  2025 SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Sam Vidlak, SFA,...Sam Vidlak orchestrated the most efficient offense in the Southland, guiding Stephen F. Austin to an undefeated conference season and a Top-8 national seed. Vidlak threw for 2,090 yards and 18 touchdowns while finishing among the national leaders in passing efficiency, yards per attempt, and completion percentage. His command of the offense elevated SFA into one of the top scoring units in the country and allowed the Lumberjacks to play balanced, controlled football all season. Vidlak becomes the first Lumberjack since Walter Payton Award Winner Jeremy Moses in 2010 to earn Southland Offensive Player of the Year, adding to his 2024 Newcomer of the Year honor. - Southland Football

  Jaylen Jenkins rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns, Sam Vidlak completed nine of his 10 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns, and Stephen F. Austin rolled to a 62-14 victory over Northwestern State in the 79th meeting between the two rivals. With the win, the Lumberjacks (10-2, 8-0 Southland Conference), ranked 13th in the FCS coaches' poll, secured the conference title outright. They clinched a share of the title, and an automatic bid to the FCS playoff, with last week's 26-15 win over Lamar. SFA took the lead early with a 79-yard punt return by Bugs Mortimer, and held a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to touchdown receptions by Derrick Bohler and Kylon Harris. Harris tallied 135 yards on just four receptions, and Bohler had 49 yards and two scores on three catches.

Richard Reese rushed for 115 yards and a score on 14 carries, as SFA rushers racked up 320 rushing yards. The Lumberjacks had 607 yards of total offense to Northwestern State's 307. Eli Anderson was 11-of-16 for 150 yards and two touchdowns for the Demons (1-11, 0-8). The winner of the rivalry game receives the largest trophy in college sports, a 7-foot-6, 320-pound log that features each school's logo as well as the results from every previous game.   Sam Vidlak threw two touchdown passes, backup quarterback Gavin Rutherford added a touchdown pass and run, and Stephen F. Austin posted a wire-to-wire 41-17 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday night. Rutherford and Jaylen Jenkins sandwiched 1-yard touchdown runs around a 30-yard field goal by Carlos Alvarado and Stephen F. Austin (7-2, 5-0 Southland Conference), ranked No. 23 in the FCS coaches' poll, led 17-0 after one quarter. Vidlak tossed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Wayland at the end of a 13-play, 96-yard drive and Alvarado added another field goal for a 27-0 advantage at halftime.

UT Rio Grande (6-3, 2-3) managed three first downs and 49 yards of offense before the break. Vidlak connected with Kylon Harris for a 6-yard score in the third quarter and Rutherford hit Wayland for a 10-yard touchdown in the fourth. Vidlak completed 25 of 32 passes for 203 yards and Rutherford added 62 yards on 6-for-10 passing.for the Lumberjacks. Eddie Lee Marburger totaled 115 yards on 16-for-24 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Vaqueros.   Sam Vidlak threw two touchdown passes to Kylon Harris, Gavin Rutherford had two short touchdown runs, and Stephen F. Austin beat East Texas A&M 31-21 on Saturday night. Vidlak opened the scoring for Stephen F. Austin (6-2, 4-0 Southland Conference) with a 13-yard touchdown toss to Harris. Ron Peace answered with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Devin Matthews and a 6-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds left to give East Texas A&M (2-6, 2-2) a 14-7 lead after one quarter. Rutherford's 1-yard touchdown run was the lone score of the second quarter and pulled the Lumberjacks even at halftime. Vidlak connected with Harris from 38 yards out for the only score of the third quarter and Stephen F. Austin led 21-14.

KJ Shankle scored on a 1-yard run for the Lions to tie it at 21-all early in the fourth quarter. Lavon Williams intercepted Vidlak and returned it 46 yards to the Lumberjacks' 13-yard line to set up the score. The Lumberjacks, ranked No. 23 in the FCS coaches poll, regained the lead 28-21 when Rutherford scored from a yard out at the end of a 12-play drive with 7:21 left to play. Carlos Alvarado made it a two-score game with a 40-yard field goal inside the final two minutes. Vidlak totaled 309 yards on 30-for-46 passing but was picked off three times. Jerrell Wimbley rushed 26 times for 124 yards. Harris caught 16 passes for 183 yards - both career highs for the senior. He connected on touchdown passes of 20, 37, and 45 yards and added a 58-yard completion that set up another score. Vidlak's second touchdown, a 37-yard strike to Derrick Bohler and the 36th of his career, pushed the senior past the 4,000-yard passing mark as a collegian.   Six different players scored first-half touchdowns in a 56-0 first half as Stephen F. Austin defeated Division II Sul Ross State 63-0 on Saturday night. Starting quarterback Sam Vidlak was 11-for-14 passing for 211 yards and two touchdowns for the Lumberjacks (1-2), before Gavin Rutherford took over and threw for 74 yards and a touchdown. Freshman JT Kitna also saw his first college action, completing one pass for 2 yards.

Anthony Williams had 74 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, Richard Reese had 66 yards and a touchdown on just four carries, including a 58-yard dash, and Jerrell Wimbley had 34 yards and two scores on seven attempts.   Sam Vidlak threw five touchdown passes in the first quarter, 10 players scored for Stephen F. Austin and the Lumberjacks routed NAIA foe North American University 77-0 in a season opener on Thursday night. SFA gained 371 yards in the first quarter and Vidlak was 7-for-7 passing for 264 yards. His five touchdowns went to Kylon Harris for 53 yards, Rohan Fluellen for 47 yards, Jordan Nabors for 61 yards, Chris Taylor for 15 yards and Blaine Green for 50 yards. The Lumberjacks scored five times on their first 11 plays and led 42-0 after one quarter. Vidlak, who formerly played at Boise State and Montana, finished 8-for-8 passing for 288 yards.

The Lumberjacks involved their running game more in the second quarter and still scored four touchdowns to lead 70-0 at halftime. They led in total offense 565 yards to 33 and 25-3 in first downs. The second half was reduced to two 5-minute quarters. Three SFA quarterbacks combined to go 14-for-15 for 383 yards with seven touchdowns. Qualan Jones had 121 yards rushing and Jaylen Jenkins scored twice on the ground. Dalton McElyea's 17-yard pass to Dax Bridges midway through the shortened fourth quarter was the only score of the second half.
