  01/30/23 - QB Stetson BennettrSr/2023, Georgia, 5-11, 192 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Former Georgia football quarterback Stetson Bennett was arrested on a public intoxication charge Sunday morning in Texas where he's training for Indianapolis Combine workout (Feb. 27-March 4). FYI, drinking is not one of the events at the Combine. Dallas Police responded at about 6:10 a.m. to reports of a man banging on doors in the 1600 block of Tribeca Way, according to information provided to the Athens Banner-Herald by the department's public information office.

When officers arrived, they located the 25-year old Bennett, the two-time national championship starting quarterback for the Bulldogs, and "determined he was intoxicated," police said. Bennett reportedly turned down a chance to play in the Senior Bowl this week in Mobile Ala. NFL Draft Scout rates the undersized Bennett (5-11, 194) No. 199, in area of rounds 5-6. - Athens Daily Banner

  01/23/23 - QB Stetson BennettrSr/2023, Georgia, 5-11, 192 (DS#8 QB) + More +

After Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett won the Manning Award Monday he was more judicious in his remarks than after winning his second consecutive national championship game. It was a fitting honor for the Georgia sixth-year senior who won MVP awards for all four of the College Football Playoff games in which he played the last two seasons. Now in its 19th year, the Manning is the only quarterback award that takes into account candidates' bowl and playoff performances. It honors the accomplishments of Archie and his sons Peyton and Eli.

Bennett was fourth in Heisman voting and considered an NFL longshot at 5-11, 190; rated 199 overall by NFL Draft Scout, in rounds 5-6..."People are going to have their opinions," he said. "My job is to go out there and play football, to get the ball in athletes' hands and do it consistently and play hard and play to win. People can say whatever, I hear it, but I don't really let it bother me." Some think he snubbed fans in the aftermath of his last win. "It was nuts," he said. "Them hating me, me hating them, us falling in love together and coming back, playing football, I mean, it was special. I wouldn't change a single thing. I don't think I'd be here without it being that way. I just hope that everybody who was there and everybody who was with me and everybody I was with knows I appreciate the heck out of it - everything." - Frank Cooney, NFL Draft Scout

  01/09/23 - QB Stetson BennettrSr/2023, Georgia, 5-11, 192 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Stetson Bennett threw two touchdown passes and ran for two scores in the first half as No. 1 Georgia demolished No. 3 TCU 65-7 Monday night to become the first team to win consecutive College Football Playoff national championships. The Bulldogs (15-0) became the first repeat champs since Alabama went back-to-back a decade ago and left no doubt that they have replaced the Crimson Tide as the new bullies on the block. TCU (13-2), the first Cinderella team of the playoff era, never had a chance against the Georgia juggernaut. Unlike Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal, the Bulldogs would not succumb to the Hypnotoads' spell. Georgia turned in one of the all-time beatdowns in a game that decided a national title, reminiscent of Nebraska running over Florida by 38 in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl, USC's 36-point rout of Oklahoma in the 2005 Orange Bowl and Alabama's 28-point BCS championship blowout over Notre Dame in 2013.

But this was worse. Too much talent. Too well-coached. Two straight titles for coach Kirby Smart's 'Dawgs. No team has ever scored more points in a national championship game, dating to the beginning of the BCS in 1998. With 13:25 left in the fourth quarter, coach Kirby Smart called timeout in the middle of an offensive drive so Bennett could exit to hero's ovation in the final game of his circuitous college career. He finished 18 for 25 for 304 yards and four touchdown passes. Georgia offensive linemen were snacking on chicken wings on the sideline as the game wound down. Smart is now 81-15 in his first seven seasons at Georgia with two national titles. His mentor, Alabama coach Nick Saban, was 79-15 with three titles in his first seven seasons with the Tide. - Georgia/AP College Football

  01/09/23 - QB Stetson BennettrSr/2023, Georgia, 5-11, 192 (DS#8 QB) + More +

To a certain extent, it's only fitting that the nearly unimaginable story arc of Stetson Bennett's college football career will conclude some 15 miles from the famed Hollywood sign. Bennett was a bit player as a true freshman walk-on quarterback the last time Georgia came to Southern California for its Rose Bowl game with Oklahoma in the 2017 national semifinals. Now, here he is once again as probably the biggest star on college football's biggest stage-the national championship game against TCU Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET in SoFi Stadium where Bennett will try to lead his team to a second straight national title.

All of which would have seemed preposterous for John Seter back then if someone had told him how this would all have played out. He wouldn't have believed it. "No, in the nicest way," Seter, a scout team quarterback for Georgia back then like Bennett who remains good friends with him, said Friday night by phone. "Yeah, he knew that at the time, too, right then and there. He grew a lot. He continues to grow and he understands that, and I still think he's got a ton more to show." Back in 2017, Bennett famously gave Georgia's defense fits playing the role of Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield in practice in bowl prep. Now, Bennett Monday will be playing in the same stadium that Mayfield now calls home for the Los Angeles Rams. - Athens Daily Banner

Georgia QB Stetson Bennett has accounted for 31 touchdowns and was the school's first Heisman Trophy finalist since 1992. He is 177 yards shy of 4,000 yards passing this season and threw two fourth-quarter TD passes to lead the Bulldogs to a comeback win in the Peach Bowl semifinal against No. 4 Ohio State.   12/31/22 - QB Stetson BennettrSr/2023, Georgia, 5-11, 192 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Stetson Bennett capped No. 1 Georgia's comeback from a two-touchdown, fourth-quarter deficit with a 10-yard, last-minute scoring pass to Adonai Mitchell in a 42-41 victory over No. 4 Ohio State for a shot at its second straight national title. The comeback in the College Football Playoff Peach Bowl semifinal held just after midnight Sunday when Noah Ruggles' 50-yard field goal attempt for Ohio State with three seconds remaining sailed wide left, setting off a celebration on the Georgia sideline. Georgia (14-0) will play No. 3 TCU, which beat No. 2 Michigan 51-45 in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal, on Jan. 9 for the national championship. The Bulldogs, who won their first national title since 1980 last season, will play for the first back-to-back championships in school history.

