  12/12/20 - Tyler Johnston IIIrSr/2023, Towson, 6-1, 205 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Tyler Johnston III passed for 217 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns, and UAB beat Rice 21-16 on Saturday to claim the Conference USA West Division for the third consecutive season. UAB (5-3) will face Marshall for the conference championship. The Thundering Herd had their game canceled this week against Charlotte. UAB scored on its first two possessions of the second half - in just seven plays.

Myron Mitchell got behind the defense on UAB's first play after halftime for a 63-yard score. Samario Rudolph caught another long pass in traffic along the left side and he dove into the end zone for a 21-13 lead. UAB punted it to the Rice 24 with 49 seconds left in the game - with no timeouts for the Owls. Rice got it past midfield, but Grayson Cash intercepted a pass on fourth-and-18 to seal it. JoVoni Johnson passed for 161 yards and a touchdown for Rice (2-3). Jordan Myers made nine catches for 62 yards and a score. Myers' score with 38 seconds left before halftime gave Rice a 13-6 lead. Collin Riccitelli had field goals of 36 and 40 yards, and he added a 40-yarder in the fourth quarter. - Alabama-Birmingham/AP College Football

Tyrrell Pigrome had 218 yards passing with a touchdown and 60 yards rushing, Brayden Narveson made two field goals over 45 yards and the Hilltoppers beat Charlotte 37-19 in a rare Sunday contest. Western Kentucky scored the first 17 points of the game in some unconventional ways. Special teams player A.J. Brathwaite Jr. recovered a botched punt attempt in the end zone and offensive lineman Jordan Meredith gathered a loose ball in the end zone after a fumble by teammate Gaej Walker. Narveson connected on field goals from 33, 46 and 49 yards - boosting his season total to 13-of-14 makes. Walker added 98 yards on the ground for Western Kentucky (5-6, 4-3 Conference USA). Pigrome was 18-of-27 passing and he carried it eight times. Chris Reynolds passed for 205 yards with two touchdowns for Charlotte (2-4, 2-2). Two of Micaleous Elder's four catches were for touchdowns. The game was initially scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 28 and bumped to Tuesday, Dec. 1 but was unable to be played. It was WKU's second Sunday game in program history - with the first against Arkansas State in the 1952 Refrigerator Bowl. - AP College Football

  11/21/20 - Tyrrell PigromerSr/2023, Towson, 5-09, 204 (DS#68 QB) + More +

Tyrrell Pigrome ran for two touchdowns and the defense scored two more on back-to-back takeaways as Western Kentucky scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half to defeat Florida International 38-21 on Saturday. FIU (0-5, 0-3 Conference USA) was first on the board when JJ Holloman pulled in a 28-yard pass from Max Bortenschlager midway through the opening quarter, and the Panthers led 13-10 at halftime.

The Hilltoppers (4-6, 3-3) rallied for 35 unanswered points beginning in the first half. But defense turned the tide in the third quarter when Bortenschlager was hit and fumbled. Roger Cray picked up the ball on the bounce and ran it 19 yards to the end zone to put Western Kentucky ahead 17-13. On FIU's next play, Eli Brown picked off Bortgenschlager for a 22-yard interception return and touchdown. Gaej Walker and Pigrome scored short rushing touchdowns in the final quarter as WKU extended its scoring run. Walker finished with 127 yards on 17 carries. Pigrome passed for 121 yards. Western Kentucky hasn't lost a home finale since 2010. The Hilltoppers end their season at Charlotte next Saturday. - AP College Football

Backup quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Craig Burt Jr. with 1:21 to play and Western Kentucky beat FCS-member Chattanooga 13-10 on Saturday. Brayden Narveson kicked a pair of 32-yard field goals for Western Kentucky (2-4). Pigrome came on for starter Kevaris Thomas late in the fourth quarter and finished 4-of-8 passing for 73 yards. Thomas completed 12 of 17 for 59 yards. He lost a fumble that was recovered by UTC's Ty Boeck at the Mocs' 20 with 23 seconds left in the first half and Western Kentucky trailing 7-3. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5, moved to Thursday, Sept. 3, then eventually delayed until Oct. 24 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Chattanooga played for the first time in 336 days, its longest layoff from action since missing the 1943 and 1944 seasons due to World War II. This is the lone game of the fall for the Mocs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. UTC will compete for the Southern Conference Championship with an eight-game schedule in the spring of 2021. - Western Kentucky/AP College Football

