  01/03/21 - Jack SanbornSr/2022, Wisconsin, 6-2, 239 (DS#10 ILB) + More +

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst secured three significant commitments for 2021 on Saturday, just three days after the Badgers capped a tumultuous 2020 season with a victory over Wake Forest in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. The commitments came from veterans - junior inside linebacker Jack Sanborn, redshirt junior tight end Jake Ferguson and redshirt junior cornerback - who announced via Twitter they are returning to UW next season. Sanborn started all seven games and led UW in tackles with 41 1/2, including four for loss. He started all 14 games as a sophomore in 2019 and led UW in tackles with 80, including nine for loss. - Journal Sentinel

Although the NCAA earlier this year gave seniors the option of returning in 2021, Wisconsin appears set to lose four defensive starters and several other key players after the Duke's Mayo Bowl. UW officials revealed Wednesday on Twitter that defensive ends Isaiahh Loudermilk and Garrett Rand, cornerback Caesar Williams, fullback Mason Stokke, offensive tackle Cole Van Lanen and safety Eric Burrell will not return next season. All are winter graduates. Burrell obtained his master's degree. Those graduates who plan to return next season are safety Collin Wilder, safety Scott Nelson, wide receiver Jack Dunn, defensive end Matt Henningsen, linebacker Mike Makalunas and reserve safety Tyler Mais. - Journal Sentinel

  12/24/20 - Tanner MordecairSr/2024, Wisconsin, 6-2, 210 (DS#28 QB) + More +

Basically as soon as Tanner Mordecai was in the transfer portal Sunday, SMU offensive coordinator Garrett Riley was in contact with him. Riley, of course, is the brother of the head coach whose program Mordecai had just left - Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley. SMU was a school he'd already had on his mind and had targeted to some extent before entering the portal. Mordecai had watched quarterback Shane Buechele rebound from losing a rotation spot at Texas to become an all-time great at SMU. For this Big 12 quarterback from Oklahoma, the blueprint was there and the fit felt right.

"SMU's just a really good spot. It made a lot of sense for me," Mordecai told The Dallas Morning News. "They have a lot of returning guys. It's right down the road from where I'm from. I like the city of Dallas. SMU offers a really good academic opportunity. Man, it really just made a lot of sense in a lot of different ways." Mordecai spent three years at Oklahoma and the past two as the backup to different starters. The four-star recruit redshirted his freshman year, but he was efficient when he did play for the Sooners, completing 50 of 70 passes. He's capable of running the ball, but it wasn't a big part of his arsenal. - Dallas Morning News

  12/23/20 - Tanner MordecairSr/2024, Wisconsin, 6-2, 210 (DS#28 QB) + More +

It appears as if SMU found its quarterback for 2021. Just four days after QB Shane Buechele declared for the NFL draft, the Mustangs have landed a likely replacement. Ex-Oklahoma quarterback Tanner Mordecai announced on Twitter that he had committed to SMU, two days after entering the transfer portal. Mordecai spent three years at Oklahoma, mostly serving as a backup to the elite QBs that came through the Sooners' system. The Waco native was 32-of-40 this season, even getting some meaningful snaps in the Red River rivalry back in October. Mordecai had other big offers coming out of high school, including opportunities to go to Georgia, Ole Miss and others. - Dallas Morning News

  12/22/20 - Tanner MordecairSr/2024, Wisconsin, 6-2, 210 (DS#28 QB) + More +

OU backup quarterback Tanner Mordecai announced Sunday that he was entering the transfer portal. "Forever grateful for my time here," Mordecai posted on Twitter. "I have now entered the transfer portal. Excited to see what God has in store for me." The move wasn't entirely surprising, given Spencer Rattler's performance this season and the addition of another five-star quarterback, Caleb Williams, in the 2021 class. "He's been a really good member of this football team," Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said of Mordecai. "I think he's looking for the opportunity to go in and be a starter somewhere. He's done really well and I think he's ready to be a starter." Mordecai has thrown for 529 yards and four touchdowns with one interception during his Sooners career. He spent the last two seasons as the backup, first behind Jalen Hurts last season and Rattler this year. - Daily Oklahoman

  12/19/20 - Collin LarshrSr/2022, Wisconsin, 5-10, 195 (DS#27 K) + More +

Collin Larsh kicked a 30-yard field goal in overtime to give Wisconsin a 20-17 victory over Minnesota in the battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe in the most-played rivalry in the FBS. Minnesota failed to score on its first possession in overtime when Anders Gelecinskyj's 36-yard field goal attempt from the left hashmark sailed just outside the left upright It was the 130th game between the programs. This season's game on Nov. 28 was canceled due to COVID-19 issues in the Gophers program. Wisconsin (3-3, 3-3 Big Ten) had lost three consecutive games, not scoring more than seven points in any of them. The Badgers entered without their two leading rushers, Jalen Berger and Nakia Watson, top receivers Danny Davis III and Kendric Pryor, and left tackle Cole Van Lanen. - AP College Football

  12/04/20 - Cole Van LanenrSr/2021, Wisconsin, 6-4, 305 (DS#21 OT) + More +

UW's starting line - tackles Tyler Beach and Cole Van Lanen, guards Logan Bruss and Jon Dietzen and center Kayden Lyles - has played in a combined 168 games and has 92 starts among them. That prior knowledge has helped during a season in which nothing is guaranteed. Seniors Van Lanen (43 games, 17 starts) and Dietzen (38, 35) are the veterans of the group and are playing next to each other on the left side of the line after splitting reps at left tackle in 2018. Van Lanen emerged as a de facto starter as Dietzen dealt with injuries that season, which helped springboard Van Lanen to a strong 2019.

