Near the beginning of his opening statement at Southeastern Conference media days, Bryan Harsin brought up one of the most dramatic storylines of the college football offseason. "I know some of you out there looking at me didn't expect me to be here at this time," Harsin said Thursday. "I'm going to dive into that here in just a second, address the gorilla in the room." The animal was Harsin's questionable job security. One season into his tenure, drama engulfed the Auburn football team, leading to an internal investigation in February by university leadership. The probe lasted a week.

"There was an inquiry," Harsin said. "It was uncomfortable. It was unfounded. It presented an opportunity for people to personally attack me, my family, and also our program. And it didn't work." Harsin survived, letting him coach a second season this fall. He'll try to prove he can move the program in the right direction. In his first season after replacing Gus Malzahan, Auburn started 6-2 before losing its last five games. But more concerning than the 6-7 record - or perhaps a cause of the team's collapse and first losing season since 2012 - Auburn experienced a shocking amount of upheaval during the offseason. Harsin replaced multiple assistants, and his first choice for a new offensive coordinator left after a month with the team. Eighteen players transferred, according to AL.com. - Baton Rouge Advocate

TJ Finley, Texas A&M transfer Zac Calzada, Oregon transfer Robby Ashford, and freshman Holden Geriner will enter fall camp hoping to emerge as the Tigers quarterback for the season-opener on Labor Day against Mercer at Jordan-Hare. "I'm excited about it," Kiesau said. Sometimes it's like, 'Oh man, you got so many, guys.' That's a good thing because let's say you got three really good ones, if at the end of the day they're all competing against each other, well that guy's going, 'Whew, that guy behind me is pretty good; I better stay sharp or stay on my game and get completions.' It's going to help everybody out in that room because I believe competition brings out the best in any position, but it'll be more evident at the quarterback position." Finley is the most experienced in the room as an Auburn QB. He took over the reins as starting quarterback for Harsin when Bo Nix got injured during the comeback win at Jordan-Hare by Mississippi State.

At times Finley flashed the skills necessary to win in the Southeastern Conference. He also struggled with accuracy, and the Tigers lost contests against South Carolina, Alabama, and the bowl game against Houston with Finley as the starter. Finley is the most familiar with what Harsin wants to do on offense. He's ready for the competition. "Life is all about competition. When you think about it, life as a whole, you're always competing for a job, you know what I'm saying? Bringing those guys in only put fire in me to get better, which I needed, especially after the season like last year," Finley said. So, we're all supportive of each other, understand what's going on, and understand we're competing for one job, so may the best man win." - Birmingham News

The East-West Shrine Bowl released its Shrine Bowl 1,000 list Wednesday with six Western Kentucky football players making the cut. Defensive back Kahlef Hailassie, defensive lineman Brodric Martin, wide receiver Jaylen Hall, quarterback Jarret Doege, kicker Brayden Narveson and offensive lineman Rusty Staats all made the cut on the initial list. The Shrine Bowl 1,000 is a list of the top 1,000 all-star game eligible players at the FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA level. Every year, about 1,000 all-star game eligible players are drafted, signed after the draft or attend a rookie mini-camp.

The Shrine Bowl 1,000 serves as a look into the scouting process and previews players from schools who are all-star game eligible who may be invited to the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl and 2023 NFL Draft class. Hailassie, Martin, Narveson and Staats all made significant contributions to WKU's successful 2021 season, which resulted in a Conference USA East Division championship and Boca Raton Bowl championship. On the defensive side of the ball, Hailassie totaled 57 tackles, including three for loss, while intercepting two passes and breaking up an additional five. Martin compiled 31 tackles with 4.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks. He also recovered one fumble. - BG Daily News

Bailey Zappe capped his record-setting season in style, and Western Kentucky capped a difficult week with a bowl win. Zappe broke a pair of single-season FBS records by passing for 422 yards and six touchdowns, and Western Kentucky handed Appalachian State its first-ever bowl loss by beating the Mountaineers 59-38 in the Boca Raton Bowl on Saturday. Zappe finished the season with 5,967 yards and 62 touchdowns for the Hilltoppers (9-5).

He topped the previous FBS marks of 5,833 yards set by Texas Tech's B.J. Symons in 2003 and 60 touchdowns set by LSU's Joe Burrow in the Tigers' run to the national championship in the 2019 season. "In my opinion Bailey Zappe is the best quarterback in college football, and now he gets to say he is one of the best," Western Kentucky coach Tyson Helton said. "He'll go down in history as being one of the best, and holds two records. It's just special to be a part of that." Jerreth Sterns caught 13 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns for Western Kentucky, finishing his season with 150 catches for 1,902 yards. Mitchell Tinsley had two TD catches for the Hilltoppers and Noah Whittington needed only seven carries to rush for 150 yards, 86 of those on a third-quarter scoring run. - Western Kentucky/AP College Football

The all-time single-season FBS yardage record is 5,833 by Texas Tech's B.J. Symons during his 14-game 2003 season, while the single-season FBS touchdown record is 60 by LSU's Joe Burrow during his 15-game 2019 campaign. A performance by Zappe of 289 passing yards and five touchdowns in the Hilltoppers' bowl game would eclipse both marks. - Western Kentucky Football
