D'Wan Mathis completed a school-record tying 35 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns, including a 53-yarder to Amad Anderson Jr. with 2:35 left, and Temple rallied past Memphis 34-31 on Saturday. Temple extended its lead to 27-23 on a 32-yard field goal with 6:16 remaining and Memphis turned it over on downs near midfield with 2:53 left. Three plays later, Anderson caught a pass behind the line of scrimmage and raced down the left sideline for a 34-23 lead.Mathis also picked up 53 yards on f our carries for Temple (3-2, 1-0 American Athletic Conference). Anderson had three catches for 108 yards. Freshman Seth Henigan was 24 for 40 for 305 yards and three touchdowns for Memphis (3-2). Calvin Austin III, ranked second nationally in receiving y ards per game (133.2), caught eight passes for 104 yards. Memphis built a three-score advantage in the first half for the second straight week, scoring the first 17 points before Temple tied it at 17 by halftime. D'Wan Mathis threw for two touchdowns to Kadas Reams, Kyle Dobbins had three short touchdown runs and Temple rolled to a 41-7 win over FCS foe Wagner on Saturday. In the first meeting between the schools, the Owls (2-2) had no trouble, although the Seaha wks (0-4) took the opening kickoff 80 yards in nine plays, going ahead on Guenson Alexis' 1-yard plunge. After punting on its first possession, Temple had two touchdowns and a field goal to lead 17-7 at the half. Alexis bulled for a pair of 1-yard scores , first capping a long drive and then a short drive set up by an interception. Temple piled up 407 yards while Wagner had just 79 after the opening drive. D'Wan Mathis has been vaunted for his ability to add a new dimension to Temple's offense. Much of the Owls' success this season will be predicated on the play of the 6-foot-6, 200-pound quarterback who transferred from Georgia. "The amount of explosive p lays that D'Wan was able to create in a short amount of time in practice just jumped off the page from the moment we got going," quarterbacks coach Jake Landry said Tuesday. "For us, it's an athletic ability where he can extend plays. That's what stuck o ut the most to us right away." Temple coach Rod Carey had originally thought during spring camp that he might not declare a starting quarterback until late summer, expecting Mathis and Re-al Mitchell to battle it out. But he named Mathis the starter in l ate April.Mathis was recruited out of Oak Park (Mich.) High School by the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa State, and Cincinnati before committing to Georgia. But he was forced to redshirt his freshman year after undergoing emergency brain surg ery to clear the fluid buildup around a cyst. The following season, he made his first collegiate start in the Bulldogs' season-opening win at Arkansas. After Jake Fromm's departure for the NFL and Jamie Newman's decision to opt out of the 2020 season, Ma this had beaten out JT Daniels to be named the Week 1 starter. He has previously said that surgery forced him to relearn to talk and to walk. The 2021 season opening football game between Temple and Rutgers has been changed from Saturday, September 4, to Thursday, September 2. This change was mutually agreed upon by both schools. The Owls will travel to Piscataway, N.J. to take on the Scarlett Knights in the first football matchup between the two school since 2013. Overall the teams have met 36 times with Rutgers holding a 21-15 advantage. The two teams were slated to meet in 2020 but the game was canceled. After a season and schedule wrecked by a global pandemic, Temple looks to get back to its winning ways in 2021. - Temple Football

There will be no persistent questions over the summer as to the new No. 1 quarterback at Temple. During a Tuesday press conference talking about spring practice which recently concluded, third-year coach Rod Carey said that redshirt freshman D'Wan Mathis , a transfer from Georgia, has earned the No. 1 spot. Redshirt sophomore Re-al Mitchell, who appeared in three games last season for Temple after transferring from Iowa State, is the No. 2 at the moment, according to Carey. Mathis replaces Anthony Russo, a three-year starter, who transferred to Michigan State. While Carey said there are position battles at several spots, he's moving forward at quarterback. "D'Wan is our No. 1, I told him that and Re-al is definitely No. 2, they definitely had the best t wo springs and it will go in that order for sure," Carey said. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

