The redshirt-freshman tied for the team with six pass breakups and added 20 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Johnson registered a career-high three pass breakups in a win against rival NM State, while adding three more in UTEP's upset win over Boise State.   2022 CONFERENCE USA ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM: TE: Var'Keyes Gumms, North Texas,...Gumms, who set a record for the most single-season yards by a tight end in program history, was a Second Team selection while Nwaiwu, who started 12 of 13 games for the Mean Green this season, landed on the Third Team. One of the top tight ends in the country, regardless of classification, Gumms finished the season with 33 catches for 451 yards and five touchdowns. His five touchdowns are the second-most by any TE in UNT history and is tied for 13th among all FBS TEs. Among FBS TEs who had at least 50 targets on the year, Gumms' 13.7 yards per reception ranks second in FBS, only behind Georgia's Brock Bowers who was recently named a finalist for the 2022 John Mackey Award given to the best tight end in college football. - North Texas Football

2022 ALL-CONFERENCE USA FIRST TEAM: TE: Var'Keyes Gumms, North Texas,...Gumms burst on to the scene as a part of the Mean Green's potent 1-2 tight end punch along with Jake Roberts, but Gumms quickly became one of the focal points of UNT's high-octane passing attack. Gumms' 451 receiving yards set a new program record for receiving yards by a tight end.   Alabama wide receiver Christian Leary has chosen Central Florida as his new school after entering the NCAA transfer portal earlier this month. Leary, an Orlando native, will return home and play for Gus Malzahn, who led UCF to a 9-4 record and Military Bowl appearance this season. Leary becomes the second Alabama wide receiver to transfer to UCF since the end of the 2021 season. Javon Baker transferred this past summer after two seasons with Alabama, and led the Knights with 747 yards on 54 catches this season.

Leary was one of four Alabama wide receivers who have entered the transfer portal in the past three weeks, joining fellow sophomore JoJo Earle, junior Traeshon Holden and freshman Aaron Anderson. Holden announced his transfer Sunday to Oregon. Appearing in 10 games this season mostly on special teams, Leary caught one pass for six yards. He appeared in eight games as a freshman in 2021, converting to running back midseason when injuries struck that position. - Birmingham News

Western Michigan has hired Louisville offensive coordinator Lance Taylor to lead its football program. Athletic director Dan Bartholomae made the announcement Thursday. The 41-year-old Taylor coached running backs for three seasons each at Notre Dame and Stanford. He was also an assistant at Appalachian State and with the NFL's Carolina Panthers and New York Jets. Alabama coach Nick Saban gave Taylor his start in coaching as a graduate assistant in 2007. Taylor walked on the Crimson Tide's team in 1999 and later earned a scholarship as a receiver and special teams captain for former coach Mike Shula. Taylor, who is from Mount Vernon, Alabama, played professionally in the Arena Football League for the Colorado Crush and Columbus Destroyers. - AP College Football

Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach said throughout this season he hasn't been pleased with the play of his receivers. He compared them to dinosaurs for failing to use their hands and he took away their chairs for not being engaged on the sideline. It was apparent wide receiver would be a position MSU attacked in the transfer portal in hopes of finding a potential No. 1 guy. It'll definitely have to be a priority now. Sophomore receiver Rara Thomas has entered the transfer portal, he announced via social media on Friday.

Thomas is a native of Eufaula, Alabama. He didn't start playing football until his junior year at Eufaula High School, so he was a raw talent coming to Starkville. However, it didn't stop him from having a breakout season as a freshman last year. Thomas collected 18 receptions for 252 yards with five touchdowns in 2021. He had a three-game stretch in SEC play where he caught four touchdown passes. This season, he was inconsistent, but the highs were thrilling. He caught 44 catches for 626 yards with seven touchdowns. Among his highlights: A 75-yard touchdown against Texas A&M and a Randy Moss-like touchdown over a defender at LSU. - The Clarion Ledger

Matthew Sluka accounted for three touchdowns, Peter Oliver ran for 175 yards and scored twice, and No. 8-seed Holy Cross was never threatened in its 35-19 win over New Hampshire in the second round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday. The Crusaders (12-0) never trailed. They advance to play the winner between top-ranked South Dakota State and Delaware. Oliver's 39-yard touchdown run with 7:27 left in the first quarter finished a six-play, 63-yard drive set up after Crusaders safety Walter Reynolds came up with the first of three interceptions of New Hampshire quarterback Max Brosmer. Holy Cross pulled away after a 7-5 halftime lead with two touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters. Oliver ran it in from the 4 four minutes into the second half. Later, Sluka threw a 5-yard score to Jalen Coker with 4:17 left in the third for a 21-5 advantage.

That score was set up when Reynolds got his second interception, picking off Brosmer after the ball bounced off the outstretched hand of running back Dylan Laube. Reynolds intercepted the ball at the Crusaders' 30-yard line and didn't stop running until being pushed out of bounds at the Wildcats' 19-yard line. New Hampshire responded with an eight-play, 75-yard drive that lasted a mere 2:10 and ended when Brosmer threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Kyle Lepkowski. That play reduced the deficit to 21-11 just before the end of the third but Holy Cross closed the door when Sluka ran it in from the 3 to end a 10-play, 75-yard drive that lasted more than six minutes. Sluka ran for a pair of scores and carried it 12 times for 103 yards. Oliver amassed his 175 yards on 30 carries. Brosmer threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns to go along with the three interceptions. Holy Cross earned a first-round bye and was hosting a second-round game for the first time in program history. - Holy Cross/AP College Football

Appalachian State redshirt sophomore receiver Christian Wells will enter the transfer portal to leave the school. Wells ends his four year career at App State 654 yards on 37 receptions. "This has been nothing short of an amazing journey," Wells wrote. "This has been a great four years but I will be entering the transfer portal with two more years of eligibility left in my college career. "Wells had nine receptions for 170 yards and three touchdowns this season. - High County Press

Another Miami Hurricane is headed into the transfer portal and this time it's a player who once seemed to be on a star trajectory. After falling out of favor and seeing a shrunken role as a sophomore, Avantae Williams is transferring from Miami, he announced on Twitter. Williams had a tumultous career with the Hurricanes - including a health issue, a domestic-violence accusation and, ultimately, an impressive freshman season in 2021 - and is now planning to head elsewhere to wrap up his college career. The safety will have three years of eligibility left after a medical issue kept him off the field for the entire 2020 season.

Williams is the seventh Miami to announce his intentions to transfer this month and the fourth defensive back. The others so far are running back Thaddius Franklin Jr., defensive lineman Allan Haye and Elijah Roberts, and defensive backs Gilbert Frierson, Jalen Harrell and Keshawn Washington. Williams is also maybe the Hurricanes' highest profile entrant so far. The 6-foot, 198-pound defensive back was Miami's top-ranked addition in the Class of 2020, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. - Miami Herald
