The only other time a Utah State quarterback was selected in the first round of the NFL draft, he lasted 16 seasons in the league, started 66 games and threw for 12,896 yards and 84 touchdowns. Jordan Love is hopeful to embark on his own lengthy run in the NFL and he took his first step Thursday night by being scooped up by Green Bay Packers in the opening round of the 2020 NFL draft. Love, who was taken 26th overall, joins Bill Munson - the No. 7 overall pick in 1964 - as the only USU signal callers to hear their names called in the first round of this annual event. "It was one of those things where he was the best player left and, again, we're excited to get him," said Brian Gutekunst, Green Bay's general manager, in a conference call. "We think he has a really good future in this league and he's coming from a place where he's done some really good things, but he has a lot to learn too. And I think we're a very good fit for his development."

The Packers originally had the 30th pick, but traded up to select Love. Green Bay's starting quarterback is future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers, who is a 15-year veteran, eight-time Pro-Bowler and two-time NFL MVP. Led by the 36-year-old Rodgers, the Packers went 13-3 last season and lost to San Francisco in the NFC championship game. "For me, I was just hoping to (get drafted)," Love said in a conference call. "That was my goal for the first part of this, just make it and figure out how to handle that wherever I go. But being in this situation, I would say that this is a really good situation to be in - not being thrown out there (immediately). I'm behind one of the great quarterbacks of the league, so just being able to sit behind him and learn, what's better than that? So I think this is going to be a really good situation for me." - Herald Journal Tribune

For the third straight draft as general manager, Brian Gutekunst made a trade in the first round, and this time he drafted a quarterback. The Packers traded their fourth-round pick (No. 136 overall) to Miami to move up four spots, from No. 30 to No. 26, to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love on Thursday night. Love (6-4, 224) is a potential QB of the future who is known for a strong arm and a lot of ability with his feet. He's a native of Bakersfield, Calif., who took over as Utah State's starting QB in 2017, when he started six games. He had one year of college eligibility remaining but decided to enter the draft. - Packers.com

Love figures to be the only quarterback whose value may potentially match the Saints availability at No. 24, and he is something of a polarizing prospect. When it comes to physical traits, Love fits the bill. He is big (6-foot-3, 224 pounds); he can move (4.74-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine); and he possesses tantalizing arm strength that is evident in his powerful, loose delivery. The reasons Love may be there when the Saints pick at No. 24: He played against mid-major competition at Utah State and did not flash against superior opponents, throwing two touchdowns against four interceptions in three games against ranked teams last season. In general, Love turned over the ball too often last season, throwing 17 interceptions and losing a pair of fumbles. New Orleans could offer an ideal situation for a player like Love, giving him an opportunity to learn and grow for a year (if not more) under Brees. Then again, the Saints already have a quarterback they have been developing behind Brees in Hill, so selecting a quarterback with their top pick does not feel like the play here. - Times-Picayune

2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: Jordan Love, QB, Utah State,...Love earned honorable mention all-Mountain West honors this past season as he was 293-of-473 (.619) passing for 3,402 yards with 20 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. For his career, Love set school records with 9,003 yards of total offense, 12 career 300-yard passing games and four completions of at least 80 yards.   Jalen Hurts and Shea Patterson started for two Power 5 programs, Justin Herbert passed for 10,000-plus yards for another and Jordan Love became a highly rated prospect without playing for one. The Senior Bowl quarterbacks followed different paths to potential NFL careers, but they started this week on a more even playing field ahead of Saturday's game. All had to get familiar with new receivers and new, albeit vanilla, offenses. They had three practices and the game to separate themselves before the combine and private team visits.

None were more prolific passers in their careers than Herbert, who passed for 10,541 yards and 95 touchdowns in his career. Utah State's Love is also regarded as a potential first-round pick. He threw 20 touchdown passes last season but was intercepted 17 times, something he's going to have to clean up for the NFL. "Poor decisions by me trying to force the ball down the field too much and trying to do too much in certain situations," Love said. "Every interception for me, that's a learning moment. Obviously I had 17 learning moments last season." - AP College Football

A judge on Thursday dismissed the marijuana possession charge filed against former Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. Four USU athletes, including Love, were cited for the misdemeanor last month after Logan police responded to a complaint at a housing complex near the campus.   Three football players with the Utah State University are being charged with possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor. Police responded to call near midnight on Saturday. The police had received a tip that some USU students were suspected of smoking marijuana. The smell of marijuana greeted the police on their arrival. Jordan A. Love, Sean Lewis Carter, and Gordon Maurice Bright were cited for possessing marijuana. Possession of a controlled substance of this type is a class B misdemeanor. A track and field athlete with USU, Elani Rice, was also arrested on the same charge.

Assistant Logan City Police Chief Jeff Simmons says officers did not find any drugs or drug paraphernalia at the scene. The police had probable cause, however, because of the smell of marijuana inside and outside. Officers asked suspects for consent to do a drug test. The suspects said no to the drug test, Simmons says. The police called a judge for a warrant. The warrant was issued and the suspects were drug tested on scene. The suspects tested positive for marijuana. The suspects were cited and released. - Fox 13 News, Salt Lake City
