2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Chez Mellusi (Sr.), Wisconsin,...The Badgers have not seen running back Chez Mellusi (5-11, 210) at full speed since he transferred to Wisconsin last year after two seasons with Clemson. In 2021 he played early with a pulled hamstring but still started nine games until he was sidelined with an ACL injury in a win over Rutgers and missed the final 4 games ... He still finished with 815 rushing yards and 5 TDs on 173 carries (4.7 ypc.) ... also caught 7 passes for 66 yards ... had four 100-yard rushing efforts, including 3 over 140 yards ... career-high 149 rushing yards on 27 carries and a TD in win at Purdue ... had 145 yards on the ground and a score in win at Illinois ... 144 yards and a TD in win over Eastern Michigan. He says he is 100 percent for the 2022 season, so it should be interesting to watch the duo of Mellusi and Braelon Allen, who rushed for 1,268 yards in 2021 as a freshman. - Frank Cooney, Draft Scout

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Braelon Allen (So.), Wisconsin,...As a true freshman running back, Braelon Allen was an absolute revelation for a Wisconsin Badgers offense that struggled mightily early in the season. Allen helped Wisconsin reclaim their power running identity and get the Badgers back on track after a disappointing 1-3 start. It's truly hard to put into words just how important of a role he played in Wisconsin's in-season turnaround.

In total, Braelon Allen carried the ball 157 times for 1,109 yards (7.1 yards per carry) - and 12 touchdowns. Which is even more impressive when you consider that Allen began the regular season fifth on the depth chart and didn't begin receiving regular carries until October 9th against Illinois. Perhaps the most staggering statistic from Braelon Allen's breakout season is that he finished the regular season having recorded 730 yards AFTER contact. That's a per carry average of 4.68 yards after contact. Yes, you did read that correctly - over 65% of his rushing total came after contact this season - which is utterly absurd. - Badgerswire.com

Wisconsin offensive line coach Bob Bostad has lost one of the more versatile members of his unit. A UW official confirmed that Cormac Sampson, who has played center, guard and tight end, has left the program to focus on his master's degree in educational administration. Sampson, who would have been a fifth-year senior this season, has degrees in political science and philosophy. The graduate of Eau Claire Memorial High School worked at center on the No. 1 line in the spring with projected starter Joe Tippmann recovering from an unspecified injury. Sampson likely would have opened preseason camp as a reserve center or guard. He filled in at center for Tippmann in the Las Vegas Bowl and started six games and played in 33 for UW. - Journal Sentinel

The University of Wisconsin football team has lost a versatile offensive lineman. Cormac Sampson, a senior from Eau Claire, has left the program. The State Journal confirmed the news after 247Sports first reported it Tuesday. A UW official said Sampson's decision was made after spring practices. The official said Sampson will be attending graduate school at UW. Sampson was expected to be a second-team guard/center this fall after taking nearly all of the second-team center reps during spring practices. He played in 32 games, including six starts.

The Eau Claire Memorial product was moved all around the offense during his career. He started as a tight end, the position he was an All-State selection in high school, but moved to the offensive line after a redshirt season. He moved back to tight end after injuries depleted the position in 2019, then back to the offensive line the past two seasons. He played center, guard, tackle and tight end in his career, including starting at center in the Las Vegas Bowl win in December. - Wisconsin State Journal

University of Wisconsin senior safety Travian Blaylock is recovering from a torn ACL in his right knee. Blaylock was injured during a team drill in the Badgers' April 5 practice and didn't return to spring practices. A UW official confirmed Blaylock's injury Wednesday. A timeline for Blaylock's return wasn't shared, but UW defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard said in April the hope was Blaylock could return this fall. UW's fall training camp will open about four months after Blaylock suffered his injury, and the Badgers host Illinois State in the season opener Sept. 3, just under six months from the injury. Six months would be a somewhat quick turnaround time from an ACL surgery, according to estimates. - Wisconsin State Journal

UW must replace standout inside linebackers Leo Chenal and Jack Sanborn, who combined for 13 sacks, 33½ tackles for loss and 205 total tackles last season. No one among the eight inside linebackers who participated in spring ball has started a college game. When UW concluded spring practice in April, the No. 1 pairing was Tatum Grass, a former walk-on from Stoughton, and Jordan Turner. Grass finished last season with nine tackles. Turner had six, including four in the Las Vega Bowl, plus two interceptions. "I think we all are just working to become the best linebackers that we can be," Grass said during spring ball. "None of us are 6-3, 260 and pure muscle like Leo. We can't replace Leo's skill set. "But we're going to become the best version of ourselves so we can help this team." - Journal Sentinel

University of Wisconsin athletics donors have joined the name, image and likeness (NIL) arms race by forming a collective. The Varsity Collective, LLC launched Saturday with a website touting itself as the "premier destination for Wisconsin student-athletes to identify business opportunities" and "establishing the right outlet for Wisconsin Badger student-athletes to participate in NIL deals." The collective will allow individuals and businesses to pool money to facilitate NIL deals for UW athletes. Former UW quarterback Brooks Bollinger and UW grad and mega-donor Ted Kellner are quoted in the news release announcing the collective's launch.

The collective is independent from the university, but its website features logos and other UW trademarks. Use of those Images had to be secured through Badger Sports Properties, according to a UW spokesperson. The collective's charitable fund was registered with the state Tuesday and lists Milwaukee law firm Foley and Lardner as its mailing address. College athletes have been able to earn money through NIL since July 1, 2021, when the NCAA adopted an interim policy allowing such sponsorships. Collectives have been making waves over the past six months, claiming to have put together six-and seven-figure packages for athletes in exchange for appearances, social media posts and other activities. There are 68 school-specific collectives operating, according to the Business of College Sports' tracker. - Journal Sentinel

When Wisconsin opened spring practice in March, walk-on Tatum Grass was on the No. 1 defense at inside linebacker. That was by design. New inside linebackers coach Bill Sheridan set up his pairings based on the number of snaps the players got in 2021, and Grass was the leader of a young group trying to replace departed starters Leo Chenal and Jack Sanborn. Then late in the spring Sheridan shuffled his pairings to gauge how the players would respond to the changes. When UW closed spring ball April 22, Grass was still working on the No. 1 unit. That was also by design because the 6-foot-2, 234-pounder from Holmen High School was arguably the most consistent inside linebacker during the spring. - Journal Sentinel

Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard closed spring practice with two healthy safeties who had played in a college game, John Torchio and Hunter Wohler. Leonhard played five safeties last season, but Scott Nelson and Collin Wilder left to prepare for the 2022 NFL draft and Travian Blaylock suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury during spring practice. "It's a big concern of mine to not have that depth," Leonhard said during spring ball. "You're an injury away from being light. I know we have some flexibility within the corner group to help out. If we need to use that, we will. It's definitely concerning coming out of spring, the depth at the position." UW was expected to consider adding a transfer at the position and on Saturday the Badgers offered KaMo'i LaTu, who announced recently he is leaving Utah. Latu, 6-foot and 190 pounds played mostly on special teams as a freshman in 2020 and recorded four tackles. He finished last season with 19 tackles, 11 solo, and three passes broken up. - Journal Sentinel

2021 ALL-AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): QB Tanner Mordecai, SMU, Jr.,..Mordecai broke the SMU and AAC single-season passing TDs records with his 39 so far in 2021.
