Cam Fancher threw two touchdown passes and Khalan Laborn ran for two scores and Marshall ended the regular season beating Georgia State 28-23 on Saturday. Down 17-14, Fancher threw a 32-yard touchdown to Charles Montgomery to give Marshall the lead for good at 21-17 with 10:09 remaining. After forcing Georgia State to three-and-out on the ensuing drive, Laborn crashed from the 1 on fourth-and-1 to make it 28-17. Rasheen Ali's 33-yard run to the Panthers' 6 helped set up Marshall's final score.

On Georgia State's next drive, Marcus Carroll scored from the 2 to conclude a five-play, 75-yard that lasted 1:46. The 2-point conversion failed and the score was 28-23 with 3:45 to play. Darren Grainger's 54-yard completion to Jamari Thrash set up the game's final score. Marshall (8-4, 5-3 Sun Belt) ended it driving 61 yards in eight plays after the Panthers (4-8, 3-5) kicked off long in favor of an on-sides kick. Ali ran for 102 yards on 16 carries and Laborn ran for 100 yards on 11 carries. Grainger threw for 291 yards and a touchdown. It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs. - Marshall/AP College Football

True freshman Rece Verhoff made 4-of-5 field-goal attempts and became the sixth kicker in Marshall history with four field goals in a game and the Thundering Herd beat Old Dominion 12-0 on Saturday. Verhoff connected from 33 and 26 yards in the second quarter, 30 in the third and 23 in the fourth with 10:50 remaining. His 42-yard attempt with 6:26 left was blocked. Verhoff is 12-for-17 (70.5%) kicking field goals this season. Marshall (5-4, 2-3 Sun Belt Conference) outgained Old Dominion 387-209 in total yards and held the ball for more than half the game (38:11). Cam Fancher threw for 89 yards and was intercepted twice but gained 136 yards rushing on 18 carries. Khalan Laborn ran for 139 yards on 31 carries for the Thundering Herd. Hayden Wolff threw for 198 yards for Old Dominion (3-6, 2-3). - Marshall/AP College Football

Khalan Laborn ran for 151 yards with two touchdowns, the Marshall defense did not allow a point after the first quarter, and the Thundering Herd defeated James Madison 26-12 on Saturday. Laborn has surpassed 100 yards on the ground in every game and now has 1,002 for the season. Laborn's 61-yard touchdown run in the second quarter drew Marshall within 12-9 and his 18-yard run capped the scoring in the fourth quarter. In between, Cam Fancher passed to Corey Gammage for a 57-yard touchdown and Rece Verhoff added a 38-yard field goal. Fancher completed 15 of 31 passes for 159 yards, the one touchdown and two interceptions for Marshall (4-3, 1-2 Sun Belt). On homecoming day, James Madison's Billy Atkins was 13 of 35 passing for 164 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions. Percy Agyei-Obese had 96 rushing yards for the Dukes (5-2, 3-2). - Marshall/AP College Football

Henry Colombi threw two first-half touchdown passes, Khalan Laborn ran for two scores in the second half and Marshall rolled to a 28-7 victory over FCS-member Gardner-Webb on Saturday. Colombi connected with A.J. Turner for a 24-yard touchdown and a 7-0 Marshall lead, but freshman Ty Anderson picked off a Colombi pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7 after one quarter. Marshall (3-2) took a 14-7 lead into halftime when Colombi passed to Corey Gammage for a 10-yard score with 5:48 left in the second quarter. Laborn's 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter pushed the Thundering Herd's lead to 21-7. He ended the scoring with a 78-yard run on first down in the final period. Laborn finished with a career-high 191 yards on 35 carries. Colombi completed 13 of 20 passes for 138 yards. Bailey Fisher completed just 9 of 28 passes for 114 yards with three interceptions for the Bulldogs (1-4). - AP College Football

Notre Dame fans could live with the Fighting Irish being overpowered in the fourth quarter against then-No. 2 Ohio State. Being pushed around by Marshall is a different story. Notre Dame Stadium is supposed to be a place to shake down the thunder, not where the Thundering Herd celebrate a 26-21 victory. The eighth-ranked Irish led 15-12 when Tyler Buchner ran in for a 1-yard run to open the fourth quarter Saturday, then added a 2-point conversion. It all went downhill from there for Notre Dame (0-2). Marcus Freeman is now the first Irish coach to open his career 0-3.

