One of the players expected to compete with DeVito in training camp wasn't even on the field Thursday night. Rutgers transfer Art Sitkowski spent part of the game working in the WDWS radio booth with Brian Barnhart and Steve Kelly. Sitkowski has been lim ited this spring as he recovers from shoulder and arm surgeries. He broke his arm late in Illinois' nine-overtime victory at Penn State and was lost for the season. Sitkowski's shoulder had been ailing before the Penn State. The hope is the surgery helps return the zip to his passes. The Illinois coaches want internal competition, in the quarterback room and every other position. If Sitkowski is able to push DeVito in summer training camp, it will be a positive for the team. Illinois quarterback Artur Sitkowski will miss the rest of the season after breaking his left arm against Penn State. Brandon Peters will start the Illini's home game against Rutgers on Saturday. Coach Bret Bielema announced Monday that Sitkowski would h ave surgery on his arm Wednesday and have another operation in two to four weeks to correct a chronic problem in his right shoulder. Bielema said Sitkowski would miss spring practice and should be full strength next fall. Sitkowski's arm was broken when he was hit as he threw a rollout pass in the fourth overtime of Illinois' 20-18 nine-overtime win at Penn State last Saturday.Sitkowski completed half his passes (74 of 148) for 704 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions in his five games . The sophomore was in his first year with the Illini after transferring from Rutgers. He replaced an injured Peters early in the opener against Nebraska and led the Illini to a 30-22 win. Sitkowski started the next two games and backed up Peters the fol lowing four. Peters was injured against Wisconsin on Oct. 9 and cleared to play against Penn State, but Bielema started Sitkowski. Bret Bielema was struck by one aspect the first time he spoke with Art Sitkowski after the Rutgers quarterback entered the transfer portal. Sitkowski's maturity resonated with the Illinois football coach in the spring and continued to impress Bielema thr ough the summer into training camp and, ultimately, the Illini's season opener. Sitkowski was thrust into the spotlight in the first quarter of Saturday's game against Nebraska after Brandon Peters left with an injury. And the 6-foot-5, 225-pound quarter back settled in after a semi-bumpy start and guided Illinois to a 30-22 victory. "I wasn't going to be surprised at all if Art was put in the moment about how he would handle the moment," Bielema said. "I didn't know how he was going to play, but I knew the handling of it wouldn't be an issue. It's just his demeanor. He's so serious, but also has a good light to him." He only turned in one real highlight play, but the Rutgers transfer completed 12 of 15 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns while not turning the ball over. Under a new coach, with fans packed into the stands for the first time since 2019 and its backup quarterback at the helm, Illinois beat Nebraska 30-22 on Saturday to kick off the 2021 college football season. The Big Ten conference win didn't come withou t a price for the Illini. Illinois starting quarterback Brandon Peters left the game holding his left (non-throwing) shoulder after being sacked hard near the end of the first quarter. He was 3-of-4 passing for 35 yards. He did not return and was replace d by Artur Sitkowski, a sophomore transfer from Rutgers. Peters' status wasn't clear following Saturday's game."No injury updates yet," first-year Illinois coach Bret Bielema said. "But as you could see, it was Brandon's non-throwing arm, so there 's that." Sitkowski engineered several long scoring drives using a balanced attack under Bielema's new system, which he worked to perfection during a successful tenure at Wisconsin. Sitkowski was 12 of 15 passing for 124 yards, two touchdowns and no inte rceptions. "I can't say enough about Art," Bielema said of his backup quarterback. "You know, from day one he just projected a serious, very direct kind of personality. He walks like a quarterback and he talks like a quarterback. When I see our players r allying around a quarterback like that, well, you know you've got something." The former Rutgers quarterback has only been with the Fighting Illini for a few weeks after his transfer this spring, but he is already earning his teammates respect in Champaign. "There are a lot of positive things about his involvement," Bielema said T hursday at Big Ten Media Days. Sitkowski, an Old Bridge native, entered the NCAA transfer portal in April following a wild three years with the Scarlet Knights. Illinois was in the market for a veteran passer, preferably with two or three years eligibili ty left, and Bielema said things moved quickly once the two sides made contact. Familiarity helped; former Rutgers defensive coordinator Andy Buh is now the Illini's linebackers coach and several of Bielema's assistants knew Sitkowski from the recruiting trail.Former Rutgers coach Chris Ash, who coached with Bielema at Wisconsin and Arkansas, also put in a good word. "A couple of my coaches knew of him [and] I called Chris and he was very upfront about what kind of person he was, player he was," Bielema said. "Art was really one of the first guys (targeted) after we got done with spring ball. It was a pretty quick courting relationship. Art Sitkowski's college football voyage has primarily been navigating through choppy waters. Beginning June 1, he will join his new Illini football teammates for summer workouts and a much-anticipated fresh start and smoother ride. "It's definitely a fre sh start," Sitkowski said. "I'm really excited for the opportunity presented to me, the people in the building at Illinois and the opportunity to compete. That's all I can ask for." A four-star prospect rated the No. 9 pro-style