  11/21/20 - RB *Javian HawkinsrSo/2021, Louisville, 5-08, 183 (DS#12 RB) + More +

Javian Hawkins leaves Louisville with records within reach and plenty of life in his legs. Which, come to think of it, is a good reason to go. U of L's prolific running back has picked a relatively sweet spot to opt out of his remaining eligibility to prepare for the NFL Draft. He has established his credentials as a breakaway threat without incurring any status-threatening injuries, showing the scouts what they need to see while avoiding risks that could prove ruinous to his professional prospects. Much as his decision will disappoint Cardinals fans and could compromise U of L's chances in its three remaining games, Hawkins probably ought to cash in while he can. Because of the bumps ballcarriers accumulate (and the diminished speed that often results), the career of the average NFL running back lasts about 2 ½ seasons. Unlike players at some other positions, and much like new cars, they are viewed as depreciating, fungible assets.

"Everybody always talks about the shelf life of running backs; how many hits can they take?" U of L coach Scott Satterfield said Monday. "Maybe that goes through running backs' minds, the fact that you only have so many hits...I think that's probably part of the decision for (Hawkins)." Though Clemson's Travis Etienne is the only running back commonly projected as a first-round selection in 2021, no fewer than seven lower-rated backs have chosen to opt out this fall. Some of them may choose to return to campus for the 2021 season. Some of them won't get a sniff from the NFL. All of them are conscious, though, of the accumulated pounding their position entails and, presumably, mindful of the value of self-preservation. Hawkins is one who deserves a closer look. Small by NFL standards - U of L lists him at 5-foot-9, 196 pounds - he projects as a change-of-pace back with elite elusiveness at the next level. Despite missing Saturday's game at Virginia, Hawkins' 822 rushing yards rank seventh in the Football Bowl Subdivision with a healthy 6.2 yards per carry average. - Courier Journal

Javian Hawkins earned the nickname "PlayStation" when he played Pop Warner football as a kid in Brevard County. On Saturday, he hit the "o" button and gave the Louisville Cardinals a huge advantage in a 48-16 win over the Florida State Seminoles. Hawkins, who starred at Astronaut High and Cocoa High, scored two of his three touchdowns in the first quarter for Louisville as the Cardinals jumped out to a big lead. First, the sophomore tailback scored on a 9-yard run, helping U of L tie the game at 7. But it was his second run that gave the Cardinals huge momentum, and made the game's highlight reel. Starting right, Hawkins was bottled up, but he spun back and headed left, and his speed carried him the rest of the way for a 70-yard touchdown. Hawkins added a third touchdown in the third quarter - a 10-yard scoring run. Hawkins left the 100-yard mark behind in the second quarter. He now has 11 100-yard games in his young Louisville career, good enough for fourth in school history. He finished with 176 yards on 16 carries, averaging 10.8 yards per carry. - Courier Journal

Javian Hawkins ran for a season-best 174 yards and a career-high three touchdowns for Louisville, which snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday by beating Florida State 48-16. The Cardinals (2-4, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) took advantage of a yielding Seminoles defense to amass 410 yards of its 569 total yards in the first half. Five plays went for at least 35 yards in the half, helping the Cardinals take a 31-14 halftime lead. Jordan Travis, who transferred from Louisville two seasons ago, recovered his fumble after a botched handoff and ran it in 15 yards to give the Seminoles (2-4, 1-4) a 7-0 lead just 2:30 into the game. But Louisville responded quickly, needing just 2:01 to tie it on a 9-yard run by Hawkins, one of his 16 carries on the day.

That was the start of 28 straight points for Louisville, which never looked back. After the Cardinals defense forced a three-and-out on Florida State's ensuing drive, Hawkins gave Louisville the lead for good on a 70-yard scoring run on the Cardinals next play. Malik Cunningham completed 16 of 24 passes for 278 yards and two scores in the victory. Tutu Atwell caught three passes for 129 yards, including a 66-yard scoring strike from Cunningham, and added a 2-yard rushing touchdown. Despite racking up a season-best 265 yards rushing, the Seminoles offense could not match the Cardinals. Travis finished completing just 14-of-32 passes for 141 yards with a touchdown and an interception before being pulled midway through the fourth quarter. - Louisville/AP College Football

