Wisconsin quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. left the Badgers' season opener with Miami (Ohio) on Thursday after appearing to hurt his leg while making a handoff in the second quarter. School officials said in the second quarter that he had a lower-body injur y and was questionable to return. As the third quarter began, Wisconsin announced that Edwards wouldn't play the rest of the game. He started walking on the sideline before eventually heading to the locker room. Wisconsin led 3-0 at the time Edwards departed. Edwards was making his Wisconsin debut after throwing for 2,881 yards and 15 touchdowns for Maryland last season. He was rep laced by Danny O'Neil, who started 11 games for San Diego State as a freshman last season. - AP College Football

Following an injury to Taulia Tagovailoa in the fourth quarter, Billy Edwards Jr. stepped in and led a game-winning drive to lift Maryland past Indiana 38-33 on Saturday. After getting hit as he threw a pass, Tagovailoa was carted off the field with an a pparent knee injury with just over 14 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Tagovailoa had been the Terrapins' main source of offense, throwing for 270 yards with two touchdowns and running for another score. In his place, Edwards entered the ga me with Maryland down 27-24 and immediately started making plays, scrambling for 10 yards on his first touch of the day. Although the initial drive ended in a punt, Maryland quickly got the ball back after forcing an Indiana punt. A 31-yard run by Edward s got Maryland inside the Indiana 5-yard line and two plays later, Roman Hemby punched in the go-ahead score with just over five minutes left on the clock. On the ensuing Indiana possession, Connor Bazelak completed a short pass to Coby Andison but he wa s quickly met by Fa'Najae Gotay who forced a fumble that was recovered by Maryland. The Terrapins added an insurance touchdown when Edwards ran it in himself from 3 yards out. Edwards finished with no completions on three attempts but ran the ball five t imes for 53 yards and a touchdown. - Maryland/AP College Football
