  10/31/21 - RB *Kyren WilliamsrSo/2022, Notre Dame, 5-09, 199 (DS#13 RB) + More +

On a night when he had a 91-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, Kyren Williams once again gave credit to his offensive line as No. 11 Notre Dame held off Sam Howell and upset-minded North Carolina 44-34 on Saturday in a game that had over 1,000 yards in offense. "Their blocking means everything to me because I know what they do every week," the 5-foot-9, 199-pound Williams said after rushing for a career-high 199 yards on 22 carries. "I just appreciate all of my boys working collectively as a group." Coach Brian Kelly's Fighting Irish improved to 7-1 with their third straight victory - and ruined the 400th collegiate game for North Carolina Hall of Fame coach Mack Brown. "We did some good things with good balance on offense running it and throwing it," Kelly said. "I really love this team. I love their grit but I like they are getting better." The Irish won despite being outgained by the Tar Heels (4-4) in total yardage, 554-523. But the Irish outrushed the Tar Heels 293-223.

Despite the loss, Brown was impressed by both teams' play. "I thought it was a great game," he said. "Both teams played really hard, both offenses ran up and down the field ,and neither defense played great." Howell, who became the Tar Heels' first quarterback with over 10,000 passing yards in his junior season, finished with 341 yards on 24-of-31 passing with one touchdown and one interception. He added another 101 yards on 18 carries, one a 31-yard touchdown run that kept the Tar Heels in it at 41-34 with 7:23 to play. It was the third game this season he has passed for over 300 yards and rushed for more than 100. "He's a warrior," Kelly said. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

  10/24/21 - RB *Kyren WilliamsrSo/2022, Notre Dame, 5-09, 199 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Kyren Williams and No. 13 Notre Dame's offensive line took a big step forward Saturday night, withstanding Southern California's fourth-quarter rally for a 31-16 victory. With fellow running back Chris Tyree sidelined by turf toe, Williams had two short touchdown runs and a season-high 138 yards on 25 carries for coach Brian Kelly's 6-1 team, and after the game saluted his offensive linemen for his performance. "Shoutout to the O-linemen for working hard and making it possible," Williams said about the rebuilt line that lost four starters from last season. "I just had to have the mindset to dominate and not be stopped by anybody." Williams, a preseason Associated Press All-American who rushed for 1,175 yards last season, entered Saturday's game with just 370 yards. He also gained another 42 yards with a team-high six receptions.

Williams scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter while helping the Irish to a 17-3 halftime lead and then added a 1-yard run late in the third quarter to put the Irish up 24-3 en route to their fourth straight victory in the 92-game series. "Kyren ran with an attitude that was just pervasive throughout the entire offense.," Kelly said. "We needed to see our offense mature, and tonight the offense began to come together the way we wanted. We played faster. We put Jack (Coan) in position where the ball came out quick. It gave us the kind of offensive flow we've been looking for." Coan completed 20 of 28 passes for 189 yards and one TD, a 4-yard scoring pass to Avery Davis that put the Irish up 7-0 in the first quarter. Jonathan Doerer had a 21-yard field goal in the second quarter. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

  09/18/21 - RB *Kyren WilliamsrSo/2022, Notre Dame, 5-09, 199 (DS#13 RB) + More +

No. 12 Notre Dame got big three big plays from two of its offensive captains and helped coach Brian Kelly match Knute Rockne for the most victories in program history. Kyren Williams scored two long touchdowns, the second a 51-yard run with 6:05 remaining, and Avery Davis scored on a 62-yard reception as the Fighting Irish beat Purdue improved to 3-0. Victory No. 105 for Kelly in his 12-year career at Notre Dame was also the 26th straight for the Irish at home.

