Stephen Carr had 109 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Michael Penix Jr. passed for 373 yards to help Indiana beat Western Kentucky 33-31 on Saturdya night. Penix completed a career-high 34 passes on 53 attempts. Ty Fryfogle had 10 receptions for 98 yards, including a 10-yard reception on third-and-8 with 1:55 to play that allowed the Hoosiers to run out the clock and escape with the victory.Penix said he found a rhythm early and was able to continue it for most of the game, thanks to his tru st in his reads of the Western Kentucky defense. "It was just simple rhythm and making my reads," Penix said. "It was just trusting my eyes and trusting my reads." Indiana, which had two touchdowns and four field goals on its first six possessions, never trailed. Carr scored on a 1-yard touchdown to cap an 11-play, 79-yard opening drive and make it 7-0 with 10:15 left in the first quarter. Penix completed 5 of 6 passes for 51 yards in the drive. Following a three-and-out by Western Kentucky, the Hoosier s went 81 yards in 11 plays and Penix scored on a quarterback sneak to push the lead to 14-0 about five minutes later. Carr's track record coming out of USC is proven. He endured some injuries, including back and foot issues that sidelined him for a handful of games over the last three seasons. But with 1,329 yards rushing and 12 TDs rushing and 57 catches for 421 yards and one TD receiving, Carr brings a dual-threat element to the position that could spark IU's run game, which lacks big-play ability. The Hoosiers ranked 12th in the Big Ten in rushing at 108.6 yards per game and 13th in yards per carry at 3.1. "His stre ngths are he's very explosive," McCullough said. "His change of direction is high end, his ability to obviously make people miss. He runs with power. He runs with decisiveness...His pass protection is where I want it to be also. Obviously, he has great h ands. We'll be able to see those on display as we continue to go through the season. The things to continue to work on is all the finer points of our offense, just continuing to work on those, seeing signals, different things like that, not relying on th e quarterback to tell him the plays." Indiana's first intrasquad football scrimmage of fall camp revealed a high-charged offense and the emergence of Southern California transfer running back Stephen Carr. Indiana coach Tom Allen said Monday the offense had the upper hand on the defense Satu rday when the first and second teams squared off at Memorial Stadium. "Probably the first time that that's happened throughout fall camp with an extended amount of plays, so that was good to see as well," Allen said. "I thought our defense responded very well (Monday) to that, so it's a typical back and forth, but being the first full scrimmage, it's really the most amount of live tackling that we've done. Tackling was OK but needs to get better, which is usually the case for the first one."Allen said the strong offensive execution began with the play of all three quarterbacks on the depth chart. Starter Michael Penix Jr., backup Jack Tuttle and freshman third-stringer Donaven McCulley all took snaps in the scrimmage. Allen said the 6-foot-1, 21 5-pound Carr has created some separation in the position battle for starting running back. "It's pretty obvious," Allen said. "He's a good back, and the thing about him is he does a lot of things well. He obviously can run the football, but he can pass p ro(tect), and he has really good hands and just understands football, has played a lot of football, and some guys have that knack to them. New Indiana running back Stephen Carr admitted it was a tough decision to leave USC. It was Carr's dream school, the one the former five-star recruit from Gardena, California, committed to the moment he was offered a scholarship there. But after four up- and-down seasons with the Trojans, Carr decided this offseason to end his college football career at Indiana as a graduate transfer. He'll be reunited with new IU running backs Deland McCullough, who coached him at USC in 2017 as a freshman before leavin g for an NFL job with the Kansas City Chiefs. But Carr, who arrived on IU's campus last week to begin offseason workouts, said Tuesday playing under McCullough wasn't the only factor in his decision to play for the Hoosiers. "Being away from my family an d friends, not being able to hang out with them so easily, I feel like this is a great opportunity to focus on myself and learn a lot about myself and really determine if I want it that bad, which I think I do - which I know I do," Carr said.The 6 -foot, 215-pound Carr will begin that process this offseason, where he will compete for the starting running back job at IU with returning junior Sampson James and returning sophomores David Ellis and Tim Baldwin. IU could end up taking more of a running backs-by-committee approach with the departure of workhorse running back Steve Scott III, who signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in April. "I can't wait for these next five months to see the end result of these next five month s, but I'm just being patient, taking it day by day," Carr said. Each of the returners in the running back room offered something a little different. James has flashed a mix of burst and power. Baldwin is smooth and savvy, capable of recognizing his cutback lane and picking up yards in chunks. Ellis is a unique hybrid , a natural receiver who can make plays in space. What makes Carr unique is, in his ideal form, he's a little bit of all of those things. The former five-star prospect just never quite put it all together in four years at USC. Repeated injuries and the d epth of the Trojans' backfield made it hard for Carr to settle in as a three-down back. But he was highly regarded as a recruit because