  Nathan Mays completed just 10 passes but four of them went for touchdowns and Joe Alessi ran for 156 yards and two scores as Youngstown State roughed up Western Illinois 59-14 on Saturday. Alessi raced 44 yards for a score to give the Penguins (5-3, 1/3 Missouri Valley Football Conference) a 7-0 lead just 1:10 into the game. The Leathernecks (0-8, 0-4) knotted the score at 7 on their first possession when Connor Sampson hit Clint Ratkovich for a 33-yard TD. Alessi scored on a 56-yard run to give Youngstown State the lead and Jermiah Braswell caught a 40-yard scoring strike from Mays and a 54-yarder from backup QB Joe Craycraft to put the Penguins up 28-7 after one quarter.

Mays sandwiched a pair of TD passes -- a 1-yarder to Christian Turner and a 39-yarder to Kendric Mallory -- around a Colten McFadden field goal for a 45-7 halftime lead. Mays' 25-yard TD toss to Miles Joiner and Braxton Chapman's 2-yard TD run stretched the Penguins' lead to 59-7 after three quarters. Sampson ended YSU's 52-point run with a 4-yard TD pass to Ratkovich in the fourth quarter. Mays completed 10 of 17 passes for 182 yards. Chapman added 62 yards and a score on 13 carries as the Penguins piled up 248 of their 524 total yards on the ground. Sampson completed 15 of 27 passes for 139 yards and two TDs.   Zaythan Hill ran nine yards for the game-winning touchdown in the final minute to give Lehigh a second-straight win and hand Colgate a sixth-straight loss, 21-14 in the Patriot League opener Saturday afternoon. Lehigh entered the game ranked 15th nationally at stopping the run, allowing an average of 90.2 yards per game. The Mountain Hawks held the Raiders to just nine net yards on the ground. Colgate scored its first touchdown on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Prince Ekwughalu. Malik Twyman carried three straight times from the Lehigh 14 to give Colgate a 14-7 lead in the second quarter.

Tyler Monaco was 16 of 28 for 231 yards passing and a 19-yard touchdown to Nate Hope to start the second quarter. Monaco scored from a yard out to tie game just before intermission. Neither team scored in the second half until Hill punched through with :33 left in the game. With nowhere to run, Grant Breneman, the preseason All-Patriot League quarterback, was 19 of 27 for 204 yards for the Raiders. The Mountain Hawks (2-3, 0-1) opened the season with losses to Saint Francis, No. 24 Villanova and No. 4 UC Davis before breaking through with a 10-3 win over Merrimack last week. Defending Patriot League champion Colgate (0-6, 0-1) opened the season with losses to Villanova, William & Mary, No. 22 Maine, Air Force and Dartmouth.   Joe Alessi had a 43-yard touchdown run and finished with 146 yards on 14 carries and Nathan Mays threw a TD pass and ran for two scores to propel Youngstown State to a 45-10 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday. Robert Morris took a 7-0 lead on its second possession of the game, marching 97 yards in six plays. Alijah Jackson did most of the damage for the Colonials (1-4). He picked up a first down with a 12-yard run on third-and-10. Jackson ran for 80 yards on the next play, setting up George Martin's 4-yard TD toss to Terence Stephens Jr. But it was all Youngstown State after that. Mays ended an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run to knot the score at 7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Penguins (4-0), ranked 20th in the FCS coaches' poll, took the lead for good on Mays' 24-yard scoring strike to Jermiah Braswell with 10:59 left before halftime. After forcing a three-and-out, Alessi had his long TD run on the Penguins' first play and after another three-and-out Jake Coates returned a punt 63 yards for a score. Colten McFadden added a 22-yard field goal on the last play of the second quarter for a 31-7 lead. Mays added a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter and Joe Craycraft scored on a 7-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for Youngstown State. The Penguins had 394 yards of offense, including 257 on the ground. Jackson finished with 140 yards rushing on 20 carries. Both of Jones' interceptions came inside the red zone. The first came with YSU leading 17-7 and Samford facing a 2nd-and-8 from the YSU 29-yard line. He intercepted the ball at the 14-yard line.