C.J. Stroud threw four touchdown passes for Ohio State (11-2), which led 38-24 in the fourth quarter. Bennett's 76-yard scoring pass to Arian Smith, followed by Bennett's pass to Ladd McConkey on the 2-point play, cut it to 38-35. Following Bennett's go-ahead scoring pass to Mitchell with 54 seconds remaining, Stroud led the Buckeyes back with a 27-yard run to the Georgia 31. The missed field goal set off the Georgia celebration that left Bennett in tears. Ruggles' 48-yard field goal gave the Buckeyes a 41-35 lead, leaving only 2:36 for Bennett and Georgia's offense. Stroud completed 23 of 34 passes for 348 yards without an interception. Stroud capped the Buckeyes' first possession of the second half with a 10-yard scoring pass to Emeka Egbuka for a 35-24 lead - already the most points allowed in a full game by the Bulldogs this season. Marvin Harrison Jr. had five catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Egbuka had eight catches for 112 yards and one score. - Georgia/AP College Football

2022 BURLSWORTH TROPHY WINNER: Monday, Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett was named the thirteenth winner of the Burlsworth Trophy at a ceremony held at Crystal Bridges Museum. The award is given to the nation's most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on. On hand to make the announcement was Marty Burlsworth, Chairman and CEO of the Burlsworth Trophy. Bennett keeps adding memorable chapters to a storybook Bulldogs career. After earning MVP honors in the CFP Championship game win against Alabama last season, Bennett is having another banner season in his final year in Athens as the Bulldogs make another run at a CFP title. He ranks No. 11 nationally in passing yards (3,425) and was the Walter Camp Player of the Week after a Week 1 victory against then-No. 11 Oregon. He was also named the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week for torching the Ducks with a career-high 368 yards on 25-of-31 passing with two touchdowns and added a rushing TD.

In a showdown with then-No. 1 Tennessee, Bennett was 17-of-25 for 257 yards passing and two touchdowns and added a 13-yard rushing TD to help the Bulldogs to a 27-13 win over their SEC East foe. His 64-yard run against Auburn earlier this fall was the longest by a Bulldog QB since Ray Goff rambled 73 yards against Clemson in 1976. Stetson is included among the Top 10 candidates for the 2022 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. In 2021, he started 12 of the 14 games and came up big during Georgia’s CFP run. Bennett was the Offensive MVP of the Capital One Orange Bowl after completing 20-of-30 passes with three TDs in the win over Michigan. He then completed 17-of-26 passes for 224 yards and two TDs in the CFP Championship Game win over the Crimson Tide. - Burlsworth Trophy

2022 HEISMAN TROPHY FINALIST: QB Stetson Bennett, Georgia,...Bennett, a 25-year-old sixth-year senior, has led top-ranked and defending national champion Georgia to an undefeated record as the Bulldogs have been perched at the top of the polls for most of the season. Bennett has thrown for 3,425 yards with 20 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2022 and has a 26-3 record as a starting quarterback.   With all sorts of turmoil behind them in the rankings, the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs left no doubt about the top team heading into the College Football Playoff, dismantling No. 11 LSU 50-30 in the Southeastern Conference championship game Saturday. Stetson Bennett's threw a season-high four touchdown passes in another stellar postseason performance, while Christopher Smith gave the Bulldogs an early spark with a heads-up play that turned a seemingly harmless blocked field goal into a 96-yard TD. Not that any fortuitous breaks were needed, but Georgia (13-0, No. 1 CFP) caught a big one when a deflected pass bounced off an LSU receiver's helmet and wound up being picked off by the Bulldogs, setting up a score that contributed to a 35-10 lead by halftime. LSU's hopes of denying the reigning national champs their first SEC title since 2017 were further dampened by quarterback Jayden Daniels re-injuring a sore right ankle late in the first half. Not that backup Garrett Nussmeier played poorly, guiding the Tigers (9-4, No. 14 CFP) to three second-half touchdowns. It wasn't nearly enough.

Georgia heads into the playoff assured of a return trip to Atlanta for a de facto semifinal home game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, just 75 miles from its Athens campus. The Bulldogs have already played twice this season at the futuristic stadium, routing Oregon in the season opener and cruising past the the Tigers before a predominantly red-and-black crowd. LSU's outside hopes of crashing the four-team playoff field were wiped out a week ago by a stunning loss at Texas A&M, one of several upsets that will give the selection committee plenty to think about before its announcement Sunday. Tennessee and Clemson also ruined their playoff hopes with losses late in the regular season, while No. 4 Southern California is presumably out after getting blown out by Utah in the Pac-12 title game Friday. Just as the SEC game was kicking off, No. 3 TCU lost to Kansas State in overtime for the Big 12 championship, further clouding a playoff picture that suddenly looks much more favorable for No. 5 Ohio State and No. 6 Alabama. No matter who makes the elite field, Georgia is firmly focused on becoming the first repeat national title since Alabama in 2011-12, having won all but one game this season by double-digit margins. - Georgia/AP College Football

Stetson Bennett threw two touchdown passes and No. 1 Georgia completed back-to-back undefeated regular seasons for the first time in school history by overcoming a slow start to beat Georgia Tech 37-14 on Saturday. Georgia (12-0, No. 1 CFP) was down 7-0 early and led Georgia Tech only 10-7 at halftime. Then the Bulldogs overpowered the Yellow Jackets (5-7) with their running game to score 37 unanswered points and notch their fifth consecutive win in the state rivalry. Kenny McIntosh and Kendall Milton ran for touchdowns. Georgia outrushed Georgia Tech 264-40. The defending national champion Bulldogs are in good position to retain their No. 1 College Football Playoff ranking entering next week's Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 6 LSU. Mistakes in the third quarter hurt the Yellow Jackets' chance at spoiling the Bulldogs' history-making day. Following a low snap, punter David Shanahan was tackled at the Georgia Tech 17. That set up Bennett's second scoring pass, a 1-yarder to tight end Brock Bowers on a fourth-down play.