The Fighting Irish won their eighth straight over Purdue and first since 2014. "It takes a lot of things to be in place for that to happen," said Kelly, whose first victory at Notre Dame was a 23-12 victory over Purdue at Notre Dame during the 2010 season. "Father John (Jenkins, the university president) and (athletic director) Jack (Swarbrick) have been on this journey. Consistency, leadership and alignment - all those things have to come together to get to this point." Williams, who scored on a fourth-and-3 pass play of 39 yards from Jack Coan early in the second quarter to give the Irish their first lead 7-3, finished with 86 yards on 11 carries and two receptions for 47 yards. Davis, who had five receptions for 120 yards in the game, had a field view of Williams' game-clinching TD run. "He's insane, his ability to maneuver, his strength to stay up," Davis said of Williams. "Just watching him for a second, I forgot I had to block for him. He's so entertaining." Williams finished with 91 yards on 12 carries, 47 yards on two receptions and added 30 yards on two punt returns. - Notre Dame Football/AP College Football

  07/30/21 - RB *Kyren WilliamsrSo/2022, Notre Dame, 5-09, 199 (DS#13 RB) + More +

On the door to his room back in St. Louis hangs a mirror Kyren Williams had to face, wanted to reckon with every morning before he'd confront whatever the world had for him that day. It was an integral part of the process that made a light-switch moment in the spring of 2020 stick, a quarantine revelation that the Notre Dame running back wasn't a transfer portal escapee waiting to happen but a player about to ascend with still no ceiling in sight. "It's all a mindset," Williams said in July, back in the flow of summer school and players-only-practices at Notre Dame. "It still is about that. My mindset has never changed since the end of the season last year. "It's always to be the best version of me each and every day. So when there's work to put in, I'll be able to make sure that my dreams come true.

"That's who I am. That's how I want to live my life. I feel like if I just keep doing that, that's going to lead me to where I want to be." Where Williams is heading into August training camp is a 5-foot-9, 195-pound junior coming off a rushing season (1,125 on 211 carries) 55 yards shy of one of the top 10 in school history. His 13 rushing touchdowns in 2020 were the most in a season by an Irish running back in the 2000s and four off the school record 17 shared by former All-Americans Allen Pinkett (1984) and Vagas Ferguson (1979). - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame running back Kyren Williams was selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award last season, so it was basically a given that he'd make the 2021 preseason watch list for the award that honors college football's top running back. That officially happened Wednesday with Williams joining 81 other running backs on the watch list. Williams was named ACC Rookie of the Year as a sophomore last season for accumulating 1,125 yards and 13 touchdowns on 211 carries and 313 yards and one touchdown on 35 catches. No Notre Dame running back has ever won the Doak Walker Award, which was created in 1990. Alabama running back Najee Harris won the award last season. - South Bend Tribune

An elite running back needs elite field vision. The ever-confident Kyren Williams believes he's already checked that box following his 2020 breakout season as Notre Dame's running back. "I have the best vision in college football," Williams said. "I've always had that vision." Since he was a child, Williams was told by his father that his natural field vision was impressive. Williams' confidence in that has only grown over the years. He wants to leave observers wondering how he saw what he saw. "My main goal as a running back is to leave people guessing and wondering how he was even able to make that cut," Williams said.

If the 5-foot-9, 185-pound Williams wants to make the leap to a truly elite running back in college football, Williams will need to make more of those cuts to produce explosive plays in the running game. With one of the best offensive lines in the country in front of him last year, Williams showed he was capable of breaking a long run. Twice he gained 65 yards on a single run: once against Florida State on Oct. 10 and again four weeks later with a touchdown run to start the victory over then-No. 1 Clemson. With two runs of 60-plus yards last season, Williams finished in a tie for seventh in the FBS in that category. - South Bend Tribune