he flashed an ability to do it all, turning on a dime and making people miss, churning out tough yards, when necessary . What he's proven most is his ability to catch passes out of the backfield.Carr's upside potential is intriguing, especially with the departure of Scott. But at the very least, Carr's arrival brings competition to IU's running back room. Yes, Jam es has the makings of an every-down back. But he could never quite surpass Scott for carries. Yes, Baldwin and Ellis have talent. But they don't have a ton of experience. Carr will push James, Baldwin, and Ellis to their maximum, and he will also serve a s insurance against failure. But if the situation merits, it's not out of the question that McCullough splits carries between two or three. Devine Redding and Jordan Howard were both 1,000-yard rushers in 2015. Indiana has dipped into the transfer portal for another potential impact player, landing a commitment from Southern Cal running back Stephen Carr as a graduate transfer. A five-star high school recruit from Gardena, California, Carr rushed for 1,329 yard s on 264 carries (5-yard average) with 12 TDs in three seasons with the Trojans. The 6-foot, 215-pound Carr also was effective catching the ball out of the backfield, with 57 catches for 421 yards and one TD and returned 15 kickoffs for 321 yards. At IU, Carr will be reunited with IU running backs coach Deland McCullough, who recruited Carr to USC before leaving to take the running backs coaching job with the Kansas City Chiefs. Carr will join an IU position group that includes junior Sampson Jame s, sophomore Tim Baldwin, sophomore David Ellis and returning walk-ons Charlie Spegal and Davion Ervin-Poindexter. As USC leaves behind a by-committee approach to its backfield, one of its most experienced running backs is planning to leave USC. Stephen Carr has decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal, a person familiar with the decision confirmed to The Times, end ing an up-and-down, four-year tenure that started with a bang as a freshman, only to taper off in the seasons that followed.His departure clears the way for Texas transfer Keaontay Ingram to join forces with sixth-year senior Vavae Malepeai as the two top backs in a Trojans rushing attack that last season ranked among the worst in college football. USC averaged just 97 yards rushing per game during its shortened 2020 campaign, worse than all but seven teams at the FBS level. Carr played a mostly part-time role, rushing for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 46 attempts, second-most on the team behind Malepeai. But the trio of Malepeai, Carr, and oft-injured Markese Stepp, who left in January for Nebraska, never found its rhythm. A lackluster showin g on the ground led USC to replace its offensive line coach and run game coordinator and retool its philosophy. The past few seasons, the USC run game has had too many cooks in the backfield. Since the end of Ronald Jones II's junior year in 2017, the Trojans have employed a by-committee approach at running back only to finish in the bottom-quarter of Pac-12 rushi ng attacks each time. After bottoming out in 2020, averaging the fewest ground yards per game in the conference, USC is looking for a different approach in 2021, searching this spring and during the summer for a pair of leading backs. Or, as position coa ch Mike Jinks puts it, 1A and 1B. "It's exciting," senior back Vavae Malepeai said of the opportunity. "We all just focus on what's in front of us and where our feet is. It's a matter of enjoying the process and making sure we trust the process."S o far at spring camp, there have been four contenders for the two jobs. Malepeai and fellow senior Stephen Carr are the two returners, while Texas transfer Keaontay Ingram and freshman Brandon Campbell have entered the fray. Of the four, Carr had the bes t performance at the spring game two weeks ago. He had eight carries for 53 yards and a touchdown and a catch for an extra 13 yards. Coach Clay Helton said Monday that Carr has had "his best camp to date," while Jinks was similarly effusive in his praise of the senior all-purpose back. "He looks as good as he's ever been since I've been here," Jinks said. Over the previous two seasons , Carr never quite matched the standard he set in the first month of his freshman year, when he averaged 107 total yards per game and scored three times. He's equaled that yardage just three times and added eight touchdowns in the 25 games since. But as practices turned to full pads last week, coaches say they've seen a different version of Carr, one that dances less at the line of scrimmage and welcomes more contact in between the tackles. Both Jinks and Helton said Carr "set the tone" with his physica lity during the first full-contact practice. "I just want to be more physical this year," Carr said. "That's really the only thing on my mind. The college world has seen a lot of what I can do when it comes to catching the ball out of the backfield, maki ng people miss." A healthy hamstring should help on both accounts. After that injury sapped some of Carr's trademark explosiveness last year, Jinks said the senior added five or six inches to his vertical leap this offseason. That burst isn't the only ma rk of his improvement. Carr said he spent the offseason studying tape of Ronald Jones II, the former Trojans back starting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and still watches clips of him before some practices. Vavae Malepeai and Stephen Carr are back for their senior seasons. Carr returns after rushing 72 times for 396 yards and five touchdowns as a junior after missing three games with a hamstring injury. About 45 percent of his yards came in two games, a 94- yard performance at Washington and an 87-yard game against UCLA.
