Indiana backup quarterback Jack Tuttle announced Monday that he will transfer at the end of this season. Coach Tom Allen confirmed the news at the start of his weekly news conference, explaining the two spoke last week and that Tuttle, a team captain, wo uld remain No. 2 on the depth chart. The 23-year-old Tuttle is in his sixth college season and has one year of eligibility remaining. "We had an open, honest talk about his time here and he has a desire to want to play his final year. I appreciate that," Allen said. "He's been a great leader for us, have a lot of love and respect for Jack. He's earned two degrees here. It's a unique situation, for sure, but I think it (staying this season) speaks to his character and what we’re all about here." The Ca lifornia prep star made four starts with the Hoosiers after transferring from Utah in 2019. He replaced the injured Michael Penix in the sixth game of the eight-game 2020 season and closed out that year as the starter, then started two more games - losse s to No. 10 Michigan State and No. 5 Ohio State - last season. Tuttle has completed 95 of 170 passes for 819 yards with four touchdowns and six interceptions during his career with the Hoosiers. Indiana (3-4, 1-3 Big Ten) has lost four in a row. The anno uncement comes one week after Allen fired offensive line coach and run game coordinator Darren Hiller. - AP College Football

IU's quarterbacks combined to throw 15 interceptions in 12 games, the most by any team in the Big Ten. With Penix transferring to Washington, IU will enter fall camp with the starting quarterback job still up in the air. "The competition ahead for that p osition, that really excites me, and I'm anxious to see these guys," Allen said. "They've been working extremely hard. So, yeah, it's a full room, a competitive room. Excited to see how it's going to make each other better."Jack Tuttle and Missour i transfer Connor Bazelak are two favorites to win the job, based on their experience. Tuttle went 0-2 last season as a starter, passing for 423 yards with two TDs and five interceptions. Bazelak possesses a strong arm and an ability to make plays downfi eld, but like Tuttle, needs to cut down on mistakes. Last season at Missouri, Bazelak passed for 2,548 yards with 16 TDs and 11 interceptions, with three 300-yard games. - Herald Bulletin

Allen said the plan is for starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to be ready for the season opener Sept. 4 at Iowa. But Allen won't play Penix if he's less than 100% as he continues to rehab from a torn ACL he suffered last November. Backup quarterback Jack Tuttle got the majority of reps this spring, especially after third-string quarterback Dexter Williams went down early in spring drills with a torn ACL, which leaves IU dangerously thin at the position. Tuttle passed for 362 yards with two TDs and o ne interception last season, going 1-1 as a starter and leading the Hoosiers to a win at Wisconsin. "Whenever he's going to be called upon, he's going to be ready, and I believe that," Allen said. "It's a special thing to have, and it's important." Allen felt Tuttle improved this spring in his ability to call checks at the line scrimmage and with ball security. "Taking care of the football, when he was pressured not making a bad decision," Allen said. "I've seen him really grow in that." - Herald Bullet in

Jack Tuttle threw two touchdown passes in his first career start and Indiana's defense made a stand in the final minute as the 10th-ranked Hoosiers outlasted No. 18 Wisconsin 14-6 on Saturday. Indiana's victory snapped a 10-game skid in this series and e nabled the Hoosiers (6-1, CFP No. 12) to tie a program record with its sixth Big Ten victory of the season. Indiana also earned six Big Ten wins in 1967 and 1987. The Hoosiers hadn't beaten Wisconsin since 2002. Wisconsin (2-2, No. 16 CFP) drove deep int o Indiana territory on its final drive, but Graham Mertz's fourth-and-10 pass to Chimere Dike from the 21 was broken up by Reese Taylor in the right corner of the end zone with 46 seconds left. The Badgers drove inside Indiana's 40-yard line on fiv e possessions but had just six points to show for it. Tuttle went 13 of 22 for 130 yards with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Peyton Hendershot and a 7-yard scoring strike to Whop Philyor. The Utah transfer was starting in place of Michael Penix Jr., who tore his anterior cruciate ligament last week in a 27-11 victory at Maryland. Penix had thrown for 1,645 yards and 14 touchdowns while helping Indiana win five of its first six games. - Indiana/AP College Football

For an Indiana team that has dreams of finishing off a special season with its first Big Ten title since 1967, it's a pressure spot. But those who know Tuttle best say he has a big arm and a cool demeanor. That will be put to the test, beginning at Wisco nsin, then continuing with a rivalry game against Purdue, and then, possibly, the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis if Ohio State doesn't qualify due to not reaching six games played. "He's not a get in your face kind of guy," said Brandon Huffma n, a national recruiting editor for 247Sports who covered Tuttle's recruitment out of Mission Hills High in San Marcos, California. "He's not a loud, boisterous personality. He's not a guy that's going to go on Twitter and tweet every minute something mo tivational that somebody else wrote years ago. He's just kind of a real salt of the earth type, quiet guy who just goes about his business."The son of former IU walk-on kicker Jay Tuttle, Jack Tuttle grew up in suburban San Diego, where by his sop homore year, he was on the radar of college programs throughout the country. He was rated a top-five pro-style quarterback nationally by both Rivals and 247Sports. Alabama coach Nick Saban recruited him. So did nearby USC. But Tuttle chose Utah, based on the pipeline of quarterbacks from the San Diego area who had success there, beginning with Alex Smith. - Herald Bulletin

Redshirt sophomore Jack Tuttle made his season debut after Penix was injured and completed 5 of 5 passes for 31 yards. He played in five games last season and completed 6 of 11 passes for 34 yards. "Jack Tuttle is a special player, too," Allen said. Alth ough UW's coaches don't have much video of Tuttle with the Hoosiers, they are familiar with his skills from his days as a touted prospect at Mission Hills High School in California. UW recruited Tuttle, who signed with Utah before transferring to Indiana . "You try to do your best," UW coach Paul Chryst said of preparing for a new quarterback. "Obviously, when you don't have as much film it makes it a little bit more challenging. Yet you see enough and you know what they're trying to do offensively. "You 've just got to do your best in your preparation."UW cornerback Faion Hicks insisted the members of the defense can't slack off in preparation during the week or in focus on Saturday because of the injury to Penix. "They're still a really good off ense," he said. "He's not the only one who made plays for them. They have a good receiving group and I'm pretty sure the quarterback who steps in is going to try to make things work. "We've still got to prepare for a really good offense." - Journal Senti nel
