 Liam Shanahan, LSU, Player News

Do not blame LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini for this one. Yes, the defense allowed more than 500 yards for the third time this season as the Tigers lost 48-11 to unranked Auburn Saturday afternoon, but Pelini's unit blanked Auburn in the first quarter and kept LSU in the game into the second quarter. And, hey, that's improvement for that defense. It was LSU's offense, particularly its offensive line, that stunk like old smashed pumpkins in the sun. The Tigers mustered just 32 rushing yards on 27 carries. Tailback John Emery Jr. was LSU's leading rusher with 21 yards on nine carries. Tailback Tyrion Davis-Price, who rushed for 135 yards last week in a 52-24 win over South Carolina, gained zero on three carries. LSU's offensive line allowed four sacks and five hurries. "We got punched in the face," center Liam Shanahan said. "Absolutely killed. It stings. We got embarrassed on a national stage. We just never really got anything going through the entire game." - Daily Advertiser

Harvard graduate transfer Liam Shanahan has been taking snaps at center, a position of need for LSU, and Tigers coach Ed Orgeron spoke Tuesday morning as if Shanahan had a shot at being the starter this season. It's a position Shanahan didn't play at Harvard, according to the school's records, but the 6-foot-5, 310-pound Massachusetts native is now in the mix to replace two-year starter Lloyd Cushenberry, who left after his junior season for the NFL draft. Orgeron said he's heard Shanahan has been "snapping well" in the time he's spent with other players leading up to the six-week preseason plan that's set to start July 24. Orgeron said on 104.5 ESPN's "Off the Bench," he's "very impressed with the young man so far, but he's got to go through camp and get it done." "We feel that he for sure can make the calls and be a leader for us," Orgeron said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU has signed Harvard graduate transfer and offensive lineman Liam Shanahan, a source confirmed with The Advocate. The news was first reported by The Athletic. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Massachusetts native will count toward LSU's 2020 class and add depth to a Tigers offensive line that lost four starters from its national championship team. Shanahan played both guard and tackle at Harvard. In three seasons, Shanahan had 16 starts at right guard, 11 starts at right tackle and two starts at left guard. He had nine starts at right guard in 2019, one at right tackle, and he started all 10 games at right tackle in 2018. He had seven starts at right guard in 2017, with two starts at left guard. Shanahan was an All-Ivy League first team selection in 2019, and he won the team's Joseph E. Wolf Award for top interior lineman. An All-Ivy League second-team selection in 2018, Shanahan played in all of Harvard's 10 games in the last three seasons. - Baton Rouge Advocate