EA Sports announced earlier this month that it plans to bring back its once-popular college football video game franchise. Notre Dame on Monday announced it plans to play hardball in support of its football players. There's a world where those two concepts can peacefully and mutual profitably co-exist, someday. It's just that the NCAA's chronic avoidance of defining the name/image/likeness (NIL) issue in college athletics has added layers of legalese and complications to a seismic shift in the amateur athletics model that was supposed to be implemented in time for the 2021-22 school year. Now there's no clear timeline. And state legislatures, Congress and the Supreme Court will ultimately likely dictate to the NCAA rather than suggest what the next steps are that need to be taken. EA Sports doesn't have a firm timeline either to release its rebranded EA Sports College Football video game, though EA Sports vice president and general manager Daryl Holt told ESPN it wouldn't happen in 2021. - Indianapolis Star/News

Given how reliable running back Kyren Williams was for Notre Dame football last season, it might be hard to remember that he was still in his freshman year of eligibility. A reminder came Monday when Williams was named to the 2020 Freshman All-America Team by the Football Writers Association of America. The 5-foot-9, 195-pound Williams became only the second offensive player from Notre Dame to make the team since its inception in 2001. Williams gave Notre Dame its second Freshman All-American in as many years following after safety Kyle Hamilton from the previous season. The Irish have now landed eight players on the Freshman All-America Team starting with offensive tackle Sam Young in 2006. Williams rushed 211 times for 1,125 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2020. He also caught 35 passes for 313 yards and one touchdown. - South Bend Tribune

Alabama is No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll for the first time this year, extending its record of consecutive seasons with at least one week on top of the rankings to 13. Notre Dame moved up two spots to No. 2 on Sunday after upsetting Clemson in a dramatic double-overtime game Saturday night. Ohio State remained No. 3. Clemson gave up the top spot for the first time this season and landed at No. 4. The Crimson Tide, who had an open date, received 59 of 62 first-place votes. Notre Dame, which has its best ranking since it was No. 1 at the end of the 2012 regular season, received two first-place votes. Ohio State got one. Texas A&M moved up two spots to No. 5, the Aggies’ best ranking since they finished fifth to end the 2012 season. Florida jumped two spots to No. 6 after beating Georgia to snap a three-game losing streak against its SEC East rival. The Bulldogs fell eight spots to a season-low 13th. - AP College Football

Kyren Williams had a 3-yard touchdown run in the second overtime and No. 4 Notre Dame shut down top-ranked Clemson with a couple of sacks to seal a 47-40 victory Saturday night, the Fighting Irish's first victory over a No. 1 in 27 years. Clemson had won 36 straight games and had not lost to an Atlantic Coast Conference team since 2017. The Fighting Irish (7-0, 6-0), playing in the ACC only because of the pandemic, snapped both streaks and sparked fans to storm the field in a celebration that most definitely did not meet the CDC's social-distancing guidelines.

After Williams gave Norte Dame the lead on the first possession of the second OT, the Irish pushed Clemson back with back-to-back sacks on DJ Uaigalelei by Adetokumbo Ogundeji and Daelin Hayes on the Tigers first two plays. The big freshman quarterback completed to passes after the second-and-39, but the final one was way short of the line to gain and a couple of laterals didn't help. The Fighting Irish have won 13 straight games, snapped an 11-game losing streak against top-five teams and beat a No. 1 for the first time since taking down Florida State in 1993 at Notre Dame Stadium. - AP College Football

Notre Dame spent the past couple of weeks prepping for the biggest game of the year. Now, it's here. Bring on Clemson! Kyren Williams ran for two touchdowns, Ian Book passed for another and No. 4 Notre Dame turned in a dominant defensive performance, stifling Georgia Tech 31-13 on Saturday. Next up for the Fighting Irish: a showdown against top-ranked Clemson in South Bend. Notre Dame (6-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won't have to face Trevor Lawrence, the star quarterback who will have to sit out the game after testing positive for COVID-19. Book completed 18 of 26 passes for 199 yards in another efficient performance. Williams shook off a fumble that Georgia Tech returned for a long touchdown, scoring on runs of 2 and 4 yards. He finished with 76 yards on 15 carries. Notre Dame had nine tackles behind the line, five sacks and two forced fumbles. Hayes was the standout, forcing both fumbles and coming up with his first two sacks of the season. Safety Kyle Hamilton contributed five tackles, two of them behind the line, and broke up a pass. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Kyren Williams ran for 185 yards and two touchdowns and safety Shaun Crawford helped thwart a potential Florida State rally with a goal-line interception in No. 5 Notre Dame's 42-26 victory Saturday night. Williams fumbled at his own 32 on the second play from scrimmage, then riddled Florida State the rest of the way, picking up 130 yards and both his TDs by halftime as the Fighting Irish (3-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) took a 35-20 lead. Ian Book completed 16 of 25 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 58 yards and another score.

