  11/07/21 - Cole BeckerSr/2025, Utah, 6-3, 235 (DS#16 K) + More +

Cole Becker was more impressed with his counterpart's big field goal than he was with his own game-winner in double overtime. Oregon State kicker Everett Hayes missed a 38-yard field goal in the second overtime after nailing a school record 60-yarder at the end of regulation, and Becker's 43-yarder gave Colorado a 37-34 win over the Beavers on Saturday night. "That's the moment all young kickers dream about," said Becker, a freshman, after navigating his way through the homecoming crowd that rushed the field when his last field goal sailed high through the uprights. But what about Hayes' 60-yarder, which is the longest in the FBS this season, the longest in Oregon State history and tied for the longest ever at Folsom Field. "That was incredible," Becker said. "I think, if I'm right, he hadn't hit 50-plus in his career. When he lined up for 60, I was like no shot. I'm standing on the bench, it was good from 65, and I was like, ‘That was a kick!'" Colorado (3-6, 2-4 Pac-12) won for the first time in four multi-overtime games in the program's history and the Buffaloes denied bowl eligibility for Oregon State (5-4, 3-3), which remains in search of its first six-win season since 2013.

The teams exchanged touchdowns in the first overtime with Brendon Lewis scoring on a 9-yard quarterback keeper for Colorado and running back B.J. Baylor snaring a high direct snap with his left hand and trotting into the end zone. Baylor, the conference's leading rusher, gained 98 yards on 22 carries but the Buffaloes were pleased because they were without their top tackler in injured linebacker Nate Landham and several others stepped up. Colorado actually outgained the Beavers on the ground 222 yards to 220 thanks to Jarek Broussard's 151 yards on 24 carries, including a 49-yarder that set up a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter. - Colorado/AP College Football

  11/05/21 - Tavion ThomasrJr/2023, Utah, 6-0, 237 (DS#25 RB) + More +

Utah got off to fast start and didn't let up. Tavion Thomas ran for four TDs in the first half, TJ Pledger scored on a school-record 96-yard run and Utah ran past Stanford 52-7 on Friday night. The game was a mismatch from the start as the Utes (6-3, 5-1 Pac-12) scored TDs on their first two drives after coach Kyle Whittingham opted to take the ball first and didn't allow the Cardinal (3-6, 2-5) to get a first down until it was 21-0 in the second quarter. "Coach Whitt has a tremendous amount of confidence in this offense and knows that we like to start fast and like to get going early," quarterback Cameron Rising said. "The O-line did a great job that first drive and really dominated up front." Utah just added on from there, scoring five TDs and one field goal on seven drives in the first half with the only stop coming on a botched snap.

Thomas raced for a 58-yard score on a one-play drive for the of his four TDs, tying the school record he had also matched last week against UCLA. Pledger then outran the Cardinal defense on the first play of another drive for the longest run ever by the Utes. Utah outgained Stanford 440-28 in taking a 38-0 halftime lead for the second highest yardage discrepancy in the first half of an FBS game in the past seven seasons, 24 yards shy of Boise State's edge against Connecticut in 2018. The Cardinal, who were playing without injured starting quarterback Tanner McKee, suffered their most lopsided loss since a 57-7 defeat to Notre Dame in 2003. Stanford has lost four straight games. - Utah/AP College Football

  10/31/21 - Tavion ThomasrJr/2023, Utah, 6-0, 237 (DS#25 RB) + More +

Tavion Thomas rushed for a career-high 160 yards and a school record-tying four touchdowns to power Utah to a 44-24 win Saturday night as the school retired the number 22 in honor of the untimely deaths of Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe. "My O-line was moving that thing. It made it easy for me the way they were working together," Thomas said. Cam Rising threw for 179 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score to run Utah's winning streak against the Bruins to five. "We got a group of dogs and they just don't stop going. They just keep that gas pedal tilted down and just go. It's really fun and I'm happy to be a part of it," Rising said. If his passing and running wasn't enough, Rising even punted twice in quick-kick situations and had them both downed inside the 10-yard line.