UGA football's initial 2020 starting quarterback has settled on a new home. D'Wan Mathis will transfer and continue his career at Temple, the redshirt freshman announced via Twitter Monday. "The things I've been through, the relationships that I made at UGA will forever be with me," Mathis wrote. "I will miss my brothers on this football team." Coach Kirby Smart said Monday he wanted Mathis, a redshirt freshman from Oak Park, to continue his career at Georgia, where JT Daniels has emerged as the starter. "I am excited to see his future," Smart said of Mathis. "He's going to be a really good foo tball player. We want him to stay here. There's no doubt we want him to stay here. D'Wan Mathis is officially in the NCAA transfer portal, giving other programs the ability to contact the Georgia quarterback about continuing his college football career elsewhere. The news about Mathis moving on broke Saturday night before Georgia's gam e against South Carolina when he wasn't on the trip. "He didn't want to be a distraction for the team and he was very hurt and disappointed things came out before the game," coach Kirby Smart said Monday. "That bothered him...He wanted it to come out tod ay when he entered the portal." Mathis, a redshirt freshman from Belleville, Mich,, started the season opener at Arkansas after grad transfer Jamie Newman opted out in the preseason. Mathis struggled in the game and was replaced by Stetson Bennett who he lped rally Georgia to the win.Bennett held the starting job for the next five games, but Southern Cal transfer JT Daniels replaced him against Mississippi State and has a strong hold on the job after wins the last two weeks. "D'Wan is a great quar terback and we really will miss D'Wan," defensive lineman Travon Walker said. "JT just stepped into the role at a time he really needed to and helped the team out a loud. It's really hard at the quarterback position to be able to get that chance. You've just got to take advantage of the chance that you do get." Georgia stated freshman quarterback D'Wan Mathis, but he was pulled in the second quarter after going 6-of-13 passing for 37 yards with an interception and also having some mental errors. Smart brought in Stetson Bennett, who jump-started the offense and finished the day 20-of-29 passing for 211 yards and two touchdowns. "We were on the headphones and we talked, "Smart said. "We were struggling and we didn't have a lot of rhythm. Felt like we needed to change things up. I don't know how many drives we w ere into, played five maybe six, however many it was, before we went to Stetson. I thought he would give us some energy."There are things he can do well. He is different than D'Wan. He has experience and he gave us a spark. That helped us out. He was very decisive with the ball and makes good decisions. He understands what the defense is trying to do to him. "I think getting to watch a little bit of the game helped him. Right now, going forward, we will decide how we go forward. We will go back a nd watch the tape. "Not all those things that went wrong were D'Wan's fault. I know a lot of people blamed D'Wan or whatever. But at the end of the day it is on all of us to get right. Not all of those were bad decisions. Not all of them were bad throws. He made some good throws. But we have got to get better that's for sure." Mathis, an early enrollee in January 2019, had a health scare after spring practice in 2019. He experienced severe headaches and underwent emergency surgery to have a cyst removed from his brain. Doctors allowed Mathis to return to practice on a limited basis late last season, and in May he was fully cleared for practice. "[Mathis] has been through so much," Smart said. "He's a bright-eyed, talented kid. There are a lot of guys who have confidence in D'Wan." Pittman was Georgia's offensive line coach th e previous four seasons, so he knows Mathis on a personal level. "We know what kind of arm he has," Pittman said. "But he would be maybe a little bit more of a dual threat, because he certainly can run. "He can actually fly. He's really fast, and to be h onest with you, I'm really excited if he plays against us. I'm excited for him. Because he had surgery that might not have allowed him to play. He's come a long way. Certainly we're not wanting to play against him because he's such a talented young man. But I'm certainly thrilled that he has been cleared and is ready to get his football career back on course. A wonderful kid."When Georgia's workouts were shut down in the spring because of the coronavirus pandemic, Mathis stayed in Athens to conti nue training and be supervised by the team's medical staff. Following checkups and X-rays, doctors found a brain cyst that required Mathis to undergo emergency surgery. Kirby Smart will begin his fifth Georgia season with only the fourth different starting quarterback during his time as head coach. Whether it's D'Wan Mathis or J.T. Daniels that gets the nod, Smart wasn't ready to say Tuesday evening. The choice is down to Mathis, the dual-threat redshirt freshman who has appeared to surge, and Daniels, the former five-star Southern Cal transfer, after Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman opted out two weeks ago. "As far as we can tell, it will probably be a gamet ime decision," Smart said. Georgia opens the season Sept. 26 at Arkansas. "We talk about it a lot with our players to make sure they understand where we are," he said. Hundreds of Magill Society donors and former lettermen were on hand in an otherwise cl osed third preseason scrimmage Saturday where Mathis got most of the first team snaps.
