Tyler Friday, Ohio State, Player News

When Ohio State defensive end Tyler Friday learned he had been selected as one of the team's six captains following last Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage, it caught him off guard. "I couldn't even process it at the moment," Friday said. "I was thinking ab out practice." Three days later, the news had sunk in. "It's a great feeling," he said. The recognition came after Friday spent most of the past year rehabbing a torn anterior cruciate ligament. His extensive recovery stood out among teammates who watche d him take months to return to full strength ahead of his fifth season with the Buckeyes. "He came back grinding," sophomore defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau said. "He came back like he never left."Friday suffered his ACL injury last summer before the start of preseason training camp, a setback that kept him from stepping foot on the field during the season. He had missed a handful of games due to injuries in previous seasons, but this was his most significant battle to get back on the field. "It was very difficult," Friday said, "but I got a great team here full of brothers. Instead of one brother, I got over a hundred here at Ohio State. During the tough times, I just leaned on them and my family and keep my faith in God, and I was able to get thr ough it." Defensive line coach Larry Johnson said Friday showed leadership prior to his season-ending knee injury, but it was his attitude during the recovery process got everyone's attention. "You saw him every morning, every day, trying to get himself back," Johnson said. "That was impressive to a lot of kids. It set the bar for who he was as a young man." - Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State football will not have Tyler Friday's veteran presence on the field in 2021. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day confirmed on his Tuesday radio show that the senior defensive end suffered a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament in the offseason. Day had pr eviously said Friday was not expected to play much if at all this season. "It was a tough break for him in the preseason - kind of a freak thing, just out doing some drills on his own," Day said. "We're obviously happy that he's gonna be back for another year, but it's gonna be a long year for recovery." Friday recorded seven tackles in five games last season. He has started a few games in the past. Along with Javontae Jean-Baptiste, he would have factored into the second tier of a rotation headlined by Zach Harrison and Tyreke Smith this season. However, the emergence of Jack Sawyer as a true freshman and the arrival of J.T. Tuimoloau as the same creates an intriguing five-man rotation. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State football's young defensive ends may need to make a more immediate impact than expected. Head coach Ryan Day announced after Wednesday's first practice of the preseason that senior defensive end Tyler Friday will miss all of camp and "most" of the season. Day declined to discuss the nature of the injury, saying he had not discussed that with Friday. Friday has started in the past. He recorded seven tackles in five games last season. He projected to serve as veteran depth behind presumed starte rs Zach Harrison and Tyreke Smith. With Friday unavailable, freshmen Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau slide up higher in the rotation, along with another veteran, Javontae Jean-Baptiste. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