"It's been awesome. Waited a long time for this opportunity to play next to him," Van Lanen said. "I feel like our personalities match fully and love playing together. I think our styles of play are very similar, so we help each other out a lot on the line. I think we're just a good duo. It's a lot of fun playing next to him. I think he enjoys playing next to me. I think we play really well together, and hopefully we continue doing that the rest of the season." - Wisconsin State Journal

  12/03/20 - *Rachad WildgooseJr/2021, Wisconsin, 5-11, 197 (DS#46 CB) + More +

UW's defense took a hit Friday when junior cornerback Rachad Wildgoose announced he was leaving the team to focus on preparing for the NFL draft. Wildgoose injured his right shoulder against Northwestern and may not have been able to play in the Badgers' remaining games this season. Chryst said he advised Wildgoose the same way he does other players facing the decision to turn pro, which is to gather as much information as possible. "Each kid ends up making a decision for different reasons and so you try to...one, you want to listen and you want to be supportive, and then two, if there's any help that you can give them to do such a thing then you want to be a resource or at least a conduit to the resources that matter most," Chryst said.

"Really a lot of these guys, you have a sense and you talk in the summertime and kind of have an idea of what their thoughts are and what they're trying to do. I think that helps you in coaching them for that year and brings it all together. After he got injured, I think he felt that the timing was right. This was something that he'd been thinking about. We'll still try to do all that we can to help him in any way that we can be useful to him." - Wisconsin State Journal

  11/26/20 - Garrett GroshekrSr/2021, Wisconsin, 5-11, 217 (DS#41 RB) + More +

Tailback Garret Groshek acknowledged he wasn't happy with his performance in the loss. Groshek led UW in rushing with 70 yards on 13 carries and added four catches for 29 yards in the opener against Illinois but did not play at Michigan after testing positive for the coronavirus. He rushed seven times for 23 yards and had four catches for 18 yards and lost a fumble against Northwestern.

Groshek said he felt in terrific physical condition in the opener but being shut down for two weeks before being able to resume physical activity in preparation for the Northwestern game affected him. "Two weeks you're told to do absolutely nothing," he explained, "and then trying to get it all back within that seven-day period. "I didn't feel like my conditioning, my cardio, was where I wanted to be, my legs, where I wanted them to be. "But that's my fault for not staying on top of that and doing more than I did just to get ready to play." - Journal Sentinel

  10/28/20 - Chase WolfrSr/2024, Wisconsin, 6-1, 195 (DS#999 QB) + More +

A second University of Wisconsin quarterback has tested positive for COVID-19. State Journal sources confirmed Tuesday that starter Graham Mertz and backup Chase Wolf have tested positive using a rapid antigen test. CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd reported Tuesday morning that Mertz's confirmatory PCR test came back positive. The status of Wolf's PCR test is not known. Big Ten Conference protocols state players who have a positive test confirmed must sit out of games for 21 days. That 21-day layoff for players who test positive is the longest among Power Five conferences. Mertz is believed to have tested positive on Saturday, Oct. 24, and the initial test begins the 21-day countdown. Assuming he has no cardiac complications and he's cleared by a cardiologist, he will miss games against Nebraska and Purdue, but could be active against Michigan on Nov. 14. - Wisconsin State Journal

  10/23/20 - *Leo ChenalJr/2022, Wisconsin, 6-3, 250 (DS#2 ILB) + More +

Looking the part has never been an issue for Leo Chenal. At 6-foot-2, 255 pounds, the sophomore inside linebacker for the University of Wisconsin football team is physically ready to assume a bigger role in the No. 14 Badgers defense. Ask his teammates and coaches, and the physical tools Chenal possesses are quick to come up. This summer while the Badgers were away from campus due to COVID-19, Chenal made waves with videos he posted on social media of him bench pressing. One video showed Chenal, who's set to make his first career start Friday when UW hosts Illinois, benching 225 pounds 40 times, and another showed him completing 18 reps at 315 pounds. For reference, at the 2020 NFL scouting combine, the highest number of bench reps of 225 pounds was 44 by offensive lineman Netane Muti; no linebacker completed more than 30 reps. "That man is crazy," senior safety Eric Burrell said of Chenal. 'He's one of the strongest guys we have on this team. He gives 110 percent every play, every play. You can look at him like, 'Golly, this dude's still going.' He's taking over (Chris Orr's) job, I think he's doing a hell of a job. I'm excited for what he has to bring this year, his first start. I think we're all excited for his opportunity and I think he'll be ready for it." - Wisconsin State Journal
