Poised for a 2022 standout season: Defensive tackle Dante Stills is looking to mirror a 2021 season in which he was named to the All-Big 12 first team with seven sacks and 15 tackles for loss. Now entering his fifth season with West Virginia, defensive lineman and former Fairmont Senior standout Dante Stills knows he's the old man when it comes to the Mountaineer roster. And after 15 spring practices, even he admitted he was feeling as such. " It was practice nine or 10 you really start to feel it on your body," Stills said after Saturday's Gold-Blue Game. "Your hands, your fingers start to hurt - your feet, your knees … I feel old, but I'm not." Perhaps not in terms of his age, but from the perspective of playing experience, Stills is about as old as a college football player can be. A freshman All-American according to The Athletic and ESPN.com all the way back in 2018, Stills has been a constant contributor to the WVU defense in each of his four seasons. But after mulling over leaving to enter the NFL Draft, Stills saw enough holes in his game via film to realize that he needed to return. Some of what he saw boiled down solely to effort. Lack of consistency also stuck out to him. He reiterated that those were the targets when it came to his spring work. "What I wanted to work on was consistency running to the ball," Stills said. "There were plays last year where if I saw the ball across the field, for some reason I didn't try to go get him and show some effort. So, that was my main thing this year was to run to the ball, be around the ball. That was my thing." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

West Virginia defensive lineman Dante Stills is forever fighting mistaken perceptions, not to mention identify. In 2021, even after being part of a squad that led the nation in pass defense a year prior, he still hears questions from some media members a bout the supposed defensive shortcomings of the Big 12. "I tell people that all the time," he said of the fact that teams in the Big 12 have good defenses, albeit ones that are often overshadowed by some spectacular offensive play. "There may be times wh en you see the offense put up 50 points, but the defense can still be really good. I think the defensive side of the ball has some dogs, but they're going up against tempo and fast pace. Every team has good offensive linemen for sure. The offenses are so explosive, that takes away from some of (the attention) the defenses should get. Our defense last year was top five in the country, but I don't think we got the notoriety we deserved. I feel like we should have been in the conversation more." - Charlest on Gazette-Mail

The Stills brothers are only one year apart age-wise. So, since Darius declared for the upcoming 2021 NFL draft, Dante wanted to join him. The Stills brothers are just that close. The problem was Darius' 2020 resume was much more impressive than Dante's. The 6-foot-1, 279-pound senior finished the season with 12 solo tackles and 13 assists for a total of 25 stops. Stills had 7.5 tackles for loss including 3.5 sacks totaling 22 yards in losses and actually intercepted a pass. That led to the elder Stills being voted Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-American. That's why he is NFL-bound while younger brother Dante is still suited up in blue and gold."Throughout the season I wasn't performing at the level I thought I would," sa id the younger Stills, showing uncommon self-awareness. "People thought I did good, but my stats weren't showing it. Which that is kind of a big deal. I mean, stats are how much you are doing throughout the year." The handwriting was on the wall. Darius needed to step up while Dante needed to stay put. "I just feel I didn't do as much as I needed to do," said the younger Stills, "to be at that level that Darius was at. That's kind of just how I thought. I was like, it's best for me to stay another year. And work and work and work, so I'm able to be at that level next year." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

In a way, Dante Stills didn't think he'd be playing at West Virginia this year, his senior season. He envisioned himself as a player who might be able to join brother Darius in the NFL draft this season, but there are dreamers and there are realists and, it turned out, the West Virginia defensive tackle was more realist than dreamer. "My main goal coming into my junior year was I want to leave, I want to be a three-year guy," Dante Stills admitted. "But throughout the year I wasn't performing at the lev el I thought I should have been. I did good, but my stats weren't showing it. Stats show how much you are doing throughout the year and I didn't feel I did as much as I needed to do to be at the level Darius is at."I thought it was best for me to stay another year and work and work and work so I am able to be at that level next year." Stills had a decent year, but he wasn't the dominant player he wanted to be or that you have to be if you are to make a dent on draft day, so after playing with Dan te for three years at Fairmont Senior and three years at West Virginia - separated only the year Dante graduated and came to WVU - the two older sons of former Mountaineer star pass rusher Gary Stills will be apart. "He's here right now, but once he leav es it's going to be different," Dante Stills admitted. "I'm so used to living with him my whole life. I know he knows it's a business, a job. He knows I'm going to handle my business and I know he will, too." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

By getting planted firmly in the starting lineup, Stills, son of former WVU great Gary Stills, should have even more opportunities to make big plays on the WVU defensive line. The key for him is to make the most of those opportunities. He faded a little down the stretch, recording six sacks in his first eight games and earning just one sack in his last four. He'll need to improve on his consistency as a junior, but he still more than doubled his sack total between his freshman and sophomore seasons. He' ll also be called upon to assume a veteran's role. Until now, that job was Donahue's. If the depth chart shapes up as some anticipate and freshman Jalen Thornton becomes the No. 2 defensive tackle, it will be Stills helping build up the next generation a t that position. As good as Stills and the rest of the defensive linemen have been, they can still help WVU defense as a whole become better. West Virginia finished a pedestrian 69th in the Football Bowl Subdivision in allowing 159.4 rushing yards per game. It was 72nd in opponents' third-down conversions, allowing first downs 39.9 percent of the time. Stills will get his chances to help improve those numbers. If WVU does improve, the spotlight on Stills will only shine brighter. - Charleston Gaze tte-Mail

2019 ALL-BIG 12 FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM (COACHES): DL Dante Stills, West Virginia,...The Stills brothers, Darius and Dante, were probably the most disruptive brother tandem this conference has seen since the Selmon brothers terrorized Big 8 teams in the mid -1970s at Oklahoma. Dante, a sophomore, was equally impactful this season with seven sacks, 11 1/2 tackles for losses and 24 tackles in 12 games. The Mountaineers finished second in the Big 12 and 27th nationally with 33 sacks. Darius and Dante will be t he cornerstones of West Virginia's 2020 defense, and both should garner All-America consideration next summer. - West Virginia Football
