Caleb Hawkins ran for four touchdowns and North Texas beat Navy 31-17 on Saturday, handing the Midshipmen their first loss this season and ending their 10-game winning streak. Hawkins, a true freshman, rushed for a season-high 197 yards on 33 carries - the rest of the team netted minus-21. Freshman Drew Mestemaker, who threw for a program-record 608 yards and four touchdowns in a 54-20 win over Charlotte last week, was 19-of-24 passing for 234 yards.

Hawkins' 7-and 3-yard scores finished a pair of long North Texas (8-1, 4-1 American Conference) drives. After a failed Navy (7-1, 5-1) onside kick, Hawkins added a 14-yard score for a 21-3 lead. Hawkins' 6-yard score at the end of the third quarter came after a Quinton Hammonds interception and made it 31-17.   Caleb Hawkins' third touchdown of the game ensured North Texas' 36-22 win over South Alabama on Saturday. The Mean Green are 5-0 on the field for the first time since 1959. That's not including 1977 when North Texas began 5-0 but only after a season-opening loss to Mississippi State was later forfeited by the Bulldogs. Hawkins had 140 yards rushing on 16 carries with two scores and 78 yards receiving with a touchdown. Hawkins has seven touchdowns in two weeks after scoring four times in a 45-38 overtime win over Army last week.

His final score was a 27-yard run with two minutes remaining during which he broke multiple tackles. That came after the Jaguars (1-4) closed to within six when Kentrel Bullock scored on a 2-yard run to cap an 10-play, 87-yard drive with 6:11 remaining. Hawkins scored on a 6-yard run to give North Texas a 14-7 halftime lead then took a screen pass 68 yards early in the third quarter for a score. Drew Mestemaker was 14-of-26 passing for 234 yards and a score for the Mean Green and also ran for a touchdown. Miles Coleman also ran for a TD. Bishop Davenport was 17-of-34 passing for 195 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Jaguars. He also ran for a score. Devin Voisin had 97 yards receiving on five catches and Rod Gibbs also had a TD catch for South Alabama, which has lost four straight. - North Texas/AP College Football

Caleb Hawkins rushed for four touchdowns including the game-winner in overtime and North Texas beat Army 45-38 on Saturday in an American Conference opener. Hawkins' 3-yard score put the Mean Green in front and Army (1-2, 0-2) failed to counter after Dewayne Coleman, who took over at quarterback in the second quarter after Cale Hellums had three turnovers, left with an apparent leg injury on the Black Knights' second OT play. Hellums reentered the game and reached the UNT 9 before an incomplete fourth-down pass.

Army had a chance to win in regulation after Coleman threw a 68-yard TD pass to Brady Anderson with three minutes left and the Black Knights' recovered a fumble on the first play after a failed onside kick. Army reached the UNT 6 with a first down but had to settle for a tying field goal with nine seconds remaining. Hellums lost two fumbles and was intercepted in the first half before Coleman took over with the Black Knights trailing 21-7 midway through the second quarter. Hawkins' third TD run was a 21-yarder with nine minutes left for a 38-28 lead. He finished with 99 yards on 14 carries. Makenzie McGill II added 101 yards on 19 carries with a TD. Drew Mestemaker was 26-of-36 passing for 249 yards and a TD. Coleman was 6-of-11 passing for 101 yards and two scores and rushed for 117 yards on 23 carries and another touchdown. Hayden Reed rushed for 113 yards and a score on 23 carries and Briggs Bartosh had 99 yards including a 75-yard score. UNT is 4-0 for the first time since 2018. Army won all eight of its conference games last season. - North Texas/AP College Football
