Bailey Zappe capped his record-setting season in style, and Western Kentucky capped a difficult week with a bowl win. Zappe broke a pair of single-season FBS records by passing for 422 yards and six touchdowns, and Western Kentucky handed Appalachian State its first-ever bowl loss by beating the Mountaineers 59-38 in the Boca Raton Bowl on Saturday. Zappe finished the season with 5,967 yards and 62 touchdowns for the Hilltoppers (9-5).

He topped the previous FBS marks of 5,833 yards set by Texas Tech's B.J. Symons in 2003 and 60 touchdowns set by LSU's Joe Burrow in the Tigers' run to the national championship in the 2019 season. "In my opinion Bailey Zappe is the best quarterback in college football, and now he gets to say he is one of the best," Western Kentucky coach Tyson Helton said. "He'll go down in history as being one of the best, and holds two records. It's just special to be a part of that." Jerreth Sterns caught 13 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns for Western Kentucky, finishing his season with 150 catches for 1,902 yards. Mitchell Tinsley had two TD catches for the Hilltoppers and Noah Whittington needed only seven carries to rush for 150 yards, 86 of those on a third-quarter scoring run. - Western Kentucky/AP College Football

2021 ALL-CONFERENCE USA FIRST TEAM (COACHES): QB: Bailey Zappe, Gr., WKU,...For the year, Zappe is 442-of 639 passing (69.2%) for 5,545 yards, with 56 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The all-time single-season FBS yardage record is 5,833 by Texas Tech's B.J. Symons during his 14-game 2003 season, while the single-season FBS touchdown record is 60 by LSU's Joe Burrow during his 15-game 2019 campaign. A performance by Zappe of 289 passing yards and five touchdowns in the Hilltoppers' bowl game would eclipse both marks. - Western Kentucky Football

2021 CONFERENCE USA MOST VALUABLE PLAYER (COACHES): WKU QB Bailey Zappe was selected as the C-USA Most Valuable Player Award after his stellar season in Bowling Green. Zappe, a Manning Award finalist and Walter Camp Player of the Year and Davey O'Brien Award semifinalist, has had a record-smashing season for the East Division champion Hilltoppers, breaking the Conference USA and program record for touchdown passes (56) in a single-season, and is within range of potentially breaking the single-season FBS records for touchdown passes (60) and passing yardage (5,833).

There will be no competition for the starting quarterback position at Western Kentucky entering fall camp. WKU head coach Tyson Helton announced Tuesday at the team's media day at Houchens-Smith Stadium that Bailey Zappe would be the team's starting quarterback. "I think we're in a position right now where Bailey Zappe is going to be the quarterback," the third-year head coach said. "He's been here long enough - he was with us during the spring, he was with us during the summer, our staff's been able to make evaluations. I think it's better for us moving into this season having that guy in place and he knows he's the guy. I think we can go ahead and say, 'Yeah, he's going to be the starter." Zappe joined the team during the offseason as a transfer from Houston Baptist - the same program new WKU offensive coordinator Zach Kittley comes from.

WKU, which opens fall camp Wednesday, also signed receivers Jerreth and Josh Sterns and Ben Ratzlaff from HBU. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Victoria, Texas, native didn't learn he'd be the starting quarterback until Helton's announcement Tuesday at media day. "I guess I found out the same time y'all did - just now. They kind of kept it under wraps," Zappe said. "We had a great spring, great summer, I was working toward being the starter and I'm real excited to get it started. I'm grateful coach Helton gave me the starting spot." Zappe threw for 10,004 passing yards in four seasons with HBU. In the four games of the Huskies' fall 2020 schedule, Zappe completed 141 of 215 passes (65.6%) for 1,833 yards, with 15 touchdowns and one interception. - BG Daily News

Western Kentucky transfer quarterback Bailey Zappe was voted the 2020 Southland Conference Fall Player of the Year, the league announced Tuesday. Zappe played four games in the fall for his previous institution, Houston Baptist, and then announced his decision to come to WKU in December. In an abridged 2020 season, the success of HBU's air raid passing offense made headlines throughout the country. In only four games, the Victoria, Texas, native completed 141 of 215 passes (65.6%) for 1,833 yards, with 15 touchdowns and one interception.   With the majority of the FCS season getting canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic, HBU played just four games, but still put up eye-popping numbers on offense. The Huskies averaged 33.7 points per game, with three of those four games coming against FBS opponents, and averaged 459.5 yards passing per game. Zappe, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound graduate student, completed 141 of 215 passes for 1,833 yards and 15 touchdowns to just one interception. His yards passing per game were over 100 more than UCF's Dillon Gabriel, the FBS leader.

Zappe, who is more of a pocket passer but says he's been working on being able to get out of the pocket, had his signing announced Dec. 27 - the day after WKU's disappointing loss to Georgia State in the LendingTree Bowl. He entered the transfer portal after Kittley's departure from HBU, and says the coordinator was the first call he received. "Western Kentucky was always my number one," Zappe said. "I had great calls with (WKU head) coach (Tyson) Helton - I really like coach Helton, he's a heckuva coach - but I had a few other offers and I was a little bit interested, but my heart was really here at WKU and coming here and playing under coach Kittley for another year. That's the decision I made, and so far it's turned out great." - BG Daily News

The Colonels (1-3) got the ball back with 2:22 remaining but McKinney fumbled on a scramble. Zappe, who came in as the Division I passing leader with 1,453 yards and 12 touchdowns, was 35 of 46 for 380 yards.
