Arguably the biggest news of the offseason was the return of Avery. The inside linebacker has led Louisville in tackles each of the last two seasons and hasn't missed a start in the Scott Satterfield era. With Dorian Etheridge gone, Avery's return makes sure Louisville brings back some key experience. Paired with Monty Montgomery and KJ Cloyd inside, they have a chance to be a dangerous linebacker corps with Avery as the glue. He has 252 tackles in four seasons, 171 in the last two. With his athletic a bility, experience and leadership, Avery could be looking at an All-ACC type year this season if the defense takes another step forward. I personally believe both Avery and Montgomery will be all-conference players by year's end. - Courier Journal

Louisville linebacker C.J. Avery has played 46 games in his four-year college career. In January, he decided he wanted to play at least 12 more and announced his return to Louisville, using the extra year of eligibility the NCAA granted athletes due to C OVID-19. That was terrific news for a Louisville football team already losing Dorian Etheridge at inside linebacker to the NFL Draft. Avery enters this season as the unquestioned leader of the defense. He returns after leading the team in tackles i n 2019 (93 in 13 games) and in 2020 (78 in 11 games). More than the stats, though, Avery brings a calm and focused demeanor to the field and gives the Louisville coaching staff a player it can rely on the entire game. Returning for a year also gives the Grenada, Mississippi, native a chance to reach the goals he set for himself. "I wanted to end my time here on the right note," Avery said. "I felt like coming back would be the best choice for myself and my family. I wanted to put myself in a better pos ition of trying to achieve my dreams next season." - Courier Journal

After losing a few players to the transfer portal and NFL Draft, Louisville football got some good news Friday. Standout inside linebacker C.J. Avery announced on Twitter Friday afternoon that he plans to return to Louisville for his fifth year of eligib ility. That is big news for Louisville because Avery has been one of the most influential players on the defense for years. Avery led Louisville in tackles this season with 78. He also led the team in tackles in 2019 with 93. The Grenada, Mississippi, na tive is one of the most experienced players on Louisville's defense. In four years Avery has played in 46 games tallying 252 tackles, 13.5 tackles for a loss and three interceptions. Only Etheridge played, and started, in more games than Avery coming int o this season. - Courier Journal

C.J. Avery has been writing down his goals since he was in high school. Back in November 2014, he had a list of seven, which included to sign and play Division I football. In August 2015, he had a similar list and included being named all-state. That's a practice he continues. On the ceiling of his Louisville apartment, the Grenada, Mississippi native has a list of goals he looks at every day. On it are to be an All-American and an All-ACC honoree and reach the NFL. Those haven't been accomplished, yet, but a week and a half ago, he checked a different one off: "Graduate college in three years."The night of April 29, Avery, who is back home in Mississippi currently, finished his last class of undergrad. A sense of accomplishment came over him as he stood up from the table and asked his mother, Claudette Avery, "Can I just scream right now?" "It wasn't relief because I'll keep doing school, but it felt good knowing I completed something that a lot of people haven't done," Avery said. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he won't have a graduation ceremony, but that doesn't take away from his accomplishment. Avery is now the first four-year college graduate in his household, graduating with a degree in sports administration. - Courier Journal
