Penei Sewell is the first Oregon offensive lineman selected in the first round of the NFL draft since Kyle Long in 2013. Penei Sewell spent draft night at the family home in St. George, Utah, eating Pizza Hut in front of the television instead of bear-hugging NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on the stage in Cleveland. Mario Cristobal, the head of the 6-foot-6, 330-pound left tackle's Oregon football family, flew in for the festivities with defensive line coach Joe Salave'a after the Ducks' spring practice Thursday. About an hour into the first round, Sewell was selected by the Detroit Lions with the No. 7 overall pick in 2021 NFL draft.

"It's the world," Sewell said after realizing his American dream after spending most of his childhood living in a one-bedroom house in American Samoa. "Every time I think of this moment, I go back to that shack on the island with all my family. When we were all in the living room sleeping on that floor in that shack, and now look at us. "I'm in a position to really change my family dynamic and also play at the level I wanted to play my whole life. To be a part of the NFL and the Detroit Lions organization is nothing but a dream come true." - Register Guard

With quarterbacks expected to go with at least the top three picks in the draft and Cincinnati at No. 5, numerous projections have Sewell headed to the Bengals. With Taylor running one of the drills at Oregon's pro day, Sewell admitted to feeling some nerves at first but said being able to turn to his brother Gabe, a former linebacker at Nevada going through pro day at UO as well, helped. "At the end of the day, football is football for me," Sewell said. "Going out there clear-minded, not really getting those logos and those people's teams get over my head about that, not to overthink about that. At the end of the day, going out there and performing and doing what I do, being between those lines at pro day definitely brought a lot of memories."

Sewell felt people forgot about him a little bit after not playing last season and wanted to reaffirm that he's the best offensive tackle in this year's draft. The 2019 Outland Trophy winner and unanimous All-American felt his performance last week did that but above all, believes his film from albeit just 21 career college games, shows he's the best in class. "Go put on the tape," Sewell said. "Everybody go ahead and watch what I can do and nobody can do what I do in this draft in the offensive tackle rooms. I bring something totally different to the table and I think people know that. People will say whatever they want to say. All I have to say is put on the tape and watch me work." - The Oregonian

The best offensive lineman in college football is moving on to the NFL without playing his junior season. Penei Sewell, Oregon's starting left tackle and the reigning Outland Trophy winner, announced he is opting out of the 2020-21 season to prepare to for the 2021 NFL Draft. Sewell, a unanimous All-American last season, is widely projected as a top five pick in next year's draft. The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Sewell did not allow a sack last season, had eight games without allowing a pressure, hit or hurry and allowed just seven quarterback pressures in 466 pass-blocking snaps en route to becoming the third unanimous All-American in Oregon program history. He was the first sophomore offensive lineman and first Duck to ever win the Outland Trophy. - Oregon Live

Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons and Oregon tackle Penei Sewell are among 11 players selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America first team who are not slated to play this fall. The team was selected by 47 AP poll voters, who were asked to consider all Division I players - even those who had already opted out of the season or whose teams had postponed football. The results show just how much star power will be missing from this pandemic-altered college football season.

Twelve second-team All-Americans will also not play in the fall, including quarterback Justin Fields from defending Big Ten champion and preseason No. 2 Ohio State. The Big Ten, Pac-12, Mid-American and Mountain West conferences have decided to try to play football in the second semester. As of now, Fields has given no indication that he won't be with the Buckeyes if they do. Same goes for Sewell, the Outland Trophy winner and potential top-five NFL draft pick, and Oregon teammate Kayvon Thibodeaux, a sophomore defensive end. - AP College Football

The Pac-12 CEO Group voted unanimously to postpone all sport competitions through the end of the 2020 calendar year. The decision was made after consultation with athletics directors and with the Pac-12 COVID-19 Medical Advisory Committee who expressed concern with moving forward with contact practice. Student-athletes impacted by the postponement will continue to have their scholarships guaranteed. Additionally, the Pac-12 Conference strongly encourages that the NCAA grant students who opt out of competition this academic year an additional year of eligibility. As part of their guaranteed scholarships, they will continue to have university support, including academic advising and tutoring, among other support services. - Pac-12 Conference

The Pac-12 CEO Group today approved the 2020 Conference-only fall schedule for football, which features a 10-game slate and number of features designed to provide maximum flexibility. Additionally, the CEO Group approved competition start dates and preseason practice policies for Conference-only seasons for men's & women's soccer, women's volleyball, and men's & women's cross country. Practice policies and competition in all cases are subject to the approval of public health authorities and medical advice. Return-to-competition plans for each of these sports were determined following extensive consultation with the Pac-12's Medical Advisory Committee. The health and safety of our student-athletes and those connected to Pac-12 sports is our number one priority, and we are prepared to adjust plans if the health situation changes. In addition, the Conference previously announced that Pac-12 student-athletes who choose not to participate in intercollegiate athletics during the coming academic year because of safety concerns about COVID-19 will continue to have their scholarships honored by their university and will remain in good standing with their team. - Pac-12 Football

The Football Writers Association of America has announced the preseason watch list for the 2020 Outland Trophy, recognizing 85 standout interior linemen representing all 10 Division I FBS conferences and independents. This is the 75th anniversary season for the Outland Trophy and the watch list presents a diverse field of players to accompany the return of 2019 Outland Trophy winner, offensive tackle Penei Sewell of Oregon.

