SEPT 30/WEEK 5 PAC-12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Francis Bernard, Sr., LB, Utah (Herriman, Utah),...Senior Francis Bernard was a brick wall in Utah's 38-13 win against Washington State, finishing with a game-high 12 tackles and an interception...Washington State entered the game leading the country in passing yards per game (499.5), was second in total offense (605.2) and fifth in scoring (52.8) with the Utes holding the Cougars to 252 passing yards, 313 total yards on offense and just 13 points. It was also the fifth straight game that the Utes have held an opponent to under 100 yards rushing.

His 12 tackles were good for his second double-digit tackle game of the season and was the second time he has led the team in tackles this year. His interception return for 22 yards in the fourth quarter was his second pick of the season and sixth of his career (3 at Utah, 3 at BYU)...Was an integral part in holding Washington State to just a field goal in the second quarter when he made a huge stop for no gain on a first-and-goal...His interception came with 5:36 remaining in the game after Utah was forced to punt for the first time, leading 24-13. Bernard picked off the WSU quarterback on the first play of their drive, returning it 22 yards to the WSU 35, eventually leading to Utah's final touchdown of the game.   09/29/19 - Tyler HuntleySr/2020, Utah, 6-1, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

A week after limping off the Los Angeles Coliseum field defeated and hurt, Tyler Huntley felt as if he was walking on air as he skipped off the wet turf at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Huntley, who was rumored to be a game-time decision, passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more, powering No. 19 Utah over Washington State 38-13 in the rain on Saturday night. Meanwhile, WSU coach Mike Leach was more focused on his own team's deficiencies than any of Huntley's brilliance. "It's difficult to say how tough Utah is because they had token resistance on both of sides of the ball from us. We're a very soft team...fat, dumb, happy, and entitled," Leach said.

Huntley completed 21 of 30 passes for 334 yards. He didn't attempt a pass in the fourth quarter as Utah (4-1 overall, 1-1 Pac-12) went conservative to claim its first win against the Cougars (3-2, 0-2) since 2012. "I feel as confident as I ever have, but everyone around me played well, the offensive line, the receivers and the defense. We were rolling," said Huntley, who had runs of 15 and 20 yards. Anthony Gordon may have set a conference-record nine touchdown passes last week, but it was Huntley who stood out from the get-go. He completed eight of his first 10 passes for two TDs, notwithstanding a wide-open drop in the end zone. - Utah/AP College Football

  09/14/19 - Tyler HuntleySr/2020, Utah, 6-1, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Tyler Huntley threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns and Zach Moss ran for 106 yards and another score in No. 11 Utah's 31-0 victory over Idaho State on Saturday. In the first quarter, Moss passed Tony Lindsay for second place on Utah's career rushing yards list. His 1-yard scoring plunge later in the quarter moved him into the No. 2 spot by himself in career rushing touchdowns at 27. On just 10 carries, Moss also recorded his 13th 100-yard rushing performance with 10:05 still left in the second quarter. Huntley completed 15 of 19 passes before leaving in the third quarter as Utah moved to 3-0 for the fifth time in the last six seasons.

Through the first two games, Utah didn't throw many long passes, but Huntley aired it out on his third pass - an 82-yard TD strike to Bryan Thompson that traveled 55 yards in the air. On Utah's next possession, Huntley connected on a 60-yard pass to Brant Kuithe for another score. The lone first-half highlight for the Bengals was stopping the Utes on fourth down at the 1 when Huntley mishandled the snap on a sneak attempt. Utah was the only team in the FBS that had yet to commit a turnover or allow a sack this season until Britain Covey lost a fumble with 9:46 to play. The Utes have won all eight games they've played against the Bengals and the closest game was 24-0 in 1944. - Utah/AP College Football

