a score. - Purdue/AP College Football

David Bell scored the go-ahead touchdown from nine yards out with 1:08 to play, and Purdue beat Nebraska 31-27 on Saturday. The Boilermakers (3-6, 2-4 Big Ten) took the lead for good after starting quarterback Jack Plummer left the game with a right ankle injury -- the latest player to be sidelined on a team plagued by injuries. Head coach Jeff Brohm said Purdue will likely be without Plummer for the remainder of the season after he needed help off the field following a run-play injury with 7:55 remaining. Plummer finished 25-of-34 passing with 242 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, and he rushed 61 yards on 12 carries.

The Boilermakers lost quarterback Elijah Sindelar (broken left collarbone) and All-American receiver Rondale Moore (left hamstring) four games ago and have lost three games since, making Saturday's win that much better. "It was a big win for our team today," Brohm said. "It has been rough at times this year. If you want to win, it's not supposed to be a whole lot of fun. We've made mistakes this year. We've been hard on our guys and quite demanding a bit. But you have to back off and allow these guys to play and make mistakes. - Purdue/AP College Football

Purdue receiver David Bell has been shredding defenses lately and the Boilermakers hope he can keep it up after winning the last two- Big Ten's freshman of the week awards. The Indianapolis native has topped the 100-yard mark three times in four games since Moore got hurt and has 22 catches for 235 yards and three touchdowns the last two weeks. "Every game, we're going to have to utilize him and make sure we get others involved as well," Brohm said. - AP College Football