But the key was running the ball, according to Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. "They led the league (allowing just 94.9 yards rushing per game going into the game) and we got 297," Whittingham said. "Tavion was outstanding. He's really turned into a workhorse for us." Utah (5-3, 4-1 Pac-12) is alone atop the conference's south division and has beaten the other three contenders – the Bruins, USC and Arizona State, the only other team with fewer than three Pac-12 losses. Freshman Ethan Garbers threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns on 27-for-44 passing with an interception for UCLA (5-4, 3-3). He made his first career start in place of Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who was injured on the Bruins' final possession of last week's loss to Oregon. - Utah/AP College Football

  10/17/21 - Cameron RisingrSr/2025, Utah, 6-2, 220 (DS#28 QB) + More +

Utah is once again emerging as a serious Pac-12 title contender. The Utes are gaining momentum in pursuit of a third division title in four years after taking down a third straight league opponent. Cameron Rising threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns as Utah rallied to beat No. 18 Arizona State 35-21 on Saturday night. Rising added 59 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Tavion Thomas ran for 84 yards and a score. The Utes (4-2, 3-0 Pac-12) took over sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 South, and are the last unbeaten team in Pac-12 play. "We got everything we want right there in front of us," Rising said. "We just got to go take it." Jayden Daniels threw for 237 yards and two TDs to lead Arizona State. Daniels rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown. The Sun Devils (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12) surrendered 28 unanswered points after halftime. Utah scored on four straight drives in the second half to erase a 14-point halftime deficit. Rising completed 13-of-15 pass attempts after halftime while leading the comeback. "Got a lot of faith in Cam Rising," Utes coach Kyle Whittingham said. "He's a great leader for us and the players believe in him." - Utah/AP College Football

  09/26/21 - Aaron LoweJr/2023, Utah, 6-0, 188 (DS#999 CB) + More +

A University of Utah football player has died in in a shooting at a house party early Sunday, Salt Lake City police said. The shooting that killed Aaron Lowe occurred just after midnight, only hours after the Utes beat Washington State 24-13, and less than a year after a teammate of Lowe's died in an accidental shooting. Police said another victim in Sunday's shooting incident - a woman - was hospitalized in critical condition and authorities were searching for a suspect. "We are devastated to hear about the passing of Aaron Lowe," Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Aaron's family and friends, along with the other individual who was harmed in this tragic incident. Aaron was a great teammate, friend, brother and son and was loved by anyone who crossed paths with him. He will be deeply missed." Lowe, 21, was the first recipient of a memorial scholarship created to honor former Utah player Ty Jordan, a 19-year-old tailback who died after an accidental shooting in December 2020. Jordan and Lowe were high school teammates in Mesquite, Texas. After Jordan died, Lowe switched his jersey number from No. 2 to No. 22 to honor his friend. - AP College Football

  09/25/21 - TJ PledgerSr/2022, Utah, 5-08, 192 (DS#46 RB) + More +

TJ Pledger rushed for 117 yards and the go-ahead touchdown as Utah came from behind to beat Washington State 24-13 on Saturday afternoon in the Utes' Pac-12 opener. Pledger, a transfer from Oklahoma who only had 11 yards coming into the game, ran 20 yards for a touchdown with 4:53 to play. "After the game, I was holding my daughter and had tears in my eyes. College football is not easy, you go through ups and downs, and the ones who are able to remain steady and just keep putting their best foot forward every day, they end up being successful," said Pledger, who had all his yards in the second half after starter Micah Bernard left with an upper-body injury. Clark Phillips took an interception 54 yards for a score to clinch it with 2:19 remaining. The Cougars (1-3, 0-2 Pac-12) forced seven fumbles, recovering three, with at least two others saved by replay.

