When it comes to UCLA quarterbacks, Dorian Thompson-Robinson has run the Bruins' show the past two seasons and will more than likely do it again in 2020. In what could be a make-or-break year for the Bruins' coaching staff, Thompson-Robinson is expected to have a breakout season, but that's only if he makes strides in becoming more consistent. UCLA will also need to rely on growing its depth in the quarterback group following the transfer of their go-to backup during spring practice.

When Thompson-Robinson is good, he's great. Examples from last season include UCLA's historic comeback win over Washington State featuring his school-record 564 total yards of offense, as well as his 431 total yards against USC - second-most ever by a Bruin against the Trojans. The Bruins have won seven games the past two seasons, five of which Thompson-Robinson started. He finished 2019 with 2,899 total yards and 21 touchdown passes. However, with 12 interceptions and only four running touchdowns, the junior is still missing pieces in his decision-making that limit him in becoming the full package. Heading into 2020, UCLA is going to need the junior to hone in on consistency and leadership. - Orange County Register

Dorian Thompson-Robinson wasn't sure he was going to start Thursday's game until just before game time. It turned out to be the best decision of the night. Thompson-Robinson, using the bye week to help his recovery from a leg injury that caused him to miss a game, passed for two touchdowns and ran for another in helping UCLA end an 11-year drought against Stanford with a 34-16 victory over the Cardinal. "I was day-to-day until tonight," Thompson-Robinson said. "I had been practicing but I was told just before game time." Thompson-Robinson passed for 192 yards and rushed for 66 as UCLA snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Cardinal, dating to 2008. Joshua Kelley rushed for 176 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown run and a 53-yard gain. Kyle Phillips caught 10 passes for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

"A win is always good," Thompson-Robinson said. "It goes back to getting together in the offseason and working on things like this." Jack West became Stanford's third different starting quarterback of the season, the first time that's happened since 1974. After early success, his inconsistent play led to a stalled offense. "I'm always preparing to be the guy and this week happened to be the game," West said. "It's me making my first start but at the end of the day, it's about execution, which is what we didn't have." The Bruins (2-5, 2-2 Pac-12) scored touchdowns on their first two possessions, both passes to Phillips, to open a 14-3 lead with 4:48 remaining to play. It was UCLA's first lead of more than seven points this season. - UCLA/AP College Football

Coach Chip Kelly says he never lost faith in his UCLA team, even as it was losing its first three games. Kelly said the Bruins played hard all 12 quarters of those losses, and that paid dividends when they fell behind at No. 19 Washington State on Saturday night. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Demetric Felton with 1:07 left in the game as UCLA overcame a 32-point second-half deficit to claim a wild 67-63 victory over the Cougars. "I always thought we were a good football team," Kelly said. "If we could be consistent." "When you are battle-tested like our guys are, I think that showed up today."

The Bruins overcame a record nine TD passes by Washington State's Anthony Gordon. After Felton's TD, Gordon was sacked and fumbled - the team's sixth turnover of the game - on the next possession with about a minute remaining and UCLA recovered and ran out the clock. Thompson-Robinson threw for 507 yards and five touchdowns for UCLA (1-3, 1-0 Pac-12). Gordon threw for 570 yards and broke the school record with nine TD passes for Washington State (3-1, 0-1). Jacksonville Jaguars' starting QB Gardner Minshew, a sixth round draft pick who was on the WSU sidelines for Saturday's game, held the school record of seven TD passes in a game, set in November 2018 against Arizona. - UCLA/AP College Football