With Notre Dame leading 42-26, the Seminoles (1-3, 0-3) drove 73 yards to the 5, but Crawford picked off Jordan Travis' pass with 8:21 left. Travis, making his first start for the Seminoles after shining in relief last week against Jacksonville State, was 13 of 24 for 204 yards and led Florida State in rushing with 96 yards on 19 keepers, even with a pair of sacks. He threw a TD pass and ran for a score. Florida State's Tamorrion Terry caught seven passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. Irish wideout Javon McKinley had five receptions for 107. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

Kyren Williams ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns in his first start, grad quarterback Ian Book threw for 263 yards and No. 10 Notre Dame beat Duke 27-13 on Saturday at rainy Notre Dame Stadium in the season and Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams. The speedy Williams, who saw limited action last season as a freshman, had 19 carries and also was Notre Dame's leading receiver with two receptions for 93 yards, one a 75-yarder in the first half. The victory was Notre Dame's 19th straight at home and the first for the Fighting Irish in a conference after 132 years as an independent. Because of COVID-19, the Irish are playing this season as a member of the ACC.

The school announced a crowd of 10,097, 90% of them students, attended the game in the 77,622-seat stadium where fans were wearing masks and socially distanced because of the pandemic. The triumph also came on a day when the school announced a four-year contract extension for coach Brian Kelly, who is now 9-2 in openers at Notre Dame. Book outdueled Duke grad quarterback Chase Brice, who threw for 259 yards on 20-of-37 passing and rushed for a touchdown in his debut for coach David Cutcliffe after transferring in from Clemson. Book, who rushed for 139 yards and passed for 181 yards and four touchdowns last season in Notre Dame's 38-7 victory at Duke, completed 19 of 31 passes, one a 17-yard TD pass to Avery Davis early in the fourth quarter that increased the Irish lead to 24-13. He rushed for just 12 yards on nine carries. - AP College/Notre Dame Football

Left alone to stew in the darkness of his abrupt free fall into an afterthought last fall, Kyren Williams doubled down on who he believed he could be in a Notre Dame uniform someday. In the weeks and months that followed, the now-Notre Dame sophomore running back even managed to exceed his own lofty expectations. On Tuesday during a Zoom conference call with the media, Irish head coach Brian Kelly let the college football world know just how much Williams had exceeded them. "Kyren Williams has really emerged as somebody we feel right now has gained an advantage as the top back right now," Kelly said of a player who had all of five touches as a freshman in 2019 and none after game 2 of that season. "He's going to require, obviously, some assistance at that position from a number of other guys. We're not just going to feature one back. But Kyren's done a great job."

Williams gives Notre Dame a better version of himself than the Irish saw at any time from him as an early enrollee, and an impressive one at that in the time leading up to the 2019 season. He had bulked up to 204 pounds after his senior season in high school, figuring he'd need the extra bulk to absorb the punishing blows from college defenders, and was pushing 210 on his 5-9 frame when he first met up with Stanfield in the spring. "He's in the 193-195 range now," Stanfield said. "But the biggest difference in who he was and who he is now is speed. Straight-line speed. He always had the agility to make people miss, but now he can run away from them, too." - South Bend Tribune
