When it comes to Auburn's quarterback competition, linebacker Wesley Steiner sees a lot of one former Auburn quarterback in Robby Ashford. "A lot like Bo Nix, Robby is a pain in the butt," Steiner said Tuesday. "I'm not gonna lie." Steiner - who's set to help fill the void left by former Auburn linebackers Zakoby McClain and Chandler Wooten - was asked about the Tigers' quarterback battle, and the comparison to Auburn's previous three-year starter was the first thing he mentioned. While working on the defensive side, it's a frustrating thing to see Ashford scramble out during practices, Steiner said, as he's difficult to contain. "It's just like, 'OK, are we doing what we need to do so we can't keep these actual yards that we don't want them to have as a defense?' And that was one thing with Bo Nix is once he gets moving, it's hard to get an angle on him because you don't expect them to be so fast. "Robby to me, he moves just as quickly. I remember at one practice, I ran right by him and I felt the wind rush past my ears after I rushed by him. So, you know, he's fast."

In three seasons at Auburn, Nix passed for 7,251 yards and 39 touchdowns, while also rushing for 859 yards and another 18 scores. After Nix entered the portal and committed to Oregon in December, Auburn and the Ducks theoretically swapped quarterbacks, as the Hoover native Ashford transferred to Auburn in January. In two seasons at Oregon, Ashford didn't see the football field, but he was a dual-sport athlete, roaming the outfield for the baseball program. Ashford was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and threw for 1,088 yards in six games as a senior at Hoover High School. - Opelika-Auburn News

Bryan Harsin has been pleased with Robby Ashford's progress since the spring, when he took home offensive MVP honors on A-Day, and it has the redshirt freshman in the thick of Auburn's quarterback competition early in fall camp. Ashford is one of four candidates for the starting job at this point of the preseason, along with junior T.J. Finley, Texas A&M transfer Zach Calzada and true freshman Holden Geriner. Ashford still has work to do to make his case for the starting role, but despite not having any in-game experience from his time at Oregon, he has impressed with how far he has come since arriving on campus in January - especially when it comes to his decision making with the ball in his hands, which Harsin noted has really stood out since the spring.

"(He's) definitely more assertive," tight end Luke Deal said. "I can tell that he's taken a lot of the load on his shoulders, whether it's good or bad, you can see that he's taking a lot of ownership, which is something you like to see, especially as offensive linemen or tight end. Usually, you kind of get used to just taking the blame because we don't mind. Nobody's looking at us as much as they're looking at QB, so that's pretty cool to see him just kind of taking a lead, taking that ownership and assertiveness." Ashford also possesses a trait that makes him stand out compared to the other contenders in the quarterback room: He's a more mobile threat behind center, and he can really make defenses pay if he can get loose. As Deal put it Tuesday, Ashford has speed to spare - "He could afford to give me some if he wanted to" - and it's impossible to ignore on the field. "He's a force when he does it, so just decision making, right? If everybody's covered, he's going to have a chance to go out there and make a play with his feet," Harsin said. "But I also think he's throwing the ball better, his decision making in the pass game." - Birmingham News

Wyoming is expecting a down year this season, but they are looking forward to good play at quarterback. Senior Hank bachmeier is consistent and plays with poise. He is one of only five returning MW signal-callers that started the majority of their team's games last season. Bachmeier didn't put up as gaudy of numbers as Utah State's Logan Bonner or Fresno State's Jake Haener, who led top-15 passing attacks last season, but his third year as a starter was plenty productive. The former four-star recruit passed for 3,079 yards and 20 touchdowns, while throwing eight interceptions and posting a 62.8% completion percentage. - Wyoming Tribune Eagle

Boise State will end the Mountain West's era of two divisions as the king of the Mountain Division, according to conference media members. The Mountain West kicked off football media days Wednesday by releasing its predicted order of finish. The preseason all-conference team will be announced Thursday morning. Boise State was picked to win its division or a conference title for the 12th year in a row. Boise State went 7-5 last fall, posting its worst record in more than a decade, and the Broncos saw their streak of four straight Mountain West championship game appearances snapped.

The Broncos return the bulk of last year's starters, though, including quarterback Hank Bachmeier, who is the favorite to win the starting job for a fourth year in a row. The senior already ranks in the top 10 at Boise State in career passing yards (6,108, No. 7) and touchdown passes (35, No. 10). He posted career highs in completions (252), passing yards (3,079) and passing touchdowns (20) last season despite playing on an injured knee. - Idaho Statesman
