  11/21/20 - Hank BachmeierrSr/2025, Wake Forest, 6-1, 215 (DS#37 QB) + More +

The last time Boise State sophomore quarterback Hank Bachmeier started back-to-back weeks was in early October 2019, when he was emerging as a young star. He's expected to do that again Saturday - 13 months later - and against the same opponent that derailed his 2019 season: Hawaii. Bachmeier missed the Air Force win and BYU loss this season after testing positive for COVID-19, he told the media Tuesday. He returned last week to help the Broncos (3-1 overall, 3-0 Mountain West) beat Colorado State. "I can't control injuries. I can't control a global pandemic," Bachmeier said. "They're all things that are kind of out of my sphere of control. It stinks, but they're things that I can't control. But I can control how prepared I am."

Bachmeier went 6-0 as the starter last season before he was injured in the regular-season win against Hawaii. He missed the loss to BYU, returned to beat San Jose State and got injured again, then missed the final four regular-season games and the Mountain West title game against Hawaii. He was back in the lineup for the bowl loss to Washington - then didn't get to play for 10 months as the Broncos waited for a belated green light to compete during the pandemic. In all, Bachmeier is 9-1 as a starter, and the Broncos are 6-2 without him. - Idaho Statesman

  10/29/20 - Nick AndersenrSr/2026, Wake Forest, 5-11, 194 (DS#13 SS) + More +

Nick Andersen's moment in the spotlight continued on Tuesday night when "NBC Nightly News" highlighted his story. Andersen, a walk-on freshman, had 11 tackles and three interceptions in a victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday and earned a scholarship beginning with the spring semester. Clawson said that Andersen doesn't want the spotlight and almost turned down NBC's interview request. "I said, 'Nick, it's not too often we get to go on NBC News, so you might want to do this one," Clawson said. Clawson said that there's more to Andersen's story than just the good game. "The story isn't a walk-on with three interceptions," Clawson said. "The story is a young man that came here prepared when we lost Luke Masterson, Nazir Greer, Zion Keith and Coby Davis, here was a young man that got himself ready to play." - Winston Salem Journal

Nick Andersen, a walk-on freshman defensive back at Wake Forest who starred in Saturday's 23-16 win over Virginia Tech, was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week Award winner. This is the second time a Wake Forest player has earned this weekly honor, and the first time since Jon Abbate in 2005. Andersen, who made his second consecutive start at safety, is the first Wake Forest player with three interceptions in a game since A.J. Greene in 1987. He was also in on 11 tackles. Earlier this week Andersen was named the ACC's rookie of the week, the College Sports Madness national defensive player of the week and the Walter Camp national defensive player of the week. Andersen will also be on scholarship starting this spring after Coach Dave Clawson made that announcement to the team soon after Saturday's victory. - Winston Salem Journal

  10/27/20 - Karon PruntyrSr/2026, Wake Forest, 6-1, 182 (DS#55 CB) + More +

Earlier this week, Miles was in the middle of addressing the Jayhawks' defensive issues in the second halves of recent losses when it prompted him to transition to the subject of Prunty's coverage abilities. When Prunty, a 6-foot-1, 189-pound freshman from Portsmouth, Va., broke up a would-be touchdown pass to Kansas State receiver Malik Knowles this past Saturday it gave him six breakups on the season - currently the most among all FBS freshmen - and continued his streak of breaking up at least one pass in every game of his young career to date. "So guys that are playing for us as young players," Miles said, "really are making great contributions."

Prunty, rated by Rivals as a two-star signee in KU's 2020 recruiting class, is still in search of his first interception as a Jayhawk, but his six passes defended tie him with Alabama's Malachi Moore, North Carolina State's Shyheim Battle and Syracuse's Garrett Williams for the most among Power Five freshmen. Moore was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2020, while both Battle and Williams redshirted in 2019. Louisiana Tech's Cedric Woods, a true freshman like Prunty and Moore, leads FBS freshmen with seven passes defended in six games. As K-State showed when Will Howard threw toward Prunty's man, Knowles, early on a 30-plus yard deep shot, opponents like to test a freshman cornerback. KU senior safety Ricky Thomas said those encounters leave Prunty's teammates impressed. "I feel like he has no ceiling," Thomas said of Prunty. "I feel like he gets better every week. He's a great guy and by the time he leaves here he's going to be one of the best." - Lawrence Journal World

Anderson's third interception sealed the victory in the fourth quarter. Anderson led a Demon Deacon (3-2, 2-2 in ACC) defense that held the Hokies to a season-low point total.   10/24/20 - Hank BachmeierrSr/2025, Wake Forest, 6-1, 215 (DS#37 QB) + More +

Hank Bachmeier threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns, George Holani rushed for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Boise State defeated Utah State 42-13 Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Boise State won its home opener for the 11th straight time and hasn’t dropped a conference opener since 1999. Utah State continued its abysmal record against the Broncos, losing for the 17th time in the last 18 matchups. Despite the game taking place in an empty stadium with less atmosphere than a spring game, Boise State brought plenty of intensity on defense and sprinkled in its trademark pizzazz on offense. The Broncos held Utah State to 45 total yards in the first half, keeping Utah State quarterback Jason Shelley under constant duress. Meanwhile, Bachmeier shined in his return after an injury-mired 2019 season. He utilized his full complement of receivers, completing passes to eight different players. Khalil Shakir led the corps with seven receptions and a pair of touchdowns, including a 52-yard scoring strike. - Boise State/AP College Football