  10/22/20 - RB *Javian HawkinsrSo/2021, Louisville, 5-08, 183 (DS#12 RB) + More +

Louisville football left its loss to Notre Dame a bit banged up Saturday. Running back and kick returner Hassan Hall injured his shoulder in the 12-7 loss. He went down on a kick return attempt in the first half and did not return. Coach Scott Satterfield said he is listed as day-to-day. Also listed as day-to-day is defensive end Yaya Diaby. Diaby was seen limping off the field in the first half and did not return to the game. Neither Hall nor Diaby practiced on Sunday and will continue to be evaluated. The loss of Hall and Diaby could have an impact on the Cardinals against Florida State this Saturday. Hall is Louisville's backup running back, paired with starter Javian Hawkins. Hall has 111 yards on 26 carries and is averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Without Hall, Hawkins will carry the load again in the backfield. That isn't something new for Hawkins, who is fourth nationally with 519 rushing yards. Since taking over the lead role last season, he has had 20 or more attempts eight times, and his production hasn't faltered. He's capable of being a workhorse for Louisville. - Courier Journal

  07/31/20 - RB *Javian HawkinsrSo/2021, Louisville, 5-08, 183 (DS#12 RB) + More +

Hawkins busted onto the scene last year and was one of the best running backs not just in the ACC, but the country. He earned All-ACC second team honors, ranked seventh in the nation in rushing, broke the school mark for rushing yards by a running back and set a new Louisville mark for the most rushing yards in a season by a freshman with 1,525 yards. The redshirt-freshman was fairly consistent throughout the season, as well. He scored nine touchdowns, averaged 117.31 yards per game and tallied eight 100-yard games. His best game of the season was 233 yards and one touchdown against Syracuse. Hawkins will be getting plenty of touches, once again, this season with a chance to put together an even better season. - Courier Journal

Javian Hawkins is the big reason why the Cardinals rank 23rd nationally averaging 214.1 yards rushing per game. He set a freshman school record running for 1,420 yards as the Cardinals' first 1,000-yard back since Bilal Powell (1,405) in 2010. Hawkins has six 100-yard rushing games this season, including 233 yards in a win over Syracuse, and already is being mentioned as a Heisman Trophy candidate for 2020. "He's had a special year, no question about it, particularly for a freshman a really special year," Satterfield said. "Overall, I'm praying for just any running back to have a special year, and we've leaned on that." - AP College Football

2019 ALL-ACC SECOND TEAM (COACHES): RB - Javian Hawkins, Louisville; 103,...Hawkins, who only played four games in 2018, broke records in his first full season with the Cardinals. Rushing for a UofL freshman record of 1,420 yards and eight touchdowns, Hawkins averaged 118.3 yards per game. His 1,420 yards rushing ranks fourth on the school's single-season list and stands third in league history among freshmen. He became the first 1,000-yard rusher since Lamar Jackson's 2017 season, but was the first running back at UofL to accomplish the feat since Bilal Powell ran for 1,405 yards in 2010. After 12 games, Hawkins ranks seventh in the country in rushing yards and first among freshmen nationally. The 5-foot-9 running back is second in the league in rushing yards, just 265 behind Boston College's A.J. Dillon, who has rushed for 1,685 yards. - Louisville Football

Blanton Creque's 41-yard field goal with 1:02 remaining edged Louisville past Boston College for a wild 41-39 victory on Saturday that ended a nine-game Atlantic Coast Conference losing streak. Shortly after Aaron Boumerhi's 45-yard field goal with 3:32 left put the Eagles ahead 39-38, the Cardinals (3-2, 1-1) drove 52 yards in eight plays for Creque's line drive that sailed through the uprights. BC (3-3, 1-2) drove to its 42 before turning the ball over on downs with two seconds left, sparking a celebration as Louisville emerged from the shootout with its first conference win since beating Syracuse in November 2017.

The schools combined for 1,227 yards, most of it passing in a contest that matched the ACC's top two rushing attacks. Louisville gained the edge 664-563, helped by those final yards ending with Creque's second field goal. Cardinals freshman Evan Conley completed 10 of 16 passes for 140 yards and a 23-yard TD to Dez Fitzpatrick for 38-29 lead early in the fourth quarter. He alternated with Micale Cunningham, who was 13 of 18 passing for 288 yards and 59-yard TD. Javian Hawkins rushed for a career-high 172 yards on 25 carries for the Cardinals. - Louisville/AP College Football