  10/23/20 - Elorm LumorrSr/2022, Towson, 6-4, 242 (DS#107 OLB) + More +

Elorm Lumor is ready. The world learned Lumor had his eligibility reinstated by the NCAA last week, but there was never an official word on where he was physically in the process. That came Monday. Lumor being named one of the starting defensive ends was not a surprise, but it does suggest he will be ready to play in Week 1. It was not clear when his surprise return was announced when exactly he returned the program as an active participant. Now the Scarlet Knights need to keep their best pass rusher healthy. - Star Ledger

The Towson University athletics department will not be playing an intercollegiate football schedule during the 2021 spring season. Towson football will now prepare for the traditional 2021 fall season. This decision was made in conjunction with Towson University student-athletes, coaches, department of athletics administrators and medical personnel. The football team will prepare to hold traditional spring practices to lower the risks of long-term injuries and get ready for the 2021 season. All precautions will be taken, including COVID screening for players, coaches and staff. With today's announcement, Towson has opted out of the spring 2021 football schedule in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Towson football student-athletes will retain their year of eligibility per the NCAA. Abilene Christian, Campbell, Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, Houston Baptist, Old Dominion, Sacramento State and Stephen F. Austin have all opted out of a potential spring football season in 2021. - Towson Football

  10/16/20 - Elorm LumorrSr/2022, Towson, 6-4, 242 (DS#107 OLB) + More +

Greg Schiano is not the only guy coming back to Rutgers under unexpected circumstances this fall. Elorm Lumor, who was the Scarlet Knights' best pass rusher the last two seasons before declaring for the NFL draft, has returned to the program. He was a surprise inclusion when Rutgers released its updated team roster on Monday with less than two weeks until its season opener at Michigan State on Oct. 24. Lumor signed with an agent after entering the draft pool in January and did his pre-draft training at TEST Football Academy in Martinsville. But he appears to have been granted an NCAA waiver reinstating his eligibility after going undrafted and unsigned.

There is precedent for Lumor's situation, but not much. The NCAA restored Arizona State punter Michael Turk's eligibility in June after he also signed with an agent and went undrafted and unsigned. And Turk participated in the NFL Scouting Combine, while Lumor did not get an invitation and then had his pro day canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Lumor had one year of eligibility remaining when he left Rutgers in January. The Piscataway native tied for the team lead in sacks in each of the last two seasons, notching three sacks in 2019 and four in 2018. Lumor also led the Scarlet Knights in tackles-for-loss in 2018 with seven. - Star Ledger

  10/11/20 - John DunmorerSr/2026, Towson, 6-2, 185 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Penn State's wide receiver room shrunk by one player Wednesday afternoon. Lions247's Sean Fitz first reported that redshirt freshman wide receiver John Dunmore had withdrawn from Penn State and has been training at home in South Florida for weeks. Fitz's report also stated Dunmore had not entered the NCAA's transfer portal as of Wednesday afternoon. The university confirmed the redshirt freshman was no longer at the school. "John Dunmore has withdrawn from Penn State this semester for personal reasons," a statement from a Penn State spokesperson read. The redshirt freshman came to Penn State in its 2019 recruiting class as a four-star wide receiver and was competing for playing time at the position with nine other wideouts this season. He only appeared in one game last year and did not record any receptions. - Centre Times

