  09/14/19 - Jamie NewmanrSr/2021, Wake Forest, 6-3, 234 (DS#10 QB) + More +

Jamie Newman came up with a pair of big plays on a clock-draining fourth-quarter drive, helping Wake Forest hold off North Carolina's comeback bid for a 24-18 win Friday night. Newman hit Scotty Washington for a 27-yard gain, then had a 4-yard scramble on third down to keep possession to help the Demon Deacons (3-0) take 5 minutes off the clock and add a field goal to a dwindling lead.

UNC (2-1) had a final drive with no timeouts with a chance for a third straight fourth-quarter comeback, but the game ended when Michael Carter didn't get out of bounds in time on a run to set up a final desperation heave from just across midfield. Wake Forest dominated the first half to lead 21-0, only to see freshman quarterback Sam Howell lead the Tar Heels on two fourth-quarter TD drives to get back in it. The win came in an unusual setting: a game between instate Atlantic Coast Conference teams that was designated as a nonconference matchup that didn't count in the league standings. The teams had agreed in 2015 to play this year and in 2021 instead of waiting until 2022 for their next ACC matchup amid the 14-team league's scheduling rotation for teams in opposite divisions. - AP College Football

Boise State moved up to No. 22 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and Amway Coaches Poll. The Broncos are 2-0 on the season with a road win at Florida State (36-31) on Aug. 31 and a home-opening victory over C-USA favorite Marshall (14-7) last Friday. Boise State has been nationally ranked in 18-consecutive seasons, the eight-longest active streak in the nation. Boise State has been ranked for at least one week in either the AP or Coaches Poll every season since 2002. Wyoming and Hawai'i, which are both also 2-0, are also receiving votes in the Amway Coaches Poll. - Mountain West Football

With Wake Forest's running game limited by Rice's defense early in Friday night's game, the Demon Deacons decided to take advantage of their size at wide receiver. Jamie Newman and Scotty Washington made sure the decision worked. Newman was 21 of 27 for 312 yards and three touchdowns, Washington had seven catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns and Wake Forest beat the Rice Owls 41-21. "I think we're pretty good at receiver and protecting well right now," Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. "When teams gang up and play the run, you have to take some shots over top. We've got some big receivers that can go up and get it."

Newman, who started 13 of 14, also rushed for 29 yards. Sage Surratt finished with six catches for 45 yards and a score, and Kenneth Walker III had 125 yards on nine rushes, including a school-record 96-yard touchdown run with 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter, for the Demon Deacons (2-0). "We had a great day throwing the ball today," Washington said. "Jamie, he laid a lot of great balls out for us as a unit." Wake outgained Rice 513 yards to 321. - AP College Football

Hank Bachmeier threw for 282 yards and a touchdown and No. 24 Boise State held its second straight opponent scoreless in the second half to grind out a 14-7 victory over Marshall on Friday night. Boise State won despite the lack of explosive offense shown in its opener last week in a 36-31 victory at Florida State. The Broncos snapped Marshall's streak of 19 victories when the Thundering Herd score first.

The Broncos' running game came to life in the second half after starting running back Robert Mahone left in the first half with an apparent right shoulder injury. George Holani finished with 103 yards on 22 carries, the first running back to eclipse the 100-yard mark against Marshall since Southern Miss's Ito Smith had 150 on Nov. 25, 2017. In his second start as a true freshman, Bachmeier was 22 of 34 with an interception and a rushing touchdown. Brenden Knox rushed for 71 yards on 10 carries to lead the Thundering Herd (1-1). They finished with 172 total yards. - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - Hank BachmeierrSr/2025, Wake Forest, 6-1, 215 (DS#37 QB) + More +

Hank Bachmeier tossed a third-quarter TD pass and Robert Mahone had a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth and Boise State rallied from an 18-point deficit to knock off Florida State 36-31 on Saturday in a game moved from Jacksonville to Tallahassee with an earlier start time due to Hurricane Dorian. Florida State lost its season opener for the third straight time. Bachmeier, a true freshman, was pounded early by Florida State's defensive front but threw for 407 yards as Boise State defeated a Power 5 team for the sixth time since the 2014 season. It was the most passing yards by a Boise State first-time starting quarterback.