Georgia Tech freshman running back Jamie Felix's fumble was recovered by Georgia's Robert Beal on the Yellow Jackets' next play. The turnover set up a 36-yard field goal by Jack Podlesny to give the Bulldogs a 23-7 lead. Georgia pulled away in the fourth quarter. Bennett's 83-yard pass to McIntosh - the Bulldogs' longest pass of the season - set up McIntosh's 2-yard scoring run. Milton added a 44-yard scoring run. The Yellow Jackets ended the Bulldogs' string of 37 consecutive points on running back Dontae Smith's 24-yard scoring pass to Malachi Carter with less than 3 minutes remaining. Georgia Tech became the first team to score a first-quarter touchdown against Georgia this season. Zach Gibson completed a 34-yard pass to Nate McCollum on a fourth and 9 play to the Georgia 7. Backup quarterback Taisun Phommachanh's 7-yard scoring run capped the touchdown drive. The Bulldogs took a 10-7 lead on Bennett's 5-yard scoring pass to Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the second quarter. It was Georgia's only pass of a drive that included a 45-yard run by McIntosh. Georgia Tech finished 4-4 under interim coach Brent Key and fell short in its bid to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2018. - Georgia/AP College Football

No. 1 Georgia led an unchanged top five in The Associated Press college football poll Sunday, while the rest of the Top 25 was shuffled after eight ranked teams lost - including two big upsets in the Pac-12. For the second straight week, the Bulldogs received all but one of the 63 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. No. 2 Ohio State received the other first-place vote. No. 3 Michigan, No. 4 TCU and No. 5 Tennessee held their spots after victories Saturday, with only the Horned Frogs facing a real challenge.

Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and Tennessee won by a combined 203-60 against conference opponents. Home losses by Oregon (to Washington) and UCLA (to Arizona) shook up the rest of the top 10. No. 6 LSU and No. 7 Southern California each moved up a spot. The last time two top-10 Pac-12 teams lost at home during the same weekend was Oct. 2-4, 2014, when No. 2 Oregon fell 31-24 to Arizona 31-24 and No. 8 UCLA was defeated 30-28 by Utah. Alabama jumped two spots to No. 8 after it fell to a season-low No. 10 last week. Clemson moved up four spots to re-enter the top- 0 at No. 8 and Utah climbed to No .10. - AP College Football

Stetson Bennett threw for three touchdowns and No. 1 Georgia overcame a first-half surge by Mississippi State for a 38-19 victory on Saturday night. With the victory, the East Division champion Bulldogs secured a spot in the SEC Championship game. Georgia will face SEC West champ LSU in Atlanta on Dec. 3. It was a dominating effort by the Bulldogs (10-0, 7-0 SEC, No. 1 CFP), who put up 468 yards of offense. Bennett led the way, going 25 for 37 for 289 yards with two interceptions. Georgia also rushed for 179 yards. MSU (6-4, 3-4) struggled to consistently produce against Georgia on the offensive side. Will Rogers went 29 for 51 and threw for 263 yards and a touchdown. Mississippi State rushed for just 47 yards on 15 carries. Rufus Harvey led MSU with six catches for 66 yards and a score.

Georgia turned the football over twice on interceptions by Bennett and had another near-turnover in the red zone in the first half when a fumble was nullified after the play was blown dead. Despite those turnovers, UGA dominated and used a big second half by receiver Ladd McConkey, who ran 70 yards for a touchdown and finished with five catches for 71 yards and another score. McConkey's first TD on a 70-yard run started off the second half after Mississippi State had closed within 17-12 at the half. UGA had a 17-3 lead in the second quarter before MSU cut its deficit on a 66-yard punt return by Zavion Thomas in the final seconds of the period. - AP College Football

Stetson Bennett threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score and No. 1 Georgia shut down No. 2 Tennessee's high-powered offense, dominating the Volunteers 27-13 on Saturday in an SEC showdown of the nation's top-ranked teams. Georgia (9-0, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) turned the 25th regular-season matchup of the top two teams in the AP poll into rout that made clear the defending national champions are still the team to beat. In a deafening and soggy Sanford Stadium, Georgia led 27-6 before Tennessee scored its first touchdown with 4:15 remaining. Hendon Hooker, who entered as the Heisman Trophy frontrunner after taking down Alabama last month, passed for only 195 yards for Tennessee (8-1, 4-1) and was sacked six times by star defensive tackle Jalen Carter and the Bulldogs' defense.