Freeman, the 36-year-old, first-time head coach, was asked whether his inexperience coaching was a factor in the poor start. "If it's my experience as head coach, and I don't know if that's a reason why, or the lack of execution? But it starts with me, right? It starts with me as the head coach and looking at myself and saying, ‘What do I have to do to help this football team and really look at everything we're doing?' Because the performance isn't where we needed to be," he said. Steven Gilmore returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and Khalan Labron ran for 163 yards as Marshall shocked the Irish. Gilmore, the brother of Stephon Gilmore of the Indianapolis Colts, picked off a pass by Tyler Buchner with 4:35 left, raced to the end zone and then jumped into the stands where Marshall fans were already celebrating the victory. - Marshall/AP College Football

Ethan Payne and Khalan Laborn both went over 100 yards rushing with two touchdowns each and Marshall routed FCS-member Norfolk State 55-3 on Saturday. Payne led with 113 yards on 10 carries and Laborn added 12 carries for 102 yards as the Thundering Herd piled up 380 yards on the ground. Payne and Laborn helped soften the absence of Rasheen Ali, one of the nation's top freshmen last season, who took a leave of absence last month for undisclosed reasons. Henry Colombi was 24-of-26 passing for 205 yards and Marshall finished with 612 yards total offense with 33 first downs. On defense, the Herd held the Spartans to 114 yards and five first downs. Five players scored touchdowns for Marshall, including defensive lineman Owen Porter who had a 21-yard fumble return. Despite the lopsided score, Norfolk State stuck to its ground game but netted only 30 yards on 31 carries. Quarterbacks Jaylan Adams and Otto Kuhns combined to go 6-for-14 for 84 yards. - Marshall/AP College Football

As Khalan Laborn bounced off a tackle and finished off a 32-yard touchdown run on the final play of Marshall football's Green and White Game, it was a fitting end to the spring season for the Thundering Herd's running backs. Behind Rasheen Ali, Marshall's leading rusher of over 1,400 yards from last season, there's a handful of running backs looking to be the second guy in the one-two punch at tailback. A mix of Laborn, a sixth-year transfer, redshirt freshman Anthony James and true freshmen A.J. Turner and Isaiah Gordon made their impressions last Saturday, with Laborn seeing the most action of the four. They combined to carry the ball 19 times for 104 yards, without help from Ali or Ethan Payne, neither of whom saw snaps in the Green and White Game. "They've probably grown as much as the quarterbacks," Marshall coach Charles Huff said of the group. - Charleston Gazette

  07/30/20 - RB Khalan LabornrSr/2023, Marshall, 5-09, 204 (DS#24 RB) + More +

After redshirting his freshman year, Laborn appeared in two games in 2018 before suffering a gruesome knee injury that cut his season short. He returned the next season, appearing in 10 games primarily as the backup to Cam Akers, rushing for 297 yards and four touchdowns on 63 carries. The sophomore set a career high in rushing with 69 yards against Clemson on Oct. 12 and a career high in scoring with two touchdowns against Alabama State on Nov. 16. But a violation of team rules led to his suspension for the team's regular-season finale against Florida and he didn't appear in the team's Sun Bowl game against Arizona State. Laborn was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession after a traffic stop in late 2018. He expected to compete with Texas A&M transfer Jashaun Corbin for the starting tailback job heading into fall camp. - Orlando Sentinel

Redshirt junior running back Khalan Laborn is expected to be removed from the football roster Tuesday. Laborn was dismissed from the team for "a violation of team policy," according to a FSU spokesperson. Laborn, a former five-star recruit from Virginia Beach, Va., was expected to compete for the starting running back job this season. Laborn's career at FSU has been filled with injuries and off-field incidents. He was sent home from the Independence Bowl his freshman year, and suffered a season-ending knee injury two games into his redshirt freshman season in 2018. - Tallahassee Democrat

  07/11/20 - RB Khalan LabornrSr/2023, Marshall, 5-09, 204 (DS#24 RB) + More +

Laborn is the sole scholarship FSU running back on the 2020 roster who was on the team last season. The former No. 1 all-purpose back in the 2017 recruiting class, he's been overshadowed by Akers throughout his FSU career. Now would seem to be a time for the former five-star recruit to shine. His play-making ability is among the best on the team -- look no further than his sideline-to-sideline run after catch vs. Virginia Tech in 2018 -- but he's been hindered by injuries and off-field issues during his FSU career.

In 2019, he ran for 297 yards and four touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 66 yards while backing up Akers, but he missed the final two games of the season after he was suspended for a violation of team rules. A fresh start under a new coaching staff may be just what someone like Laborn needs. He remains supremely talented and would be a big boost to the FSU offense in 2020 if he's ready to take over a big role and the responsibilities that come with it. - Times Union
