  10/05/19 - Deshawn McCleaseJr/2020, Virginia Tech, 5-09, 190 (DS#43 RB) + More +

Deshawn McClease's 3-yard run with 1:03 remaining capped a wild back-and-forth final few minutes and gave Virginia Tech a 42-35 win over Miami on Saturday, in a game where the Hokies wasted a 28-point lead. Dalton Keene caught three touchdown passes for the Hokies (3-2, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who went up 28-0 in the first half and led 35-14 midway through the fourth quarter. That's before Miami scored three touchdowns in less than four minutes to tie the game - oddly going for a two-point conversion after the second of those scores, then having kicker Bubba Baxa miss an extra point after Deejay Dallas' 62-yard run with 3:16 left tied the game.

But the Hokies needed only five plays to go 63 yards to take the lead. McClease's 3-yard run capped the drive, with Keene's 26-yard catch on third down putting the Hokies on the doorstep. Miami's final drive got to the Virginia Tech 10 with 5 seconds left, but N'Kosi Perry - who was brilliant in relief for the Hurricanes, throwing for a career-best 422 yards and a career-high-tying four touchdowns - had his final two throws to the end zone get knocked away. The Hurricanes lost despite outgaining the Hokies 563-337. Jeff Thomas had two touchdown catches and 124 receiving yards for Miami, and Brevin Jordan had a TD grab to go along with 136 receiving yards. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

First, a coaching change four games into the season and now a couple of Rutgers players look like they have called it a season as well. In order to remain eligible to redshirt, quarterback Art Sitkowski and running back Raheem Blackshear asked Rutgers interim coach Nunzio Campanile to not play against Maryland on Saturday. By not playing a fifth game, the two can take advantage of an NCAA rule implemented last year that allows players to compete in four games while still being able to preserve a year of eligibility. "Am I disappointed by it? Incredibly. Do I understand it? I guess so. I guess that's the way the world is now," Campanile said after Rutgers lost 48-7. "I think that this is a game about your team, you know and it's about sacrificing personal accomplishment for the success of the team. But that's the world they live in and they have got a lot of people telling them, you know, worry about you, worry about you. I get it."

Campanile was elevated to interim coach after Chris Ash was fired four games into his fourth season with the Scarlet Knights (1-4, 0-3 Big Ten) last Sunday. Campanile announced the Sitkowski news after Thursday's practice. Blackshear's decision came later. Campanile said he could see Sitkowski (three games played) playing again this season, but he does not foresee Blackshear seeing the field again. It is unclear Sitkowski and Blackshear plan to transfer or stay at Rutgers. - AP College Football

  09/14/19 - Tre TurnerSr/2022, Virginia Tech, 6-1, 184 (DS#25 WR) + More +

Tre Turner scored second half touchdowns rushing and receiving, helping Virginia Tech rally to a 24-17 victory over Furman on Saturday. The Hokies (2-1) trailed 14-3 at halftime, but scored on their first two possessions of the second half to grab the lead. Turner's 29-yard touchdown run with 5:04 remaining sealed the win. "I told the team at halftime, 'We're down by 11 points, and we have control over how this goes,'" Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente said. "We can hang our heads and sulk, or we can stand up and can go compete and do our best to rectify what happened in the first half. I don't know that we wholly rectified it, but we at least found a way to get it done."

Virginia Tech tailback Keshawn King, making his first collegiate start, rushed for 119 yards. His 54-yard run on the second play of the second half to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by James Mitchell that cut the Furman lead to 14-10. A fumble by Furman's Devin Wynn on the ensuing possession was costly, with the Hokies converting on Ryan Willis' 2-yard touchdown pass to Turner with 8:12 left in the third. That score put Virginia Tech in the lead for good. - AP College Football