The last one came with 10:18 to play when Daniel Isom hit Chris Curry just before he crossed the goal line and Travion Brown recovered in the end zone. The WSU players were dealing with more than what was happening between the lines. Early Saturday morning near the WSU campus, one person was killed and Brandon Gray, a junior wide receiver, was also shot and is in serious but stable condition. The news shook the travel team who was already in Salt Lake City. - Utah/AP College Football

  08/12/21 - Van FillingerrSr/2025, Utah, 6-4, 255 (DS#49 DE) + More +

As far as fall camp position battles go this month at the University of Utah, the situation at defensive end is reasonably straightforward. All-Pac-12 fifth-year junior Mika Tafua is entrenched at one defensive end spot, but the other projected starter, Maxs Tupai, is not with the team this fall, Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham revealed on Wednesday. Without Tupai, enter a pair of freshmen, Van Fillinger and Xavier Carlton, as prime candidates to fill Tupai's spot. Whittingham has mentioned third-year redshirt freshman Miki Suguturaga a couple of times in these early days as a depth chart option, but that is more for the No. 4 spot right now.

That second defensive end is going to be either Fillinger or Carlton, both of whom find themselves with an opportunity to break through into a significant role this fall. "Huge opportunity," Whittingham said. "Couldn't be a bigger opportunity for those guys, and they're both excited about that opportunity. My guess is they'll answer the bell and do just fine. When something happens to somebody, it's somebody else's opportunity and that's how they have to look at it." Tupai's absence is helping to fuel these opportunities for Carlton and Fillinger, whose lockers are next to each other inside the Eccles Football Center, but in hindsight, staying the course during an unorthodox, COVID-impacted 2020 season, was just as important. - Salt Lake Tribune

  08/08/21 - Devaughn VelerJr/2024, Utah, 6-4, 203 (DS#45 WR) + More +

At one point, as University of Utah wide receiver Britain Covey made his way through Radio Row at Pac-12 media day last week in Los Angeles, the topic turned to redshirt freshman wideout Devaughn Vele. Covey's assessment of the former walk-on was partially rooted in the fact that Vele will perform well in practice, but he has had trouble transferring that into games. With Utah fall camp starting to unfold this week, Vele finds himself in an advantageous position. The Utes have depth questions at wide receiver beyond Covey, Solomon Enis and Jaylen Dixon. Kyle Whittingham gave every indication during spring practice that Vele can step in and grab at least the No. 4 spot, which would get him on the field consistently, but it's up to him to finally break through.

"Going into a game is really hard when you haven't performed at a certain level in a game and you go into a Pac-12 atmosphere, it really is a challenge," Covey said later in the afternoon at Pac-12 media day. "I think there is a mental-toughness side that people don't focus on enough. There's something that you have to carry over, and I feel like I've had that. I had to have that my whole life because I was small, being under-recruited, so I'm trying to help Vele develop that. "When he goes out there, he needs to have no doubt he's an All-Pac-12 receiver. We'll see what happens, but he knows that, which is a good thing. He recognizes that part." - Salt Lake Tribune

If the Pac-12 football media day predictions are any indication, Utah will challenge in the Pac-12 South once again in 2021. The Utes were picked to finish second behind USC in the Pac-12 South in the league's preseason media poll released Wednesday morning. Utah also received six first-place votes and three votes to win the Pac-12 championship. It's Oregon, though, who was the overwhelming favorite not only to win the Pac-12 North but the league title as well. The Ducks received 27 votes to win the Pac-12 championship, followed by 10 for USC and the three for Utah. The Utes also landed a league-high five players on the preseason All-Pac-12 first team. Utah's five first-team selections include junior offensive lineman Nick Ford, junior linebacker Devin Lloyd, junior defensive end Mika Tafua, sophomore kicker Jadon Redding and junior return specialist Britain Covey, who also made the second team as a wide receiver. - Deseret News
