Arizona State junior linebacker Merlin Robertson has been named to the watch list for the Dick Butkus Award which goes annually to the nation's top linebacker. It is the 37th year of the award and includes the selection of a high school recipient as well. Each watch list contains 51 linebackers, mirroring the legendary "51" pro jersey associated with the Award's namesake Dick Butkus, who was recognized by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history.

The field will be narrowed to semifinalists on Nov. 1, with finalists named Nov. 22, and winners on or before Dec. 7. Appearing on the watch list is not a requirement to win the award. Robertson, a 6-foot-3, 250-pounder, has started all but one game since arriving in Tempe as a freshman in 2018. He was the Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year as a rookie. Robertson has played in 29 games in his Sun Devil career and has recorded 173 tackles, 94 of those solo. He also has seven sacks, three interceptions, seven passes defended, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. - Arizona Republic

Merlin Robertson is back: He was the Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2018 but had a tough sophomore season, although his play did pick up in the last couple of games. With the media unable to watch practices it was tough to gauge where Robertson was heading into the season although coaches and teammates praised his off-season preparations. That showed on Saturday. A leaner, more fit Robertson had an acrobatic interception in the second quarter and stopped a USC ball call carrier on a fourth and 1 at the ASU 6, finishing with 10 tackles, the interception and a fumble recovery. - Arizona Republic

Arizona State has named Marvin Lewis and Antonio Pierce as co-defensive coordinators. Head coach Herm Edwards made the announcement on Tuesday. Lewis, a coaching veteran of 25 years in the NFL, joined the program in 2019 as a special adviser and served as interim defensive backs coach in the 2019 Sun Bowl. He spent 16 seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals head coach, setting team records with 131 wins, seven playoff appearances and four division titles. A former Pro Bowl and Super Bowl-winning linebacker, Pierce was recently promoted to associate head coach after spending his first two seasons as Arizona State's linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator. He will retain both titles. Pierce played nine NFL seasons with Washington and the New York Giants, winning a Super Bowl with the Giants in 2007. - AP College Football