quarterback in the 2018 r ecruiting class out of IMG Academy in Florida, Sitkowski had many offers from which to choose.In the fall of his senior season, he flipped his pledge from Miami to his home state school, Rutgers. He enrolled at mid-year so he could get assimilated and participate in spring drills. What lay ahead could easily have proven to be too daunting for anyone with less fortitude, self-confidence and competitiveness. Illinois football's quarterback room became a bit more full Wednesday when Artur Sitkowski announced his intention to transfer from Rutgers to the Illini. The 6-foot-5, 224-pound athlete has spent the last three college football seasons with the Scarlet Knights. After making 11 starts as a freshman in 2018, he made just four starts over the next two seasons while appearing in seven games during that same stretch. Sitkowski went 52 of 81 for 444 yards and three touchdowns passing during the 2020 campaign , losing repetitions to senior Nebraska transfer Noah Vedral and junior Boston College transfer Johnny Langan.Sitkowski caps his Rutgers career having completed 230 of 422 passes for 2,031 yards and eight touchdowns. His freshman-year passing stat line was 134 of 273 for 1,158 yards and four scores. The quarterback position hasn't been one of stability in recent seasons for Rutgers, and it remains a question mark heading into the 2020 season. Sitkowski requested to voluntarily redshirt after Nunzio Campanile took over upon Chris Ash's firing, a request that Campanile honored. Greg Schiano has added another former Rutgers assistant coach to his Scarlet Knights staff. Schiano announced Tuesday that Joe Susan will serve as special assistant to the head coach. The veteran mentor has more than 40 years of experience at the collegi ate level, including nine recently as head coach at Bucknell and nine on Schiano's previous staff. Susan most recently served as special assistant to the director of athletics at Bucknell. He had resigned as head football coach following the 2018 season. Susan was on Schiano's original staff in 2001, serving two seasons as offensive line coach. He moved to tight ends in 2003 and added the title of recruiting coordinator in 2004. Rutgers has hired Sean Gleeson as its offensive coordinator, the latest New Jersey native or former Scarlet Knights' assistant to join the staff. Coach Greg Schiano announced the hiring Saturday. Gleeson spent last season as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. He worked the previous six seasons at Princeton. Former Rutgers receiver Tiquan Underwood was named the wide receivers coach on Friday. Earlier, Schiano hired Jim Panagos for a second stint as defensive line coach and made Camden native F ran Brown his secondary coach. "Sean is one of the brightest young offensive minds in college football and we are happy to welcome him and his family to Rutgers," said Schiano, who was hired in December for a second tour with the Scarlet Knights. "He has worked his way up the ranks with a history of developing quarterbacks and highly productive offensive schemes."Gleeson, of Glen Ridge, New Jersey, guided one of the most explosive offenses in the Football Championship Subdivision in his lone seas on with Oklahoma State. Three Oklahoma State offensive players earned All-Big 12 honors, including Big 12 Offensive Player Chuba Hubbard, who led the nation with 2,093 yards rushing and an an average of 179.54 all-purpose yards. After an on-again, off-again courtship, Greg Schiano is back as Rutgers football coach. Of course, it didn't go off without a Rutgers-like hitch. There was a glitch with microphones at a public hearing before the deal became official. The university's Bo ard of Governors on Tuesday approved an eight-year, $32 million contract to bring back the former Scarlet Knights coach to lead the downtrodden program that has lost 21 straight Big Ten Conference games and won seven others over the last three seasons. T he 53-year-old Schiano will be introduced at a news conference on Wednesday.The agreement, which was signed by Schiano and athletic director Pat Hobbs on Saturday and announced on Sunday, will give the coach a $4 million annual salary and $7.7 mil lion annually to hire a staff, with the amount increasing 3% annually. The incentive-laden contract runs through February 2028. The board's vote on telephone conference call took less than 10-to-15 seconds. The 20 minutes before the vote were mostly proc edure measures and a chance for some to vent about problems at the university not related to football. Five people addressed the board on issues ranging from a new contract for more than 1,100 physicians associated with the university, spending money on an athletic department that annually loses money and a failure of the board to release terms of Schiano's deal before approving it. - AP College Football

Greg Schiano and Rutgers have agreed to a deal that will bring the former Scarlet Knights coach back to lead the program, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity early Sunday morning b ecause contract details were still being finalized. Yahoo! Sports first reported Schiano and Rutgers had agreed in principle to a deal. The move comes a week after both sides walked away from negotiations and declared the possibility of a reunion dead. Artur Sitkowski may not be Rutgers' starting quarterback this season. But if the sophomore does hold onto his job and improves off last year's ugly freshman campaign, at least one rival coach believes he can be a difference-maker for the Scarlet Knights. "[Sitkowski] threw a lot of picks, but he has a lot of raw arm talent," an anonymous opposing coach told Athlon Sports in its season preview magazine. "You can live with the mistakes now, because if it clicks for him, he can change everything for them. They have to improve at that position, because there are athletes on the outside.
