He has led the Deacons in pass break-ups in each of the last two seasons, logging 15 break-ups as a junior after recording 16 as a sophomore in 2017. Bassey has two career touchdowns, scoring on a fumble return last year and on an interception return in 2016. He enters his senior season with four career interceptions and his 28 career starts are the most of any Wake Forest defensive player. After a redshirt season in 2014, he became Wake Forest's starting left tackle in 2015 and started all but one game over the next three years. Herron suffered a torn ACL in the season-opener in 2018 and is expected to return to the starting line-up in 2019 following a successful rehabilitation.   2019 PRESEASON PAYCOM JIM THORPE AWARD WATCH LIST: Essang Bassey, Wake Forest, Sr.,...Bassey, a 5-10, 190-pound senior cornerback from Columbus, Ga. (Columbus) was Wake Forest's most consistent defensive back in 2018. He has led the Deacons in pass break-ups in each of the last two seasons, logging 15 break-ups as a junior after recording 16 as a sophomore in 2017. Bassey has two career touchdowns, scoring on a fumble return last year and on an interception return in 2016.

  2019 PRESEASON BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LIST: Justin Strnad, Wake Forest,...Strnad, a 6-3, 235-pound redshirt senior inside linebacker from Palm Harbor, Fla. (East Lake), led Wake Forest with 105 tackles in 2018 while earning honorable mention All-ACC honors. He had six games of 10 or more tackles including five of the final seven contests of the season. A versatile special teams player, Strnad logged over 1,000 snaps last year and led the team in tackles six times.

His nine solo tackles in a win over Memphis in the Jared Birmingham Bowl ranks as the most-ever for a Demon Deacon in a bowl game. "Justin has really matured and grown into not only an outstanding player but a very strong leader for our program," said Clawson. "He is very deserving of this recognition from the Butkus Award." - Wake Forest Football

  2019 PRESEASON JOHN MACKEY AWARD WATCH LIST: Jack Fruedenthal, SR, Wake Forest,...Freudenthal is a 6-3, 235-pound redshirt senior tight end from Richmond, Va. (Trinity Episcopal). Originally a walk-on, Freudenthal has been a regular contributor since 2016 and became the Demon Deacons' full-time starter at tight end in 2018. His current mark of catching a touchdown pass every 3.4 receptions is the highest mark in school history for players with 10 or more career receptions. Freudenthal was Wake Forest's nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy last year, an award that goes to the nation's top player who started their career as a walk-on. (Davidson Day), rushed for 1,005 yards last season in becoming Wake Forest's first 1,000-yard rusher since 2005. Carney enters his senior season ranked 15th in school history with 1,826 career rushing yards. In 2018, he led the team with 189 carries and a 5.3 yards per carry average along with a team-high eight rushing touchdowns.