Hooker threw an interception, lost a fumble that nearly resulted in a safety for Georgia and didn't throw a touchdown pass. Tennessee's final possession ended with Hooker dropped for no gain on a fourth-down run with less than 3 minutes remaining. The Volunteers came in averaging almost 50 points per game. The Volunteers road that Alabama victory to the top spot in the first College Football Playoff ranking. Georgia was No. 3 in those. That will change Tuesday. The Bulldogs also took control of the SEC's East Division in the race. They should cruise to another conference championship game. Hooker and his potent top receivers, Hyatt and Cedric Tillman, were contained by Georgia. The Vols were held to two first-half field goals as Georgia took a 24-6 halftime lead. Rain in the second half made it only more difficult to move against the Bulldogs' defense. Bennett threw scoring passes of 37 yards to Ladd McConkey and 5 yards to Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the first half. Bennett also had a 13-yard scoring run. There were more big plays in Georgia's passing game. Bennett had completions of 52 yards to Arian Smith and 49 yards to running back Kenny McIntosh. - Georgia/AP College Football

Stetson Bennett grimaced when told the news. The Atlanta Braves were knocked out of the Major League Baseball playoffs Saturday. After No. 1 Georgia romped to a 55-0 victory over Vanderbilt, the Bulldogs' veteran quarterback pointed to his favorite baseball team - the reigning World Series champions - as an example of how fleeting a title can be. "Are we gonna cash our chips in after so-and-so games, or are we gonna keep going, keep going, and know this isn't over until its over?" asked Bennett, whose team is seeking its second straight national championship. Unlike the Braves, the Bulldogs are still on track. Bennett threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns - his first scoring passes in nearly a month - and Georgia stamped its return to the No. 1 ranking with a blowout of the lowly Commodores.

Georgia (7-0, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) led 28-0 at halftime and shook off three straight weeks of rather lackluster performances. Those games provided a valuable lesson in what it takes to repeat as a champion. "It's tough," Bennett said. "We are not King Kong standing atop the Empire State Building. We've gotta work and execute each week, go out there and expect a dog fight until it's not one." Bennett was nearly perfect in the first half, completing 18 of 20 for 211 yards. Darnell Washington, the 6-foot-7 tight end who usually plays a supporting role to Brock Bowers, came up big with four catches for 78 yards, including a one-handed dazzler. "It's like throwing to the Pacific Ocean," Bennett quipped. Bennett hooked up with Kenny McIntosh on an 11-yard scoring play - the quarterback's first TD pass in four weeks - and followed with a 10-yard scoring toss to Dominick Blaylock. "It was good to get in the end zone," Bennett said. "But it was better to score 55." - Georgia/AP College Football

Stetson Bennett went 16 for 23 for 284 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score as No. 1 Georgia beat South Carolina 48-7 on Saturday. The Bulldogs (3-0) nearly had a second shutout of the season in their Southeastern Conference opener, but the backups allowed a touchdown pass with 53 seconds to go. Georgia has allowed just 10 points this season and the garbage-time score was the first offensive touchdown it gave up in its past five regular-season games. South Carolina (1-2) started 0-2 in the SEC for the fourth straight year.

The Georgia offense scored on eight of its first nine drives, gaining 551 yards and averaging nearly 10 yards a play before putting in the backups in the fourth quarter. Tight end Brock Bowers had five catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a score. Georgia let 10 players carry the ball, rushing for 212 yards. Bennett didn't play the final 23 minutes of the game. The Bulldogs' defensive line overwhelmed by South Carolina's front. A defender was in quarterback Spencer Rattler's face almost every time he dropped back more than three steps. The Oklahoma transfer got off just three deep balls, with two of them intercepted. He didn't play in the fourth quarter and was 13 of 25 for 118 yards. - Georgia/AP College Football

A shutout win wasn't enough for a No. 2 Georgia coming off its impressive opener when it scored touchdowns on its first seven offensive possessions. The reigning national champions fell short of that lofty standard against FCS Samford. Stetson Bennett still passed for 300 yards while throwing and running for touchdowns and No. 2 Georgia's rebuilt defense delivered another dominant performance in the Bulldogs' 33-0 win on Saturday. One week after giving up only a field goal in a 49-3 rout of then-No. 11 Oregon, Georgia (2-0) held Samford (1-1) to 128 yards and three first downs.

The offense, however, settled for four field goals — including on its first two possessions after moving the ball inside Samford's 10. "We didn't score touchdowns," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. "... You come off a week like Oregon where every opportunity to score a touchdown, we score a touchdown. And then we take a huge step back and have to kick field goals. Good teams, you can't do that. You have to be able to execute well...We have to do a better job." Bennett completed 24 of 34 passes, including a 3-yard scoring pass to freshman Dillon Bell. Even so, he wasn't satisfied. "I think we're all upset we didn't execute as well as we could have in the first half," Bennett said, adding "Too many field goals." - Georgia/AP College Football

Georgia moved up to No. 2 in the first Associated Press college football poll of the regular season, passing Ohio State, after the defending national champions dominated their opener. Alabama remained No. 1 in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank released Tuesday, receiving 44 of 63 first-place votes from the media panel and 1,552 points. The Bulldogs narrowed the gap on the Crimson Tide after beating Oregon 49-3 on Saturday. Georgia received 17 first-place votes.

Ohio State slipped to No. 3 and received two first-place votes. Michigan moved up four spots to No. 4. Clemson dropped a spot to No. 5. Florida debuted at No. 12 after its thrilling victory at home against Utah on Saturday night. The Utes slipped six spots to No. 13 after the loss. The rest of the top 10 was Texas A&M at No. 6, followed by Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Baylor and Southern California. USC is in the top 10 for the first time since the final regular-season poll of 2017, when the Trojans were eighth. The eighth-ranked Fighting Irish dropped three spots out of the top five after losing 21-10 at Ohio State. - AP College Football

So much of the talk about Georgia last year focused on a defense that produced five NFL first-round draft picks. The Bulldogs' defense showed no sign of dropping off against No. 11 Oregon, but it was the offense that was front and center statistically in a 49-3 win Sunday. The No. 3 and defending national champion Bulldogs became the second team in 15 seasons to score a touchdown on its first seven possessions against a ranked opponent. The seven TD drives ranged from six to 12 plays, the first six under the direction of quarterback Stetson Bennett. Backup Carson Beck was in the game for the seventh. The streak ended when they went three-and-out on their first full series of the fourth quarter. Last year Ohio State reached the end zone on its first seven drives, all in the first half, against then-No. 9 Michigan State. - AP College Football

