Mykael Wright wasn't dead set on declaring for the NFL draft during the season, but a productive year combined with Mario Cristobal's departure for Miami solidified his decision. "If I would've stayed this would've been my third (defensive coordinator) i n four years and my third corner coach in four years," Wright said. "It was a change, so why not if change is coming I can go through a change and further my career in the NFL. During the season I wasn't 100% sure about declaring, but when Cristobal left it kind of made the decision a little easier." Wright had 65 tackles, three tackles for loss, four pass breakups, an interception and a forced fumble last season. He also returned 12 kickoffs for an average of 27.7 yards and wants to continue being a ki ck returner and possibly punt returner in the NFL. - The Oregonian

Oregon's Mykael Wright was named to his second preseason watch list. The Ducks cornerback is among 57 players named to the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, which is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisv ille Sports Commission. An Oregon player has never won the Paul Hornung Award, which Alabama's DeVonta Smith won last year. Now the third-year sophomore is racking up the preseason accolades. Wright was named to the all-Pac-12 first team released Tuesday and appeared on the Hornung Award watch list Thursday. "He's one of the best athletes I've ever been around," Oregon corner backs coach Rod Chance said during spring practice. "If you show me a defensive back that can move and change direction as well as he does, or better, I'd like to see those dudes." The Hornung Award is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football. Wright had 270 yards on 13 kickoff returns in 2020. As a freshman in 2019, he became just the third player in program history to return multiple kickoffs for touchdowns in the same season.In his career, Wright has amassed 650 ki ckoff return yards with an average of 28.3 yards per attempt. Wright, who was an all-Pac-12 first team selection last season after finishing with 25 total tackles (18 solo stops), is also a preseason candidate for the Jim Thorpe Award given to the nation 's top defensive back.