Walk-on freshman safety Nick Anderson had three interceptions, Christian Beal-Smith ran for 129 yards and Nick Sciba kicked three field goals to help Wake Forest beat No. 19 Virginia Tech 23-16 on Saturday. Anderson stopped two deep Hokies drives and the third ended their final possession. Beal-Smith set the tone for the Demon Deacons (3-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) with a 58-yard run on the game’s first series. He later added runs of 26 and 19 yards. Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman threw only 17 times, completing 12 for 110 yards. But he scrambled 9 yards for the game’s first score. Hendon Hooker threw for 223 yards and ran for another 98 for the Hokies (3-2, 3-2). They had won six of the previous seven games between the schools. Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker completed 17 of 33 passes and rushed 17 times. He connected with James Mitchell on a 39-yard TD pass. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

New offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau said improving Bachmeier's footwork will help him deliver passes on time, which will lead to fewer collisions. "He was a little all over the map last year," Kiesau told reporters. "How you play the game at quarterback is getting in a rhythm so you don't have to think about some of those fundamentals and just go play the game with your eyes downfield." Bachmeier spent plenty of time this offseason working on his own to make sure each step in his drop matches the timing of the routes his receivers are running. "All your footwork times up with a specific route concept," Bachmeier said. "Am I too slow? Am I too fast? Am I double hitching? We've been working on all those things to get the timing down."

Avoiding a sophomore slump has been on the forefront of Bachmeier's mind, but spring ball was canceled and offseason workouts were limited because of COVID-19, which left him with a little more free time than usual. He spent part of it earning the nickname "Hillbilly Hank." The Murrieta, California, native hadn't explored much of Idaho outside of Boise and he had never ridden a horse before making a trip to teammate Tyler Eiguren's family ranch in Fruitland. He had to borrow boots and a hat and didn't even own a pair of jeans before his first ride. - Idaho Statesman

  10/05/20 - Zion KeithrJr/2024, Wake Forest, 6-1, 180 (DS#999 FS) + More +

It's hard to say that after the 0-2 start the Wake Forest defense was much-maligned. Let's just say it was slightly maligned, but it came to life on Friday night. Creating four turnovers and getting an interception return for a touch-down from safety Zion Keith were big. Keith returned it 45 yards for the Deacons' second pick-six of the season. "I was just thinking don't drop this ball," Keith said about the interception that came as quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams tried to throw across the middle after scrambling to his right. Keith said he was impressed with his teammates on defense. "Coach (Lyle) Hemphill really emphasizes getting to the ball and creating those turnovers," Keith said. "We went out and were aggressive." - Winston Salem Journal

KU head coach Les Miles immediately after the loss, though, spoke optimistically when asked to assess the defense. "We have some really good kids and good players in that segment of our team," Miles said. "Karon Prunty (four tackles and a pass breakup) was a true freshman starter (at cornerback) in that game and played really lights out," Miles gave as an example. "We're excited about some of the things that are going on on that side of the ball." Junior inside linebacker Dru Prox led KU's defense with 11 total tackles, tying his career high. Another inside linebacker, senior Denzel Feaster, made a career best seven tackles. Sophomore safety Kenny Logan Jr. also made a personal best seven tackles. Yet KU's defense rarely disrupted Coastal's offensive approach. The Jayhawks only made two tackles for loss and had zero sacks. - Topeka Capital Journal

It didn't take long for Robert Jackson to realize that KU freshman cornerback Karon Prunty had a bright future. Jackson was only Prunty's head coach for one season at I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia. Jackson took over the program in the offseason, and only needed to see Prunty in a few drills to fully understand his potential. "I knew right away that he was special," Jackson told the Journal-World in a phone interview. "We knew we had a special player. I was just surprised his recruiting wasn't through the roof at that time." Jackson's prophecy proved to be true.

Prunty was listed as a starting cornerback in KU's original depth chart, which was released on Monday ahead of Saturday's season opener against Coastal Carolina. In roughly 12 months, Prunty went from an under-recruited prospect originally committed to Liberty to a true freshman starter for a Power Five program. "I'm not sure how good he thought he could be," Jackson said. "He played both sides of the ball. He ran punts and kickoffs back for touchdowns. He was one of our leading receivers. But I told him if he's going to make money that it's going to be at that defensive back position." - Lawrence Journal World

Wake Forest's defense boasts one of the best defenders in the ACC with Basham, a redshirt senior defensive end who had 11 sacks and 18 tackles for loss last season. It's been a three-year progression for Basham, from Duke Ejiofor's backup in 2017 to full-time starter in 2018. That season was marked by inconsistency, perhaps because he thought production would come easier than it did, defensive line coach Dave Cohen said. Now, Basham is the complete package. He's melded his athleticism and motor with pass-rush techniques designed to wreak havoc, and the latest step in his development was being named a captain last weeek. "What I see in him is great focus and great energy and great finish in plays, with a lot of good birthright talent," Cohen said. "I have no concern as long as he's going as hard as he is and as focused as he is." - Winston Salem Journal

2021 SENIOR BOWL WATCH LIST: Carlos Basham Jr., Wake Forest,...Basham comes into the season with 18 consecutive games with a tackle for loss, the longest streak in the country. He is the only player in the country to have a streak longer than 12 games. Last season, he recorded 11.0 sacks, the second-most ever in a season by a Deacon and the most since 1992. Basham played a key role in in the Demon Deacons clinching the Big 4 Championship, tallying 5.5 sacks over those three games. - Wake Forest Football
