  05/13/21 - Trey SmithrSr/2022, Wyoming, 6-0, 210 (DS#97 RB) + More +

Trey Smith can't say he ever expected this. After signing with Louisville six years ago out of Madison Central High School in Mississippi, Smith's initial hopes weren't much different than those of many other Division I football players: Three years and then off to the NFL. Even when Smith arrived at the University of Wyoming in 2019 as a graduate transfer, he expected it to be a one-year pit stop before moving on. Funny how life works. Two years later, he's still at UW as a 25-year-old running back embarking on his seventh collegiate season. He's easily the oldest player on UW's roster, and his teammates rarely pass up an opportunity to remind him of that, though Smith said he's used to the good-natured ribbing at this point. "Everything I hear, I hear my age brought up in some form or fashion, so I just embrace it and try to disburse all my wisdom to all the young guys," Smith said. "I just look at it from a positive aspect."

Smith said it hasn't always been that easy to take things in stride, particularly when it comes to pursuing his ultimate goal of continuing his family's lineage in the NFL. His father, Jimmy Smith, played 13 seasons in the league and was an All-Pro receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the late 1990s. The younger Smith admitted it was a tough pill to swallow watching younger teammates at Louisville pass him by in a shorter amount of time while he was buried on the depth chart. Following a redshirt year, he got just 82 carries in three seasons with the Cardinals before leaving for UW after the 2018 season. "I feel like I was kind of getting left behind for a while," Smith said. "That just made me more motivated." - Casper Star-Tribune

  05/09/21 - Titus SwenrJr/2023, Wyoming, 5-09, 204 (DS#33 RB) + More +

October of 2019. That's the last time Titus Swen had played in a football game. It was hard to tell Saturday. Wyoming's sophomore running back reminded his coaches, teammates and fans during the Cowboys' spring game exactly what he's capable of with the ball in his hands, showing little rust from his lengthy layoff. With UW's top two running backs, Xazavian Valladay and Trey Smith, getting a limited workload (they combined for just 10 carries), it meant a larger one for Swen, though he didn't need much of a sample size to impress. Swen got six carries and caught one pass as the Brown team's primary back. His final tally? 155 all-purpose yards. Or 22.1 yards per touch. That included a 55-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, but Swen started dazzling much earlier than that. The 5-foot-11, 202-pounder turned in the game's longest play from scrimmage during the first half when he helped his quarterback, Sean Chambers, make something out of nothing on a screen pass. - Casper Star-Tribune

  05/08/21 - Braden SmithrSr/2022, Wyoming, 5-10, 191 (DS#999 FS) + More +

Leading up to the 2019 season, Braden Smith and Rome Weber were locked in a battle to be UW's starting free safety. Weber eventually won that competition. Two years later, the two are duking it out again. This time, Smith is in the lead. "There's a battle, but I think Braden has separated himself," UW coach Craig Bohl said. Weber is back in the fold this spring after opting out last season, which left Smith to fill in as the starter last fall. Bohl and defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel have said it's taking Weber some time to get back up to speed with the defense after a lengthy layoff. "If a defensive back misses time, that's not a position where you go, 'OK, let's go. Let's just plug and play,'" Sawvel said. "From footwork to vision to everything else … there's been progress, but it takes some time." Meanwhile, Smith, who had 23 tackles and an interception last season, has seemingly picked up where he left off. Bohl said Smith has had "a couple of really good scrimmages" this spring. "Rome has done OK," Bohl said. "He's certainly improved, but right now I think there's a separation between the two." - Casper Star-Tribune

  05/08/21 - Alonzo VelazquezrSr/2022, Wyoming, 6-5, 313 (DS#999 OT) + More +

This is all too familiar for Alonzo Velazquez. Wyoming's veteran offensive tackle is working his way back from yet another injury. He knows when this one happened and to which part of his body. But how exactly the injury occurred? That's not as easy for Velazquez to pinpoint. "We were doing these walk-throughs, and it was just a weird, freak accident where I hit my shoulder weird and it just felt wrong," Velazquez said. In 2018, it was a lesion stemming from osteochondritis dissecans, or OCD, in his knee that left Velazquez baffled as to how it happened. But his most recent injury was more common: a torn labrum.

Those walk-throughs Velazquez and the rest of the Cowboys were participating in last year were part of their preparation for a season that hadn't yet been canceled in response to the coronavirus pandemic, so Velazquez said his original plan was to tough it out and put surgery off until after the season. But once the Mountain West pulled the plug on the fall season in early August, Velazquez heeded the advice of UW's training staff to undergo surgery immediately. - Casper Star-Tribune

  05/06/21 - Treyton WelchrSr/2024, Wyoming, 6-4, 241 (DS#30 TE) + More +

Treyton Welch is motivated this spring for obvious reasons. First, Wyoming's sophomore tight end wants to maintain his spot at the top of the depth chart. By all accounts, Welch, who rose to the No. 1 spot at tight end last season, has done just that. UW has yet to officially finalize a depth chart going into the summer, but Welch and freshman Parker Christensen have separated themselves at that position, UW coach Craig Bohl said. And as a more natural receiving threat than just about anybody else at the position, Welch wants to help improve a passing game that's had its share of well-documented struggles in recent years.