  10/05/20 - Tyrrell PigromerSr/2023, Towson, 5-09, 204 (DS#68 QB) + More +

OCT 5 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WKU graduate QB Tyrrell Pigrome, a graduate transfer from Maryland, continued his efficient play at the quarterback position in the Hilltoppers' 20-17 win at longtime rival Middle Tennessee. The Birmingham, Alabama, native completed 21-of-36 attempts for 188 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 55 rushing yards. Pigrome's 21 completions tied a collegiate career-high, while he did not turn the ball over for the third-straight game in a WKU uniform. He is now one of just three quarterbacks in the nation to have at least six passing touchdowns and no interceptions this season, along with Clemson's Trevor Lawrence and Miami's D'Eriq King. - Conference USA Football

Tyrrell Pigrome threw for two touchdowns and Western Kentucky held on for a 20-17 victory over Middle Tennessee on Saturday for the Hilltoppers' first victory. Pigrome threw an 11-yard pass to Joshua Simon in the left corner of the end zone for a 10-point lead with six minutes left in the game. Asher O'Hara threw a 2-yard TD pass to CJ Windham with just over two minutes remaining but an onside kick failed. O'Hara finished 23-of-33 passing for 217 yards and added 98 rushing yards on 25 carries, including a touchdown, for the Blue Raiders (0-4, 0-2 Conference USA). Pigrome was 21-of-36 passing for 188 yards and led the Hilltoppers (1-2, 1-0) in rushing with 55 yards. He threw a 6-yard score to Xavier Lane with 21 seconds left in the first half for a 10-10 tie.   09/16/20 - Tyler Johnston IIIrSr/2023, Towson, 6-1, 205 (DS#999 QB) + More +

The Blazers (1-1) have used two quarterbacks extensively through the first two games of the season and are now down to one after starting quarterback Tyler Johnston suffered an injury to his non-throwing shoulder while being ruled out for the foreseeable future. "Tyler Johnston III has suffered an injury to his non-throwing shoulder and is out indefinitely," Clark said in a prepared statement. "Tyler is one of the best competitors I have ever coached and I know he will take his rehab very seriously to give himself a chance to play again this season. Our entire UAB family stands behind Tyler and we wish him the best during his recovery."

Johnston, a Spanish Fort native that led the Toros to a 35-0 record and two AHSAA state titles, has been the starter for UAB since an injury to A.J. Erdely forced the former to assume the signal-caller duties late in the 2018 season. The redshirt junior missed four games last year with an MCL sprain on his left knee but has started 16 games in a career that includes 3,879 passing yards with 31 touchdowns and 25 interceptions and 618 rushing yards and five touchdowns. - Birmingham Post Herald

  09/05/20 - Tyrrell PigromerSr/2023, Towson, 5-09, 204 (DS#68 QB) + More +

Western Kentucky has announced its starting quarterback. After watching two weeks of practice and reviewing film from Saturday's first fall scrimmage, Tyrrell "Piggy T" Pigrome was named the Hilltoppers' starting quarterback leading into the Sept. 12 season opener at Louisville. "I think he's done a really good job of handling the offense. You've heard me say and (offensive coordinator Bryan) Ellis say a lot that part of playing the position is just managing the position, mastering the play, making sure everybody is in the right position," WKU head coach Tyson Helton said Wednesday in a Zoom conference. "You can tell he's an older guy - he does that. He seems to handle it pretty well. At the same time, he's still learning the offense. He'll have to progress as we go through the season, but he's doing a nice job of that."

Pigrome was the assumed frontrunner for the position because of his experience entering fall camp as a graduate transfer from Maryland. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound QB earned seven starts over his career for the Terrapins. Pigrome, the 2015 Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year, accumulated 2,407 total yards of offense in 34 games, and was recruited by now-WKU offensive coordinator Bryan Ellis out of Clay-Chalkville High School. Pigrome credited aggressive recruiting once he entered the transfer portal in February as a big reason he came to Bowling Green. "I think the maturity level's there, I think he's handled things - being the new guy, coming in, have to win the position - I felt like he's handled that pretty good with maturity, so we just felt like, right now, he's kind of the clear-cut starter," Helton said. "As you know, as we progress through the season, you never know what's going to happen, so we'll see. I'm just happy for him. I think he's done a nice job and looking forward to seeing him play in Louisville." - BG Daily News
