  09/10/22 - Titus SwenrJr/2023, Wyoming + More +

Titus Swen ran for three touchdowns, John Hoyland kicked four field goals and Wyoming pulled away from Northern Colorado 33-10 on Saturday. Three of Hoyland's field goals came in the first half for a 9-0 lead and the Cowboys (2-1) led throughout. Wyoming was up 16-3 after Swen capped a 75-yard drive with a 6-yard run late in the third quarter. The FCS Bears (0-2) got back into the game after Wyoming punter Clayton Stewart dropped a snap and Northern Colorado took over at the Cowboys 9. A defensive holding call kept the drive alive before the Bears scored on a "Philly Special" with quarterback Jacob Sirmon catching a TD pass from Trevis Graham to close within 16-10 early in the fourth.

But Hoyland's fourth field goal made it 19-10 and after the Bears had a fourth-down play result in a sack, Swen went 22 yards on the next play for a 16-point lead. Another Swen touchdown followed after an interception return to the Bears 3. Wyoming held Northern Colorado to 15 yards rushing. Dylan McCaffrey, son of head coach Ed McCaffrey, started at quarterback for the Bears but Sirmon took over midway through the second quarter. This was the first meeting since 2013 for the schools that are 100 miles apart. - Wyoming/AP College Football

John Hoyland kicked a 30-yard field goal in the second overtime to lift Wyoming over Tulsa 40-37 in a wild finish on Saturday. After Hoyland's make on the first possession of the second overtime, Zack Long attempted a 43-yarder but it hooked left as Wyoming (1-1) snapped a three-game losing streak in the series. With seven seconds left in regulation, Hoyland's potential game-winning 44-yard field goal hit the top of the right upright and bounced out. He made a career-best 55-yarder to tie the game 34-34 with 6:19 remaining. Each team turned the ball over inside the final two minutes of regulation. Wyoming's Titus Swen fumbled the ball five yards from scoring with 1:45 to play. Davis Brin later threw a strike to Keylon Stokes, who broke loose for 33 yards but was blindsided near midfield and fumbled the ball with 25 seconds left.

Wyoming's Andrew Peasley finished with 256 yards passing and two touchdowns. Brin completed 30 of 52 passes for a career-high 460 yards with three touchdown passes and no interceptions. Keylon Stokes, Malachai Jones, and JuanCarlos Santana each had over 100 yards receiving and a scoring catch. Stokes led the trio with 11 catches for 136 yards. The Wyoming defense accounted for two touchdowns. Ryan Marquez blocked a punt attempt and the ball was batted around and bounced back to him at the 9. He scooped it up and ran untouched into the end zone for a 24-20 lead early in the third. Brin was sacked near the Tulsa 28 and the ball rolled into the end zone where Easton Gibbs recovered on the game's second play from scrimmage. - Wyoming/AP College Football

Gunner Gentry is facing another long year in the training room instead of making plays for the Cowboys on the field. The redshirt junior wide receiver suffered a knee injury on a non-contact play in practice this week and is expected to be out for Wyoming's entire 2022 season. Gentry, the younger brother of former UW star and current Buffalo Bills wide receiver Tanner Gentry, had battled back from two knee surgeries that sidelined him last season. "It's heartbreaking," head coach Craig Bohl said after Friday's practice. "I mentioned to our football team it's an injury, he'll bounce back, and we've got to move forward as a team." Gentry tore the patellar tendon in his left knee during spring practice in 2021 and again last September. He hasn't appeared in a game for the Pokes since the 2020 season when he caught the only touchdown pass thrown by UW during the pandemic-shortened campaign. - Casper Star-Tribune

Two of the University of Wyoming's most anticipated off-season additions are looking to use their experience to boost a Cowboys pass defense that led the Mountain West last season. UW lost 2021 starters Azizi Hearn and C.J. Coldon, who landed at UCLA and Oklahoma, respectively, to the transfer portal shortly after last season ended. Fortunately for the Pokes, they snagged a couple Power Five transfers of their own that are expected to make an impact at the position, alongside highly touted returning sophomore Cam Stone. Jakorey Hawkins comes to Laramie from Ole Miss with four years of Division I experience, while Deron Harrell spent five years at Wisconsin before joining the Cowboys.