Stetson Bennett threw for 368 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, a revamped defense didn't miss a beat, and No. 3 Georgia looked very much like a team intent of defending its national championship with a 49-3 rout of No. 11 Oregon on Saturday. Bennett completed 25-of-31 passes with two touchdowns and ran for another score before calling it a day in the third quarter of the season opener, the Bulldogs leading 42-3 and having thoroughly ruined the debut of Oregon coach Dan Lanning. After spending the last three years as Georgia's co-defensive coordinator, Lanning got a look at his former team from the opposing sideline in a game played before a predominantly red-clad crowd at the home of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

One awful performance into his head coaching career, Lanning saw just how far the Ducks have to go. Bennett, the former walk-on who led a storybook run to Georgia's first national title since 1980, returned for a sixth college season with a firm grip on the starting job after battling for playing time most of his career. Bennett picked up where he left off in last year's College Football Playoff, when he was offensive MVP of both the semifinals and the title game victory over Alabama. Bennett guided the Bulldogs to the end zone on all six possessions he played. He ran for a 1-yard score and tossed TD passes of 4 yards to Ladd McConkey and 18 yards to Adonai Mitchell. - Georgia/AP College Football

Stetson Bennett was the star of Georgia's Media Day on Wednesday, as reporters gathered around the sixth-year senior at his table at the rear of the big room of the College Football Hall of Fame. Questions were hurled his way about being a champion, his route to stardom and the Bulldogs' quarterback room. Then he was asked about what more he could do to please the doubters. The knock against him was that he didn't have the moxie to lead Georgia to a win when it needed him too. Then he did it in the national championship, a game after a superb performance against Michigan in the semifinals.

What more could he possibly do to earn respect? He sat back, breathed heavily, and deliberated his answer. "If I'm sitting in the mirror wondering how I'm going to please all those people-that reeks almost of desperation," Bennett said on Wednesday. "Avoiding that poison, thoughts that enter your mind that you have nothing to do with...Why am I going to put 10,000 other people's opinions on my plate? I can't do anything about it." Bennett last season led the ninth best scoring offense while throwing the 16th most touchdown passes. His QB rating of 86.7% was third in the country, behind only Ohio State's CJ Stroud (91.6) and Alabama's Bryce Young (87.6), each ranked first or second on most QB lists. - Athens Daily Banner

Florida hired Billy Napier in hopes of eventually taking the Gators back to their glory days of winning big and lifting trophies like their rival Georgia did in January. The new Gators football coach had a unique perspective of seeing the Bulldogs win the national title as former walk-on Stetson Bennett helped rally Georgia in the fourth quarter to the 33-18 win over Alabama.

The quarterback had committed to play for Napier at Louisiana before making a signing day switch and accepting a scholarship offer to Georgia in December of 2018. "I'm watching that game and I'm like, man," Napier said. "It's who the guys is, right? He's an underdog, he's a competitor. I love his approach to life, his perspective. I've got a ton of respect." Napier and the Gators will go up against Bennett and the Bulldogs on Oct. 29 in Jacksonville. "I love Stetson Bennett, and I'm really happy for the kid," Napier said. "The kid is living his dream. He got an opportunity that he cherished. It was really special to him. Nothing but respect for the kid, the family and I couldn't be more happy for him." - Athens Daily Banner

With one overwhelming half at the Orange Bowl, No. 3 Georgia showed that a humbling loss to Alabama did not break the Bulldogs. In fact, it might have made them even stronger. Stetson Bennett threw three touchdown passes, Nakobe Dean led an angry defense and Georgia returned to its dominant ways, beating No. 2 Michigan 34-11 on Friday night to advance to the College Football Playoff championship. "Answered a million questions about our team, bouncing back and how you played," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. "We've got a lot of high-character guys on this team and they played their tail off today." Georgia (13-1) earned a rematch with Southeastern Conference nemesis Alabama (13-1) in the title game Jan. 10 in Indianapolis.

It was 27 days ago the Crimson Tide rolled through the Bulldogs, shattering their air of invincibility after a 12-0 regular season in which they were hardly challenged. "All our guys did was work," Smart said about how they responded to the loss and three weeks of being asked what went wrong. The Bulldogs quickly answered any questions about whether the damage from that 41-24 setback would linger. Georgia became the first team in the eight-year history of the CFP to score on each of its first five possessions and led 27-3 at halftime. "We knew we were better than what we showed that last game," Bennett said. - Georgia/AP College Football

Stetson Bennett passed for 255 yards and four touchdowns, including two to tight end Brock Bowers, and No. 1 Georgia finished its undefeated regular season by overwhelming Georgia Tech 45-0 on Saturday. Georgia (12-0) gained momentum for next week's much-anticipated Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 3 Alabama in Atlanta. It is the first undefeated regular season for the Bulldogs since 1982, when they capped a streak of three consecutive SEC championships with tailback Herschel Walker. The renewal of the battle for state bragging rights was a mismatch.

