  08/08/21 - QB Tate MartellrSr/2023, UNLV, 5-11, 205 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Tate Martell did not suit up on the first day of UNLV training camp, but it's only a matter of time before the high-profile transfer jumps into the team's quarterback battle. UNLV opened camp on Wednesday with a two-hour practice session, and the addition of Martell has instilled some hope around the program, even coming off an 0-6 campaign in 2020. The team kept him out of sight during the portion of Wednesday's practice that was open to the media, but he later joined the team on the field as a nonparticipant.

Head coach Marcus Arroyo said Martell, who has enrolled as a walk-on, has not yet been cleared to practice. "We had a conversation over summer a few times, and over the time we got a chance to know each other," Arroyo said. "About our backgrounds and what we were both looking for, what our culture stands for, trying to get a feel for where he's at, what he's looking for, if there was a fit." Arroyo said there is no timeline for when Martell will be cleared to play, but when it happens the fifth-year transfer should immediately enter the team's quarterback battle as a heavy favorite to win the job. Junior Justin Rogers and sophomore Doug Brumfield are currently listed as co-No. 1 QBs, with freshman Cameron Friel also competing for snaps. Martell, a former state champion and Gatorade National Player of the Year at Bishop Gorman, committed to UNLV two weeks ago after spending his first three years at Ohio State and Miami. - Las Vegas Sun

  07/29/21 - QB Tate MartellrSr/2023, UNLV, 5-11, 205 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Former Bishop Gorman star quarterback Tate Martell will play football at UNLV this season. Martell announced his decision commitment through an interview with Franchise Sports Media. A person with knowledge of the situation said that he's walking on to the team as an "athlete," though the 23-year-old told Franchise Sports Media that he had other opportunities to play elsewhere on scholarship. "Honestly, this is where I want to be and who I want to play for," Martell told Franchise Sports Media. "UNLV checked off all the boxes for me on and off of the field. But I just want to come in, grind and compete. Just put my head down and work and be a leader and a person Coach (Marcus) Arroyo, the coaching staff, and my teammates can trust and count on."

Martell guided the Gaels to three consecutive mythical national championships and concluded his high school career in 2016 with one of the most impressive resumes in prep football history. He committed verbally to Washington and Texas A&M before signing with Ohio State as one of the top quarterback recruits in the class of 2017. He redshirted in 2017 and backed up future NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins the following season. He transferred to Miami in 2019 and played sparingly behind quaterbacks Jarren Williams and N'Kosi Perry. He did not play in 2020. - Las Vegas Review Journal

Former Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell's nomadic college career has taken him back to where it all started. Per multiple reports, the Las Vegas native will next play at UNLV. Martell, who most recently played for Washington, has two years of eligibility remaining. Martell first committed to Washington as a 14-year old in 2012 - exactly nine years ago Sunday. The four-star prospect ranked No. 56 in the 2017 class per the 247 Sports composite eventually decommitted, then committed to and decommitted from Texas A&M, before choosing Ohio State. Martell played six games as a redshirt freshman behind Dwayne Haskins in 2018. He threw for 269 yards and a touchdown on 23 of 28 passing and rushed for two touchdowns. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

It appears quarterback Tate Martell's football career is not over. Martell, the 2016 Gatorade Player of the Year and former wildly popular Ohio State Buckeye before he transferred to Miami in January 2019, entered the NCAA transfer portal Wednesday. The news was first reported by 247Sports, which later reported that redshirt junior running back Robert Burns, who had only 16 carries in 2020, has also entered the portal. Martell had opted out of the 2020 football season after the NCAA allowed it because of the coronavirus pandemic. - Miami Herald

Diaz confirmed quarterback Tate Martell has opted out for the season and neither party is sure about the quarterback's role with the program moving forward. "We told Tate we'd just revisit it after the season," Diaz said, "and we'll kind of see where everything's at." The Hurricanes (2-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast) confirmed Martell is out for the season Saturday, although they did not disclose a reason. - Miami Herald

Miami fired offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dan Enos on Friday, one day after the Hurricanes were shut out by Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl and finished with a 6-7 record. Enos was with Miami for only one season, and to say it didn’t go to plan would be an understatement. The Hurricanes finished the year on a three-game losing streak, endured wildly inconsistent quarterback play and are ranked 129th - out of 130 teams - in third-down conversion percentage. Only Akron, which finished the season winless, was worse than Miami in that department. Miami converted 27.2% of its third downs, Akron converted 26.4%.

The Hurricanes announced the decision with a one-sentence statement: "The University of Miami football program announced Friday that Dan Enos has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach." The numbers did the rest of the talking. Miami is ranked 89th nationally in scoring offense, 99th in total offense, 122nd in rushing offense and 122nd in red zone offense. It used three quarterbacks in the 14-0 bowl loss, and still managed only 227 yards of offense. - AP College Football
