In the same week in which the Oklahoma State football program learned that three of its top five wide receivers were, in fact, transferring elsewhere, the Cowboys received a commitment from one of the top wideouts in the transfer portal. After nearly six weeks in the transfer portal, former Iowa wide receiver Arland Bruce IV, a former four-star prospect out of both Ankeny (Iowa) and Olathe North (Kansas), shared via Twitter on Saturday afternoon that he's headed to Stillwater. The 5-foot-10, 198-p ound pass catcher chose the Cowboys over offers from Tulane and Fresno State. He had 44 catches for 396 yards and four touchdowns in 25 games during his two years with the Hawkeyes. Bruce's limited action at Iowa came as a surprise after a high school ca reer that included two all-state honors at running back in his junior and senior years - and, as a sophomore, second-team all-state honors at quarterback. - Stillwater Press

Iowa football's busy off-season continued Friday when sophomore wide receiver Arland Bruce IV announced his decision to transfer via his Twitter account. Bruce becomes the fourth Iowa player to enter the NCAA transfer portal, joining quarterback Alex Pad illa, wide receiver Keagan Johnson and offensive lineman Josh Volk. On Thursday night, Iowa received its first transfer portal entry when Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara announced his intent to transfer into the program.Bruce, a former four-sta r recruit from Ankeny, totaled 44 catches for 396 yards and two touchdowns in addition to 22 rushes for 112 and four touchdowns on the ground over two seasons. He also served as a primary punt returner this season, returning 19 punts for 123 yards. In a season when Iowa's wide receivers were largely hampered by injuries, Bruce was the most consistent presence on the field. He appeared in all but one game and was the only healthy scholarship receiver available through Iowa's first two games. In that rega rd, he emerged as one of the leaders on Iowa's offense early in the season. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Arland Bruce, who started four games, became Iowa's most versatile and efficient offensive weapon despite taking the fewest snaps of the five-receiver group in 2021. Bruce (5-10, 200) shifted to multiple receiver spots and rushed 10 times for 69 yards an d three touchdowns. He also caught 25 of his 33 targets and finished with only one drop.Along with bulking up, Bruce has focused on increasing speed and sharpening cuts. Like Johnson, Bruce's focus has grown to a broader understanding of the offen se. "Last year, I was kind of just out there running routes," Bruce said. "Now I can adjust to what the corners are doing, what the safeties are doing. Timing is everything. Timing with Spencer and Alex are a lot better than they were last year as well, too. It's pretty frustrating seeing things from last year where I could have maybe scored or did something a lot better." - The Athletic

Within Iowa's offense, one of the biggest storylines last fall was the emergence of two true freshman receivers: Arland Bruce IV and Keagan Johnson. The early enrollees impressed early and began playing heavily by mid-year. Copeland said this spring that both have proven to be good players, but now it's time for them to become great. "Good versus great, that's the conversation we're always having in our room," Copeland said. "A good player does the right thing most of the time. But if you want to be a g reat player, someone that teams are always aware of, then there's certain things you have to do better. We're always focusing on that and particularly with those two young men." There's opportunity for Bruce to be a breakout, multi-dimensional weapon for Iowa, similar to Deebo Samuel of the San Francisco 49ers. He finished fourth on the Hawkeyes in receptions (25) while three of his four total touchdowns were on rushing plays. Overall, he rushed for 65 yards on 10 carries. Copeland said the next step fo r him is mastering his route-running. - Iowa City Press-Citizen