Sewell, a junior, is the only returning lineman among the 2019 Outland Trophy semifinalists and 2019 FWAA All-Americans. He became Oregon's first Outland Trophy winner last season and was the third consecutive sophomore to receive this prestigious award. The 6-6, 325-pound junior from Malaeimi, American Samoa and then Desert Hills High School in St. George, Utah, emerged as a dominant left tackle for the 2020 Rose Bowl champions and did not allow a sack last season. - The Football Writers Association of America

The Pac-12 Conference CEO Group announced today an adjustment of the 2020 schedules for Football, Volleyball and Soccer to a Conference-only model. This was done to safeguard the health and well-being of student-athletes, coaches, staff and all associated with athletics events, and to provide the maximum flexibility in scheduling because of COVID-19. In addition, the Pac-12 announced it will delay the start of mandatory athletic activities, until a series of health and safety indicators, which have recently trended in a negative direction, provided sufficient positive data to enable a move to a second phase of return-to-play activities. - Pac-12 Football

Sporting events in Oregon are likely to be without large crowds through at least the end of September. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced Thursday the steps the state will take as it begins reopening next week. Brown asked those planning large gatherings, such as concerts, festivals, sporting events and conventions, to cancel or significantly modify plans for anything scheduled through at least September. That is likely to impact the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, the Portland Timbers of the MLS, and Oregon and Oregon State college football. While the NBA and MLS have no firm plans of a restart yet, Oregon and Oregon State both have three home games scheduled in September. - AP College Football

The University of Oregon offensive line recently participated in a Zoom meeting. Former Ducks offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz was invited to join, and the current UO lineman had a chance to ask questions to a guy who played eight NFL seasons. Penei Sewell had questions, of course. I'm told he usually does. But what's surprised me, and some others, is that Sewell also has some critics. In fact, when I told Oregon coach Mario Cristobal about a recent discussion about it he said, "Critics? Last I checked, he's projected No. 2 overall." Cristobal was talking about the 2021 NFL Draft.

I realized some point early last season that Cristobal isn't wired like most football coaches. I told anyone who would listen that Oregon's coach might be thrilled, for example, if one of his players won the Heisman Trophy. But he'd be even more jazzed about a Ducks' offensive lineman bringing home the Outland Trophy. By the end of the season, most of us knew Sewell was going to win the award annually given to the best interior lineman in the country. "The No. 1 thing," Schwartz told me after that virtual meeting, "he wants to be better. He wants to be great." - The Oregonian

Rece Davis is "more optimistic" than his ESPN colleague about the 2020 college football season in terms of the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, "GameDay" analyst Kirk Herbstreit made headlines when he questioned whether there would be a college football season in the wake of COVID-19. On Monday, Davis joined "First Take" and was asked about Herbstreit's opinion. "I'm far more optimistic and more hopeful than Kirk's quote there at this point," Davis said Monday. "I just think that's a little bit premature at this juncture while offering the caveat that there is so much unknown out there. Kirk's right based on everything I've read in terms of medical experts, in terms of the vaccine. I'm hopeful and optimistic that with so many people working on this that we're going to have, at least, some kind of treatment, some type of break over the next several weeks that will, perhaps, make it far more feasible to have football. At this point, I'm far more optimistic. Might there be adjustments in the schedule? Might things change a little bit in terms of how the business is conducted? Sure."

Last week, Herbstreit said he would be "shocked" if there would be football this fall. "I'll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I'll be so surprised if that happens," Herbstreit said. "Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you're 12 to 18 months from a (coronavirus) vaccine. I don't know how you let these guys go into locker rooms and let stadiums be filled up and how you can play ball. I just don't know how you can do it with the optics of it." - Birmingham News

2019 OUTLAND TROPHY AWARD WINNER: Penei Sewell, Oregon,...Just 20 games into his collegiate career and just over two months since his 19th birthday, Oregon sophomore offensive lineman Penei Sewell is the most outstanding interior lineman in college football. Sitting alongside his parents, Arlene and Gabe, head coach Mario Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, Sewell was named the recipient of the 2019 Outland Trophy on Thursday night at The Home Depot College Football Awards held at the College Football Hall Of Fame in Atlanta. Sewell is the first player in Oregon history to win the Outland Trophy and just the third Pac-12 player to do so since 1999.   2019 OUTLAND TROPHY FINALIST: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon (6-6, 325, So., Malaeimi, American Samoa/St. George, Utah): Sewell is regarded as the top offensive lineman in the Pac-12 and one of the two best offensive tackles in the country. In short, he's the best lineman on the nation's best offensive line – an Oregon lineman has taken seven of the Pac-12's 11 Offensive Lineman of the Week awards, and Sewell has three of those seven. Head coach Mario Christobal says he's the best lineman he's ever coached. Sewell was the Outland Trophy Offensive Player of the Month for September and leads Oregon with 45 knockdowns blocking for an Oregon offense that is 21st nationally at 460.2 yards per game. He has five or more knockdowns in five of 11 games. Run-blocking is his specialty but he has yielded only six QB pressures this season and one sack. - FWAA