The duo believes their time going up against top-tier talent in the SEC and Big Ten has prepared them to step in and help take UW's secondary to even greater heights. "For me, I feel I learned how to really compete every single day in practice," Harrell said. "You're always competing with guys within your group, but at the same time, you're getting each other better. I really feel like that's what I took away most from it, just learning how to be a team." Added Hawkins: "It feels good to have somebody else who has been in kind of the same situation you've been in. It's kind of like a brother. If he has a bad day, I lift him up, and vice versa. It's been good having him around." Hawkins, who recorded 32 tackles, 20 solo stops, three pass deflections and two forced fumbles during his time at Ole Miss, was one of the Cowboys' top performers in spring practice. He carried this over into a strong showing in the Brown and Gold game, during which he recorded four tackles, three solo stops, one pass breakup and one interception. He also nearly came up with two additional picks during the scrimmage. - Wyoming Tribune Eagle

After going 12 of 21, with 201 yards and two touchdowns, with the first team offense in the spring game, while completing as many passes as the rest of the quarterbacks combined, it seemed pretty obvious Utah State transfer Andrew Peasley was the frontrunner to take the reins of the offense. The Cowboys still haven't made an official announcement on who the starter will be, but comments from his teammates since training camp started indicate Peasley is set to be the guy behind center to start 2022. He bulked up to around 214 pounds this summer on a heavy diet of teriyaki chicken and white rice, and believes he's at the ideal weight for him to have the best blend of strength and speed. He's spent the offseason building chemistry with his wide-outs and tight ends, but sophomore receiver Joshua Cobbs, who figures to be the Pokes' go-to receiver this fall, says this connection has come naturally since day one in Laramie. - Wyoming Tribune Eagle

The University of Wyoming was left out of the Mountain West's 2022 preseason all-conference team and awards, which were voted on by members of the media and unveiled Thursday morning. Fresno State senior quarterback Jake Haener was voted the league's preseason offensive player of the year, while San Jose State senior defensive lineman Cade Hall shared defensive player of the year honors with San Diego State defensive back Patrick McMorris. SDSU return specialist Jordan Byrd was tabbed as the conference's preseason special teams player of the year.   Andrew Peasley looked like Wyoming's next starting quarterback during the spring game. The Utah State transfer passed for 201 yards with a 67-yard touchdown to tight end Jackson Marcotte and a 35-yard touchdown to wide receiver Jaylen Sargent. UW head coach Craig Bohl did not release a post-spring depth chart. The quarterback competition between Peasley, Evan Svoboda, Hank Gibbs, Jayden Clemons and incoming freshman Caden Becker will continue throughout fall camp. One of the keys to the 2022 season will be what Peasley and the Pokes do this summer when no one is looking. "Peasley is learning our offense and is still a work in progress, but I do think he's got some maturity," Bohl said after the spring game. "He was able to be resourceful with the football. It's important he has a good summer." Peasley, a backup with the Mountain West champion Aggies, arrived on campus in January and quickly earned the respect of his new teammates by trying to lead them through winter conditioning. At Utah State the 6-2, 210-pound junior from La Grande, Oregon, ran for 510 yards and three touchdowns, including a 62-yard touchdown scamper against New Mexico in 2020. - Casper Star-Tribune

Ole Miss transfer Jakorey Hawkins was the Wyoming Cowboys' highest-rated portal addition this offseason, and he certainly lived up to the hype. UW coach Craig Bohl praised Hawkins as much as any defensive player throughout the spring, with his athleticism, Power Five experience and relationship with defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel allowing him to step seamlessly into a pass defense that led the MW last season. He recorded four tackles, three solo stops, one pass breakup and one interception in the spring game, and was in position to make two more picks. - Wyoming Tribune Eagle