James Blackman had three touchdown passes in the first half as Florida State took a 24-6 lead with 10:53 left. Blackman finished completing 23 of 33 passes for 327 yards but the Seminoles were held scoreless after halftime. His third touchdown pass, a 58-yard toss to Keyshawn Helton, put the Seminoles up 31-13 with 4:07 left in the second quarter. Bachmeier connected with Khalil Shakir on an 11-yard touchdown, Eric Sachse had a pair of field goals and Mahone then put the Broncos ahead with his plunge with 12:44 to go. - AP College Football

  08/18/19 - Jamie NewmanrSr/2021, Wake Forest, 6-3, 234 (DS#10 QB) + More +

Jamie Newman will begin the season as Wake Forest's starting quarterback. Coach Dave Clawson announced the decision Sunday to start Newman ahead of sophomore Sam Hartman. Clawson says he was confident in both quarterbacks because they both looked capable when healthy. Hartman started the first nine games of 2018 as a freshman, completing 55 percent of his passes for 1,984 yards and 16 touchdowns before suffering a season-ending leg injury. Newman took over and led the Demon Deacons to an upset at North Carolina State and a Birmingham Bowl victory over Memphis while throwing for nine TDs and completing nearly 60 percent of his throws. - AP College Football

  08/06/19 - Dayton DiemelSr/2020, Wake Forest, 5-10, 230 (DS#26 LS) + More +

2019 PRESEASON INAUGURAL PATRICK MANNELLY LONG SNAPPER AWARD WATCH LIST: Dayton Diemel, Wake Forest,...Diemel, a 5-10, 230-pound senior from Hudson, Wis., became Wake Forest's long snapper at mid-season in 2016. Since becoming the starter, Diemel has successfully handled 376 snap attempts without a single errant snap. His career total includes 118 PAT attempts, 65 field goal attempts and 193 punts.

"Dayton has done a great job for us," said special teams coach Wayne Lineburg. "He has been a very, very dependable long snapper and we're looking for him to have another outstanding year. He has become a leader on our special teams units." Diemel has been on the ACC Academic Honor Roll each of the last three years as an economics major. - Wake Forest Football

  08/03/19 - Essang BasseySr/2020, Wake Forest, 5-09, 191 (DS#23 CB) + More +

Bassey's 38 career passes defended (which combines interceptions and break-ups) is tied for the eighth-most in program history, and he's eight away from third-place Eric King. Bassey tied the single-season record in 2017 with 19 passes defended, and would need even more to reach second-place on the career list - Alphonso Smith had 61 passes defended from 2005-08, and A.J. Greene had 63 between 1985-88. There's a little more attention on Bassey from outside of the program, too: He landed on the preseason watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (best defensive player) and the Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back).

Last August, coming off a season with three interceptions and 16 pass break-ups, it seemed Bassey was snubbed from the Jim Thorpe Award. "It's cool to see. It just speaks toward the expectations I have...from people around, just being a leader and continue to contribute the best way I can on the team," Bassey said. "Expectations are high and I wouldn't have it any other way. "I mean, it's good to see your name on those lists, but you know...at the end of the day, my main focus is coming out and working, leading my team the best way I can." - Winston Salem Journal

  07/30/19 - Cade CarneySr/2020, Wake Forest, 5-10, 215 (DS#70 RB) + More +

2019 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY WATCH LIST: Cade Carney, Wake Forest, Senior, RB,...Carney is one of just 10 players in the ACC to appear on the preseason watch list. "I experience great joy when lives are positively affected as a result of efforts made and relationships built through community service," said Carney. Among Carney's community service efforts have been serving as a board member of Santa's Helper.

Carney, a 5-11, 215-pound senior running back from Advance, N.C. (Davidson Day) became the first Demon Deacon since 2005 to rush for over 1,000 yards when he posted 1,005 yards in 2018. A two-year captain, Carney enters his senior season as the 15th-ranked rusher in school history with 1,826 career yards. He has five career 100-yard rushing games including a career-best 223 yards in the 2018 regular season finale victory at Duke. - Wake Forest Football