Georgia, which began the day leading the nation with its averages of 7.5 points and 236 yards allowed, posted its third shutout while giving up only 171 yards. Bowers had a 77-yard touchdown catch, and Kenny McIntosh added a 59-yard scoring run. Bowers, a freshman, also scored on a 9-yard catch. He has 10 touchdown receptions, a school record for tight ends. Georgia Tech (3-9) finished with three wins for the third consecutive season under coach Geoff Collins, who acknowledged this week he will need to show improvement next year. The Yellow Jackets closed the season with six consecutive losses following a 3-3 start. - Georgia/AP College Football

The Georgia Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 and just finished off a perfect run through the Southeastern Conference schedule. They're not satisfied yet. Stetson Bennett ran for a touchdown and threw for another as Georgia routed Tennessee 41-17 Saturday. The Bulldogs (10-0, 8-0, No. 1 CFP) went unbeaten in the SEC regular season for the first time since the league split into divisions in 1992 and went to an eight-game schedule. "Nobody thinks they've arrived," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. "There's things we can continue to work to get better at, and they'll continue to do that. But tonight? They went through a tough gauntlet in our league and played well." Georgia already had its fourth berth in the SEC championship game in five years locked up coming into this game. The Bulldogs last went undefeated in league play in 1982 with a 6-0 mark, also the last time the Bulldogs started 10-0. "I mean 39 years, I mean it's special ..." Bennett said. The Bulldogs actually trailed by their largest margin this season after Tennessee scored a touchdown on the opening drive.

Georgia also was down 10-7 at the end of the first quarter, new territory for the Bulldogs, who had only trailed by a field goal each to Auburn and Missouri. Georgia responded by reeling off 27 straight points, including 17 in a dominating second quarter. Derion Kendrick intercepted a pass by Hendon Hooker, and Channing Tindall stripped Hooker of the ball - Tindall had three of Georgia's six sacks. "We didn't come up here to take shots," Smart said. "We came up here to throw them." - Georgia/AP College Football

With Georgia playing its first game as the nation's No. 1-ranked team since 2008, Stetson Bennett threw three touchdown passes and the Bulldogs got another stifling defensive effort to beat Kentucky. Bennett, starting his third straight game in place of injured JT Daniels, hooked up with freshman tight end Brock Bowers on a pair of scores. The senior quarterback was 14 of 20 for 250 yards in another solid performance with Daniels watching from the sideline for the Bulldogs (7-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference),

Bowers, who has emerged as one of Georgia's most dynamic offensive weapons in his first college season, had five receptions for 101 yards. Georgia's defense allowed two touchdown in a game for the first time all season — the second with 4 seconds remaining after Kentucky (6-1, 4-1) called a timeout to take one last shot at punching it in from the 1. Otherwise, Georgia's top-ranked defense lived up to the billing, limiting Kentucky to 249 total yards and blocking a pair of kicks. - Georgia/AP College Football

Stetson Bennett and No. 2 Georgia's defense were more than enough to take care of Auburn yet again. Bennett passed for 231 yards and two touchdowns and led the Bulldogs past No. 18 Auburn for the second straight year in a 34-10 victory Saturday even if the defense did allow an opponent to reach the end zone for a change. The nation's top defense gave up only its second touchdown of the year for the Bulldogs (6-0, 4-0 Southeastern Conference), who were still without injured starting quarterback JT Daniels. None of that kept Georgia from another comfortable SEC win and a fifth straight in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.

Bennett, who made his first college start in a Top 10 matchup with Auburn (3-2, 1-1) last season, completed 14 of 21 passes and hit Ladd McConkey in stride for a 60-yard third quarter score. He also had a 30-yard run. Daniels is out with a lat injury for the second straight week, along with some sidelined receivers. "It's next man up mentality," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. "That's what we talked about all week. We've got a lot of guys hurt and beat up, including the quarterback. We feel like he's getting better, but Stetson played a heck of a game." But the Jordan-Hare Stadium crowd didn't seem to bother the Bulldogs, who dominated in the trenches on both sides. "We won the line of scrimmage battle," Bennett said. "It was so much fun. I had a blast." Zamir White ran for 79 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns, doing most of his damage in the second half. - Georgia/AP College Football

Stetson Bennett did his best to create a quarterback controversy at Georgia. Stepping in for injured starter JT Daniels, Bennett tied a school record with five touchdown passes in the first half to lead No. 2 Georgia to a 56-7 rout of UAB on Saturday. The senior completed his first five passes - four of them going all the way to the end zone for the Bulldogs (2-0), who didn't show any signs of a letdown after a 10-3 victory over Clemson in the opener. Bennett, a former walk-on, started five games last season before Daniels claimed the job. It looks as if Bennett hasn't given up on winning it back. "I guess it's just an innate confidence," he said. "If you believe you're good enough, it really doesn't matter the situation that is thrust upon you." Jermaine Burton set the tone by slipping behind the secondary to haul in a 73-yard TD from Bennett on Georgia's second offensive play, thrilling the raucous crowd of nearly 93,000 at Sanford Stadium.

It was the first full house between the hedges since the 2019 season. Crowds were limited to about 20,000 last season because of the pandemic. By the opening minute of the second quarter, Bennett had scoring passes of 12 yards to Kenny McIntosh, 89 yards to Brock Bowers and 61 yards to Arian Smith. At that point, Bennett's passer rating was a staggering 775.6. The Blazers' secondary didn't put up much resistance, leaving Burton, Bowers and Smith wide open with blown coverages. "It always helps when you've got great players all over the field," Bennett said. Bennett tacked on his fifth TD pass of the game with another to Bowers, the freshman tight end finding a seam in the zone to grab a 9-yard throw that sent the Bulldogs to the locker room with a 35-0 halftime lead. - Georgia/AP College Football

That seemed obvious given he stuck with Bennett after two more interceptions Saturday to give him five in the last two games, matching the number Jake Fromm had all of last season in 14 games. "There was no discussion about it," Smart said. "A batted ball on a pass that he's got to get around a guy is not a real struggle. I know you could say, 'if it happens once, shame on me. If it happens twice, shame on you,' but it's one of those things where he's got to wrap the ball around it, he's got to throw it away, he's got to get another opportunity."