Tyler Huntley passed for one touchdown and ran for another as No. 13 Utah held Northern Illinois to 69 yards in the second half and beat the Huskies 35-17 on Saturday. After a shaky first half, the Utah defense clamped down on the Huskies with an effective pass rush, an interception and a fourth-down stop. "We didn't play our best football defensively in that first half. Offensive, however, we did. We played very well form start to finish. I thought Tyler was outstanding," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. Huntley finished 14 for 19 for 214 yards and ran for 38 yards, without a sack for second straight game. "The coaches are asking more of me," the senior quarterback said. "Every time we come to the line I am ready to get us into a better play for the offense to execute. I take great pride in putting us int he best position." - AP College Football

  08/30/19 - Zack MossSr/2020, Utah, 5-09, 223 (DS#7 RB) + More +

Utah's defense picked up where it left off last season. BYU paid a steep price for it. The No. 14 Utes scored three touchdowns off three BYU turnovers to pull away for a 30-12 victory on Thursday night in the opener for both teams. Utah left no doubt about how strong its defense could be this season. Over the final 30 minutes, the Cougars gained just 104 yards on 18 total plays. "We heard all the time about how they had a great offense," safety Julian Blackmon said. "They have a great team for sure, but we know that man-for-man we're the better team. So at the end of the day, we just wanted to come out and prove that."

Utah's defense did its part, and Zack Moss highlighted the offensive effort. Moss ran for 181 yards and a touchdown to help the Utes (1-0) earn their ninth straight victory in the 100th game in the Holy War rivalry. The senior suffered a hand injury in fall camp and wore a protective splint after the game. It didn't seem to limit it him at all. Moss propelled the offense after halftime by gashing the Cougars for a series of big runs. He averaged 6.2 yards on 29 carries. The defense took care of the rest. - AP College Football

  08/06/19 - Zack MossSr/2020, Utah, 5-09, 223 (DS#7 RB) + More +

After posting back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, Zack Moss appeared primed for a jump to the NFL. He turned more than a few heads when he chose to return to Utah for his senior season. The decision felt like a simple one for Moss. He wanted to be the first in his family to graduate college. The 5-foot-10 running back also believed he had some unfinished business on the field.

"The only thing I'm worrying about is going out and having a successful season with my team and trying to get this Pac-12 championship down and sealed for us," Moss told reporters after the Utes opened their fall camp. Utah has graduated from underdog to the preseason pick to win the Pac-12 title. Moss is helping to drive those expectations. The senior ran for 1,096 yards and 11 touchdowns last season before missing Utah's final five games with a knee injury. - AP College Football

  08/03/19 - Tyler HuntleySr/2020, Utah, 6-1, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley received quite a compliment on the opening day of fall camp. It came from offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig. "I'm real pleased with Tyler Huntley. He's a football fanatic and works very hard at it. He did a super job over the summer with his strength and conditioning and then studying the game," said Ludwig. "I think Tyler is putting himself in position to play the best football of his career."

Huntley enters his senior year with 19 career starts, leading the Utes to a 12-7 mark. He's played in 23 games overall and has racked up 5,115 yards of total offense - 4,259 passing and 856 rushing. The numbers, though, don't tell the whole story about Huntley. Ludwig was excited about what he saw on tape after returning as Utah's offensive coordinator in January after more than a decade away and following stints at California, San Diego State, Wisconsin and Vanderbilt. He liked the things Huntley exhibited on the field. - Deseret News

  07/31/19 - Manny BowenrSr/2020, Utah, 6-1, 235 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Utah linebacker Manny Bowen, a highly touted graduate transfer from Penn State, has reportedly decided to step away from football. UteZone.com is reporting that Bowen met with Utah coach Kyle Whittingham about his decision and confirmed the news through multiple sources. Paul Kirk, Utah's associate athletics director for strategic communications, was unable to confirm the reports. However, he said that Whittingham is scheduled to have a media availability after the Utes open fall camp Wednesday afternoon.

Bowen, who made 134 tackles over 35 games at Penn State, participated in spring ball and was projected to join BYU transfer Francis Bernard as one of Utah's starting linebackers this season. Sophomore Devin Lloyd is likely to fill the void. Stanford transfer Sione Lund, a sophomore, is the other linebacker on Utah's pre-fall two-deep depth chart. - Deseret News
