Sooner center Creed Humphrey will cut his Oklahoma career a year short and enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Humphrey announced he will forego his senior season one day after the Sooners' 55-20 victory over Florida in the Cotton Bowl Classic. "Playing at the University of Oklahoma these past four years has been everything I hoped for and more," Humphrey said in a statement posted to his Twitter account. "Winning four straight Big 12 championships, a Joe Moore Award, and being the Big 12 offensive lineman of the year twice...After talking with my coaches and family, I have decided that it is time for me to begin the next chapter of my life." Humphrey, a Shawnee native, started three seasons as OU's center and earned All-America honors in 2019 and this past season. - Norman Transcript

When adversity hit OU last season, then-quarterback Jalen Hurts spoke up. Hurts addressed the team after they arrived home following a 48-41 loss to Kansas State in Manhattan. So, who is providing that same accountability to this year's squad? "We've got quite a few guys...Our two captains are very vocal and aggressive and have done a tremendous job, both Creed (Humphrey) and Pat (Fields)," OU coach Lincoln Riley said. "Ronnie Perkins, even though he hasn't been able to play, is still a pretty influential guy there. We've got several others that have not been afraid to step up and chime in. That's what you want. You don't want one guy."

Humphrey, OU's starting center, and Fields, one of two first-string safeties, were the only players made available to the media following OU's Saturday loss to the Wildcats. Humphrey said the team was disappointed following the defeat but is focused on moving on to Iowa State. "Everybody is pretty upset," Humphrey said after last weekend's game. "Just too many mental mistakes. Too many penalties, too many turnovers. Those things cost you and they cost us today. Obviously, we're pretty upset right now, but we have to come back to work and get ready for next week. No choice but to come back to work." - Norman Transcript

Creed Humphrey had two solid reasons to end his Oklahoma football career early. The All-American center had the option to kickstart his NFL career following 2019. Humphrey chose to return to school, announcing his intention to stay in Norman in January. Humphrey, a Shawnee High School product, cited in a tweet that playing at OU had been a dream ever since he could remember and felt there was a chance for the Sooners "to do something very special this year" as to why he came back. The 2019 Rimington Trophy finalist, an award annually presented to the nation's top center, remains solid with his decision. "There was never really any thought of me opting out," Humphrey said during a Zoom video conference with media on Friday. "I came back to play this fall. That's my goal and that's what I planned to do no matter what."

Humphrey's decision solidifies an OU offensive line that brings back all of its 2019 starters. OU returns tackles Erik Swenson and Adrain Ealy and guards Marquise Hayes and Tyrese Robinson to complement Humphrey at center. The group went through a few growing pains as they replaced 2019 NFL draft picks Cody Ford, Ben Powers, Bobby Evans and Dru Samia last season but eventually became a dependable an strong unit. Humphrey is confident the Sooners' 2020 offensive line is just as good as it was when he first took over as the team's starting center in 2018 alongside Ford, Powers, Evans and Samia. "This group has as much talent as any group since I've been here," Humphrey said. - Norman Transcript

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby and the conference announced that it will suspend spring football practice through May 31. The Big 12 announced Sunday night that it has extended suspension of team activities from March 29 until May 31 due to the coronavirus. This suspension includes all team and individual practices, meetings, and other organized gatherings, including spring football. The Big 12 had previously canceled competition against other teams through the rest of the spring semester. However, teams are still allowed to meet virtually and can conduct film study, technical discussions, tactical sessions and other non-physical activities, but such activities are limited to two hours per week. The suspension will be re-evaluated regularly and revisited or adjusted as circumstances dictate. - Waco Tribune