At 6-foot-3 and 233 pounds, Welch, a wide receiver in high school, is the kind of hybrid talent that's becoming more prevalent at the position in the modern game, possessing enough girth to hold up as an in-line blocker but also the kind of speed and athleticism that some of UW's bigger tight ends don't have to consistently stress defenses through the air. "If our number is called," Welch said of the tight ends, "we're going to go make a play." That's the expectation for Welch entering his third year in UW's program. And when it comes to what he expects, nobody has higher expectations for Welch than himself. - Casper Star-Tribune

  04/20/21 - Latrell BiblerJr/2024, Wyoming, 6-3, 300 (DS#999 C) + More +

UW not only has all five starters returning along the offensive line, but the Cowboys also kept their entire two-deep at the position intact. With much of the group healthy again, the Cowboys are moving some pieces around up front. Freshman Latrell Bible has moved back inside after starting five games at left tackle last season. Bible is listed as a center on UW's official roster but has also been getting reps at guard. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Bible was recruited to UW as an interior lineman but was bumped outside last season to provide depth after veteran tackle Alonzo Velazquez sustained a season-ending shoulder injury. Bible eventually supplanted Rudy Stofer as the starting left tackle, but with Velazquez back in the fold this spring, Bohl said the Cowboys wanted to get Bible back to his more natural spots. Bohl said Velazquez, Stofer and sophomore Frank Crum are rotating at both tackle spots. "We're really excited about what (Bible) is doing," Bohl said. "And we're excited about what we're able to do on the flanks right now." - Casper Star-Tribune

  04/17/21 - Gunner GentryrSr/2024, Wyoming, 6-3, 205 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Gunner Gentry figured to play a larger role out wide for Wyoming next season. Now the Cowboys are just hoping their junior receiver is able to return to action at some point this fall. Gentry is expected to miss "several months" after recently injuring his patellar tendon, UW coach Craig Bohl said. Bohl added Gentry is expected to fully recover from the knee injury, but exactly how long that process will take is a guess. "Any time I make these statements, sometimes I overestimate the amount of time they're going to be out, but I would think it would be doubtful that he'd be back at the first part of the fall," Bohl said. "And he may miss all of fall depending on his rehab." The younger brother of former UW standout Tanner Gentry, Gentry has just eight career receptions. Yet that's tied for the second-most among UW's returning receivers in the Cowboys' run-heavy offense. - Casper Star-Tribune

  04/10/21 - John HoylandrSr/2025, Wyoming, 5-10, 201 (DS#14 K) + More +

Turns out John Hoyland's All-America season earned him more than just postseason accolades. Wyoming's freshman kicker has been placed on scholarship, UW coach Craig Bohl announced Tuesday night following the Cowboys' first spring practice. Hoyland joined the Cowboys' program as a walk-on last year after playing his prep ball at Legacy High in Bloomfield, Colorado. "John did a great job for us, and he's been placed on scholarship," Bohl said in a statement. Join us each week for the Pokescast, a podcast about University of Wyoming athletics brought to you by the Star-Tribune. Hoyland looked like anything but a non-scholarship player in his inaugural season with the Cowboys after being thrust into the starting role at placekicker following an injury to Luke Glassock, who entered the Cowboys' pandemic-shortened season at the top of the depth chart there. Hoyland went 4-for-4 on field goals in his first collegiate game against Nevada, including a career-long 42-yarder that sent the game to overtime. That performance helped the 5-foot-10, 184-pounder go from a temporary fill-in to the heir apparent to Cooper Rothe, who finished his UW career in 2019 as the program's all-time leading scorer. - Casper Star-Tribune

  04/06/21 - Chad MumaSr/2022, Wyoming, 6-3, 237 (DS#3 ILB) + More +

After spending the 2019 season as the Cowboys' primary backup at the position, Chad Muma stepped in for Wilson and kept the production going in the middle of UW's defense. The junior led the team with 72 tackles - 28 more than the second-leading tackler, safety Esaias Gandy - and three sacks during a season that was limited to just six games because of the coronavirus pandemic. That averaged out to 11.8 stops per game, which was good for third nationally.

Muma ended the season earning first-team all-Mountain West honors and enters his second year as the Cowboys' starting middle linebacker and one of the unquestioned leaders of the defense after also being voted a team captain last season. Lining up beside him again this spring will be outside linebacker Charles Hicks, who emerged from relative obscurity in his first season as a starter to finish with 27 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and an interception. - Casper Star Tribune