Bennett's two worst games in pass efficiency have come in the last two. Smart isn't judging Bennett on metrics like that but instead on things such as his second rushing touchdown of the season Saturday. "He also did a lot of good things in the run game," Smart said. "He pulled a ball and scored with it. He put us in the right run plays. He handled motion. He handled clock. He did some good things. He didn't get a chance to throw the ball an awful lot (Saturday) because we were able to run the ball." Smart and offensive coordinator Todd Monken haven't turned again to redshirt freshman D'Wan Mathis, the starter against Arkansas, or Southern Cal transfer JT Daniels, who has yet to play this season after a torn ACL last year. Making a quarterback change for Florida blew up on Georgia in 2015 and contributed to Smart ending up as Bulldogs head coach. The SEC Network broadcast crew said repeatedly Saturday that the impression they got after talking to Smart and Monken is that this is Bennett's team. - Athens Daily Banner

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett used "boneheaded" multiple times to describe his performance in Saturday's loss. He performed well in games against Arkansas, Auburn and Tennessee, but Alabama brought a new challenge. Bennett had three interceptions - most of which were on throws over the middle - to go along with two touchdowns. He threw for 269 yards, but had his share of woes. "I think Stetson has gotten better," Smart said. "When the level of competition changes, you don't change your evaluation. The experience he gained tonight will be invaluable through the rest of the run on the road." The latest chapter of Bennett's storybook didn't have another sweet ending. But he continues to have confidence from his coaches. He continues to hold a lead over JT Daniels and D'Wan Mathis. "He's a work in progress, much like our team," Smart said. "He's going to grow and develop." - Macon Telegraph

Stetson Bennett was interception free in the first three games of the season This time he had three. His third came when he scrambled to the right on a third-and-6 and safety Daniel Moore picked it off. There was no receiver near where Bennett threw the ball. "I was frustrated, I was frustrated with myself," Bennett said. "At that point, it was stupid. The mentality didn't change. We can't have those. Can't have interceptions like that." Defensive end Justin Eboigbe picked off a first half pass off a tip, one of several times a Bennett pass was deflected. Bennett had a pass tipped and off the hands off Jermaine Burton and intercepted by Malachi Moore returned 42 yards in the third quarter.

"I don't know for sure but I thought Jermaine could have caught it," Smart said. "It went through Jermaine's hands a little high and then they picked. Bennet's scramble out of the pocket and throwing it across the field was a "bonehead" play, Smart said. "He's growing up," Smart said. "He made some checks to put us in good situations." Bennett completed 18 of 40 passes for 269 yards with two touchdown and the three picks. "I just did not play well enough," he said. "Got to figure out not to have batted balls, got to figure out how not to have interceptions. Got to figure out how to score points in the second half." - Athens Daily Banner

Georgia hasn't beaten Alabama in 13 years and have lost seven-consecutive contests. The win in 2007, however, came on the overtime pass to Mikey Henderson inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. Georgia has won its last two meetings in Tuscaloosa. After Alabama's win Saturday over Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin, Nick Saban's record against former assistants rises to 22-0. Georgia has entrusted Stetson Bennett as starting quarterback and leader of the offense. He's the two-star former walk-on. He was never supposed to have much of a shot at the role, even leading up to the season opener. Through it all, the small-town kid has shined with much success for the Bulldogs. But Alabama isn't just any other opponent. Bennett had an up-and-down showing against Tennessee, nearly throwing a couple of interceptions. He will have to regroup on the biggest of stages. Under the lights with millions of eyes set on him, can Bennett continue his roll against the nation's No. 2 team? - Macon Telegraph

Bennett has a pair of wins on his resume over top 15 teams in his first two college starts. He completed 16 of 27 passes for 228 yards with two touchdowns and still hasn't thrown an interception. He hit Kearis Jackson on a 33-yard pass in the second half for his longest of the game and the two connected on a 21-yard touchdown. Bennett also rushed for 22 yards on six carries including an 8-yard touchdown run with 11:42 left in the second quarter. "We knew they were beating us because of things we had done," Bennett said. "We knew if we had cleaned it up, it would end up like it ended up."

The former walk-on who transferred from junior college scored running right on a design play, touching the pylon on the right front corner of the end zone. He took a shotgun snap and outraced safety Jaylen McCullough. That came after he scrambled for a 10-yard pickup. "The second play Coach Monken was feeling my legs,"Bennett said of offensive corodinator Todd Monken ."I guess I got in the end zone. The Bulldogs had 193 rushing yards and averaged 3.9 yards per carry. - Athens Daily Banner

Bennett's poise and steady hand have drawn praise. "He's just a natural baller and he loves the game," running back Zamir White said. "We love him, the crowd loves him." He's 37 of 57 for 457 yards this season with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions and is showing up on lists of Heisman Trophy contenders this week but he knows that his hold on the starting job isn't guaranteed. "If you don't produce, you don't play," he said Saturday. The Bennetts moved from Brantley County to Pierce County when Stetson was an eighth grader. Sean Pender, the former Brantley County coach who came by the field next to the pharmacy to watch and offered plays to run, had been hired to coach Pierce County.

"Little Man," as Pender called him to differentiate him from Stetson III, took over as Pierce County starter during his sophomore season in 2014 and is ninth on the Georgia high school career list in both passing yards (9,091) and passing touchdowns (95). He got the "Mailman" nickname by wearing a U.S. Postal Service cap to football camps in hopes of drawing more attention. The 3-star rated prospect by the 247Sports Composite was ranked No. 197 in the state of Georgia for 2017 and the nation's No. 74 quarterback behind eight other quarterbacks from the state. Bennett's height - now listed at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds - isn't what big-time programs were looking for at the position. "There's just a stigma out there when you don't fit certain measureables," said Pender, now Brunswick High coach. - Athens Daily Banner

Stetson Bennett threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, and No. 3 Georgia bounced back from Tennessee's goal-line stand on the final play of the first half, dominating the final 30 minutes to beat the 14th-ranked Volunteers 44-21 Saturday. The Bulldogs (3-0) knocked off a ranked Southeastern Conference team for the second week in a row, shaking off a a 21-17 deficit to completely wipe out the Volunteers over the final two quarters.

Showing it's still not ready to compete with the league's top programs, Tennessee (2-1) turned it over three times and managed just 71 yards total offense in the second half. Fittingly, Justin Guarantano was sacked on the final play of the game. Bennett ran for a 10-yard touchdown in the first half, hooked up with Kearis Jackson on a 21-yard scoring pass in the final minute of the third quarter, and sealed the victory with a 1-yard TD flip to 305-pound nose tackle Jalen Carter, who was supposedly in the game as an extra blocker. For good measure, Monty Rice stripped the ball away from Guarantano, scooped up the loose ball and ran 20 yards for a fitting epitaph to Georgia's defensive dominance as darkness fell over Athens. - AP College/Georgia Football

Bennett, after transferring back into the program and receiving a scholarship, backed up Jake Fromm last season and received a plethora of reps on the scout team. That experience was key to Bennett to earning his first-career start Saturday, but Smart never felt 100% sure the return would happen. He called it a "unique situation" for many reasons, but the fact that Bennett signed his national letter of intent around midnight in December validated the strange circumstance - along with the announcement being temporarily deleted on social media and many thinking that promoting the signing was a technical mistake. "We knew he would be a productive player and a good player," Smart said. "Stetson has never lacked in confidence for himself."

A year after returning from Jones Community College in Mississippi, the quarterback picture became more blurred for Bennett. Georgia brought in two transfers - Jamie Newman and JT Daniels - to compete for the starting role. Smart admitted Saturday that Georgia brought Newman in with the intention of starting. Daniels had the caliber to match his five-star recruiting moniker. Bennett was an afterthought when the Bulldogs seemingly had an overload of options. Newman opted out in August, but it still didn't seem to change much for Bennett. He wasn't going to be the season-opening starter. Everyone spoke about D'Wan Mathis or Daniels. The coaching staff had similar thoughts, too, and Bennett might not have been seen as a viable candidate. Bennett had to inquire about his role. His answer came under the spotlight, and the former two-star prospect beat out a list of highly-touted names. - Macon Telegraph

Kirby Smart was talking about Georgia's established defense after a less than inspiring showing by his offense in its opener against Arkansas when he sounded ready to lean heavily on that one side of the ball. "We're going to have to use them as we build the rest of our team up and as we grow as a team," the Bulldogs coach said. Smart, who made his reputation for his defensive coaching chops, even admitted that he was more focused on working through the offensive issues and less zeroed in on the defense.

A week later, the No. 4 Bulldogs 27-6 takedown of No. 7 Auburn Saturday marked a giant leap forward for the offense under first-year offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Stetson Bennett may as well have walked off the Sanford Stadium field with one of those office name plates engraved with the words: "Starting quarterback." In his first UGA start, Bennett led an offense that didn't need any points this time off a pick six or safety. No, the Bulldogs five scoring drives averaged 65 yards each with two 11 play drives and two 10 play drives. Georgia only had one three-and-out all night. "We really got whipped on all three phases," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "Stetson's never lacked confidence in himself," Smart said. "I'm happy for him. I want to temper that enthusiasm because he knows he's got to be better. People around him played well. That's important for Stetson, but he did a good job of understanding what we wanted to do in the game plan and he executed that really well." - Athens Daily Banner

Stetson Bennett threw for 240 yards and a touchdown in his first college start, Zamir White ran for a pair of scores and No. 4 Georgia romped to a 27-6 victory over No. 7 Auburn on Saturday night in the first Top 10 matchup of the college football season. The Bulldogs (2-0) buried Auburn with a 24-0 blitz in the first half, extending their domination of the Deep South's oldest rivalry. The teams had traditionally played in November, but a revamped Southeastern Conference schedule in this pandemic-affected season moved the game up to Week 2. It was their earliest meeting since the very first game in the series was played in February 1892.

No matter the time of year, Georgia kept the upper hand with a fourth straight victory over Auburn (1-1). The Bulldogs have won 13 of the last 16 meetings. Bennett, a fourth-year junior known as "The Mailman," sure delivered before a socially distanced crowd of 20,524 at Sanford Stadium. He didn't make any major mistakes while completing an efficient 17 of 28 passes, including a 21-yard touchdown to George Pickens. Kearis Jackson was Bennett's favorite receiver, hauling in nine catches for 147 yards. - Georgia/AP College Football

Here's what we know about the quarterbacks after this one: Stetson Bennett moved the offense much better than starter D'Wan Mathis. Southern Cal transfer JT Daniels may be waiting in the wings for his chance, but Bennett was at the helm when the Bulldogs poured on 32 second-half points. Georgia looked like it missed Jamie Newman more than expected after his September opt out. Bennett, the redshirt junior who was the backup last year, was quarterback for three drives when Georgia put up 101 of its 177 total first half yards. He finished 20 of 29 for 211 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. "I was expecting to come in," Bennett said. "If you don't, then it's kind of poor when you do. I always expect to. The first half, it was pretty poor. The second half was better. A few times, I checked to protections when I shouldn't have on that two-point conversion. It worked out but maybe next time it won't." So why did Smart yank Mathis with more than 10 minutes left in the first half? "We were on the headphones and said we were struggling offenisively and didn't have a lot of rhythym and needed to change things up," Smart said. " We just thought it would give us some energy. There's some things he can do well. and he's different than D'Wan in some of his experience. It gave us a spark. It helped us out He's very decisive with the ball. He makes good decisions." - Athens Daily Banner
